VU men's hoops team gets verbal commitment
DAVID ROBB
Wednesday, October 08, 2008

The Valparaiso University men's basketball team has picked up another in-state recruit – by way of Southern Illinois and Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill. – for next year's class.

Kokomo native Brandon Wood, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman shooting guard at Highland, verbally committed to the Crusaders on Tuesday night.

"What makes him tough is he can shoot it but he can also put the ball on the floor," said Ronnie Dean, Wood's coach at Highland. "He's the type of guard that can be all-conference in the Horizon League by his junior or senior year."

Wood averaged 3.7 points – including a 15-point performance against Northern Illinois – in six games with the Salukis last season before a stress fracture in his foot forced him to take a medical redshirt. He transferred to Highland in the offseason.

Wood, who also had offers from Detroit, UW-Milwaukee and American University, joins a 2009 recruiting class that already includes Mooresville guard Matt Kenney, Penn guard Tommy Kurth and Henry Sibley (Minn.) forward Chris Halvorsen.

"He'll be one of my better players," Dean said. "I'd be very disappointed if he didn't average about 15 points a game."

Valpo lands Australian swingman Broekhoff
By Mark Lazerus
October 23, 2008

Valparaiso has gone Down Under once again to find a frontcourt player of the future. The Crusaders received a verbal commitment from Australian 6-6 swingman Ryan Broekhoff. He'll join the Crusaders next fall. VU picked up forward Cameron Witt from Tasmania this past offseason.

From the way one of his assistant coaches at the Australian Institute of Sport, Paul Goriss, described him, Broekhoff sounds an awful lot like the departed Samuel Haanpaa.

"His strength is the catch-and-shoot 3, he's just shoots the ball extremely well," Goriss said. "He was the MVP of the under-20 national championship in February of this year."

Goriss said Broekhoff is a little raw and needs to put on some weight, something he's already been working on. But he sees big things in about two or three years from Broekhoff, once he "fills in a bit."

Raiders land 'sleeper of the century' guard
By Marc Katz
Saturday, October 25, 2008

FAIRBORN — Darian Cartharn, a 6-foot guard from Canal Winchester, visited a Wright State practice Friday, Oct. 24, confirming a verbal commitment to the Raiders' basketball team.

"I like the coaches and the facilities," said Cartharn, who played two tournament games at the Nutter Center, but lost them both. "I'm 0-2 in the Nutter Center, so I want to change that."

Cartharn is the second commitment to the Raiders for the 2009-10 season. Tyler Koch, a 6-4 guard from Winchester, Ind., is the other, leaving WSU with a scholarship to give.

WSU coach Brad Brownell said he was happy to land Cartharn, and joked, "We've got Tyler Koch of Winchester, Ind., and now Darian. We've got someone from Winchester coming from two states."

Cartharn averaged about 12 points last season for Canal Winchester while playing with B.J. Mullins, a freshman at Ohio State this year.

"I think we'll be better this year, more versatile," Cartharn said. "Last year, we threw the ball to B.J. a lot."

InsidePrepSports.net calls Cartharn "our sleeper of the century, aka Mummy-Man for the 2009 class."
