AAU Preview: Wisconsin Swing 16U-Selk 4/8/2008 Wisconsin Sports Network By Mark Miller
Josh Gasser, 6-4, PG, Port Washington Another extremely talented player in Wisconsin’s deep and promising class of 2010 … A two-year varsity starter for Port Washington … Averaged 21.8 points per game and earned first-team all-North Shore Conference honors as Port Washington finished 12-9 … Scored 43 points in a loss to Milwaukee Lutheran last season … Unselfish, long and skilled point guard who finds open teammates and can knock down perimeter jump shots … Currently ranked No. 8 among state prospects in the class of 2010 by Wishoops.net … Received a scholarship offer from UW-Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter last fall and has interest from Bradley, George Mason, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, UW-Green Bay and Wright State, among others … From coach Selk, “Josh always dictates the tempo of the game and is a true point guard, even though he is 6-4. He is very long and can guard players who may be quicker or more athletic because of that. Where I believe he really sets himself apart is his intelligence and efficiency. He scores by shooting a high percentage and in few shot attempts. He rebounds extremely well for a guard and has great hands in traffic. He is also our player most willing to take charges and dive on the floor for loose balls. If Josh commits to the weight room and gets stronger, I really believe he can be a high-major Division I basketball player.”

Saint Louis University extends scholarship offers to Kelm, Gasser 8/15/2008 - Wisconsin Sports Network By Mark Miller
Saint Louis University coach and state native Rick Majerus dipped into Wisconsin last summer to successfully recruit point guard Kwamain Mitchell of Whitefish Bay Dominican.
Majerus, the former head coach at Marquette, Ball State and Utah, once again is testing the waters in Wisconsin as he recently offered scholarships to Randolph junior Kyle Kelm and Port Washington junior Josh Gasser.
The 6-9 Kelm and 6-4 Gasser have excelled on the basketball court for their respective high school teams and as teammates on the Wisconsin Swing 16U travel team over the past few seasons.
Kelm is an extremely skilled forward who can knock down shots from beyond the three-point arc, while Gasser is a long, athletic point guard who makes his teammates better with pinpoint passes off of drives to the basket.
Kelm is currently ranked No. 3 among state prospects in the class of 2010 by Wishoops.net, while Gasser checks in at No. 8.
Kelm had previously received scholarship offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Oregon State, UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee, among others.
Gasser had received scholarship offers from a multiple NCAA Division I schools, including North Dakota State, Green Bay and Milwaukee.
Saint Louis is a member of the Atlantic Ten Conference and will compete in a brand new state-of-the-art arena beginning in 2008-09.

Several members of the highly successful Wisconsin Swing 16U travel-team program have recently received recruiting interest from schools at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Following is a brief breakdown of the recent interest for each player, according to Swing coach Tyler Selk: Josh Gasser, 6-4, PG, Jr., Port Washington – Creighton, Northeastern, Northwestern and Portland have expressed recent interest while William & Mary offered a scholarship. Like Rank, Gasser is a prime recruiting target for both Green Bay and Milwaukee, who previously offered scholarships.

12/1/2008 News and notes from the City/Suburban Holiday Classic and the NY2LA Sports Classic held in the Milwaukee area last weekend: Josh Gasser continues to shine for Port Washington Of the nine games I watched over the weekend, the most impressive individual performance was without question turned in by Port Washington junior Josh Gasser. The 6-foot-4 point guard scorched a solid Catholic Memorial squad for 41 points in a 64-59 come-from-behind victory. He may be the best in the state at getting to the foul line as he continually beat his defender off the dribble to either score or make a trip to the free-throw line, where he converted on 18 of 20 attempts. “Getting to the line is his game,” Port Washington coach John Bunyan said. “He does a good job of finding an opening and going to the basket.” In addition to scoring off the dribble, Gasser hit what may have been the biggest perimeter shot of the game when he nailed a three-pointer late in the fourth period to give the Pirates a lead they would never relinquish. “He had no problem stepping up and shooting that three,” Bunyan said. Northwestern is the latest school to show strong interest in Gasser, who has received scholarship offers from several NCAA Division I schools, including Northern Iowa, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay and William & Mary.

Updated 2010 Player Rankings: Big Ten schools showing interest in Gasser posted by Mark Miller 1/7/2009 With Madison Memorial’s Vander Blue and Eau Claire North’s Evan Anderson already deciding to play for coach Bo Ryan at Wisconsin, which state player has emerged as the hottest prospect still on the board from the class of 2010? Without a doubt it’s Port Washington’s Josh Gasser. The tremendously consistent and productive 6-foot-4 point guard has always been considered among the top 10-12 players in Wisconsin from his class, but his stock has absolutely skyrocketed since the start of the 2008-09 high school basketball season. And with good reason. Gasser currently leads the state in scoring at a whopping 29.0 points per game. He has scored 174 points in six games for 5-1 Port Washington, which sustained its first loss of the season Tuesday at the hands of Germantown despite a 29-point outing from Gasser. In addition, Gasser is averaging just a shade over 10 rebounds per contest. He also is more than willing to give up the ball to his teammates and is near impossible to keep out of the lane or away from the foul line because of his ability to get around defenders on drives to the basket. After receiving offers from quality programs from Loyola (Chicago), Northern Iowa, Saint Louis, UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee, among others, last summer, Gasser now is beginning to attract interest from several high-major programs. Assistant coaches from both Iowa and Iowa State attended Port Washington’s non-league game with Brown Deer last week, and Gasser and his family took an unofficial visit to the Iowa campus last weekend. An assistant coach from Northwestern attended the game Tuesday against Germantown and Port Washington coach John Bunyan said the Gasser family will take an unofficial visit to the Northwestern campus in the near future. Indiana is also beginning to show interest in Gasser, who moved up from No. 7 to No. 3 in the updated Wishoops.net Player Rankings for the class of 2010 released today. “We’ve played six games and Josh hasn’t had an off night yet,” Bunyan said. “He scored 29 points against a big, physical team from Germantown last night and yet he still distributes the ball and doesn’t force things.” Cedarburg coach Lance Randall, who spent last season as an assistant coach at Loyola after leading Oshkosh West to two WIAA Division 1 state championships, believes Gasser is a Big Ten-level recruit. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see Josh get some offers at that level,” Randall said. “He does amazing things on the court. Josh may be the most complete player I’ve seen come out of Wisconsin in several years. He plays with intensity and toughness.” Both Bunyan and Randall said Gasser’s perimeter jump shot has improved this season, though he remains most comfortable taking the ball to the basket. “Josh makes big, clutch shots and gets to the foul line,” Bunyan said. “He just brings everybody else up with his level of play and with his leadership.” Added Randall, “The other thing about Josh is he defends and he rebounds. He’s does just about everything well.” Gasser is one of 20 players from the class of 2010 who moved up in the updated Wishoops.net Player Rankings. The biggest news in the 2010 rankings may be the accent to No. 1 by Blue, who switched places with Anderson. Blue’s combination of athleticism, skill and passion for the game is a big reason why Madison Memorial remains unbeaten and atop the Wishoops.net Division 1 state rankings.
Players making the biggest jumps besides Gasser include Northwestern’s Steve Tecker (from 18 to 11), Fall Creek’s Jordan Reetz (from 23 to 14), Nicolet’s Myles Henry (from 19 to 15), Cuba City’s Evan Richard (from 31 to 23), Waupun’s Austin Armga (from 37 to 25), Beloit’s K.J. Evans (from 42 to 29), Milwaukee South Division’s Melvin Cook (from 50 to 35), Milwaukee Washington’s Terry Taylor (from 46 to 37) and Portage’s Kevin Hurd (from 45 to 41).

Class of 2010 Intro: Josh Gasser By Nate Latsch BillikenReport.com Posted Jan 12, 2009
Port Washington (Wis.) point guard Josh Gasser received his first scholarship offer, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, during the summer after his freshman year. The high-scoring junior now has several offers and has seen an increase in his recruiting this season.
“It’s picked up a lot lately,” Gasser said Sunday night. “A lot of bigger schools are interested. More Big Ten schools are interested.” A 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior point guard, Gasser has scholarship offers from a variety of schools: North Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Saint Louis, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and others.
Gasser is currently in wait-and-see mode with his recruiting as more and more schools show interest.
He has drawn attention recently from schools like Iowa, Northwestern, Iowa State, Indiana and Illinois.
They have been checking out the Port Washington junior and Gasser has been checking them out as well. He will make an unofficial visit to Northwestern this weekend.
“I’m visiting a bunch of those schools or I have visited,” he said.
But no one from that group of schools has extended a scholarship offer at this time.
“I think Northwestern and Iowa could (offer),” Gasser said. “I’m not positive yet. They seem very interested in me, but we’ll see.”
Gasser has plenty of time. He’s off to an impressive start with his high school team and has all summer traveling with the Wisconsin Swing to try to make a favorable impression on those coaches.
The Port Washington Pirates are off to a 5-2 start going into Tuesday’s game against visiting Slinger.
Gasser is averaging 27.3 points per game, has made 63 of 79 free throws (79.7 percent) and has knocked down 12 3-pointers. He opened the season with a 41-point performance, including 18 free throws, against Catholic Memorial.
Gasser averaged 10 points per game as a freshman, which ranked third on the Pirates, and a team-high 21.7 points per game as a sophomore. He made 31 3-pointers as a sophomore and made 84.5 percent of his free throw attempts (137 of 162).
The junior point guard is 82 points away from hitting 1,000 for his career, but when asked to describe his game, Gasser doesn’t point to his scoring ability.
“I don’t see myself as a scorer,” he said. “I think the best thing about me is I pretty much can do a little bit of everything. … I think everything is just solid. It helps me out a lot.”
Gasser sites his toughness and decision-making as two of his best attributes, which go well together with his good size (6-4) to play the point guard position.
But the Port Washington junior is smart enough to know he has to get better to play in college and is working on trying to improve his athleticism. He knows he’ll have to defend smaller and quicker guards in college.
As Gasser works to improve his game in preparation of playing at the next level, he’ll continue on with the recruiting process of having coaches watch and evaluate him and making unofficial visits to schools so he can do his homework on them.
“I’m just going to weigh my options,” Gasser said. “I’d love to play in the Big Ten and stay close to home. That’s a conference that fits my style. If that doesn’t work out, we’ll see what happens.”

Port Washington's Gasser receives offer from Big Ten school 2/19/2009 By Mark Miller Wishoops.net Editor After receiving scholarship offers from several mid-major college basketball programs over the past year, Port Washington junior Josh Gasser now has earned his first offer from a school in a high-major conference. Gasser leads Port Washington to title of Middleton Tournament posted by Mark Miller at 6/29/2009 Fresh off an unofficial visit to Creighton University, Port Washington senior Josh Gasser proved why he is a highly coveted prospect among NCAA Division I schools Sunday at the second annual Cardinal Classic Summer Tournament at Middleton High School. Scoring off the dribble virtually at will, Gasser led Port Washington to the Gold Division championship with a relatively easy 50-36 victory over the host Cardinals in the title game. Gasser finished the first half with 18 points as the Pirates sprinted to a 32-15 lead and were never seriously threatened in the second half. Gasser used his quick first step and physical strength to consistently get around defenders on aggressive drives to the basket. Once near the hoop, he finished exceptionally well and also got the foul line, where he made six-of-seven attempts. Throughout victories over Beloit Memorial, Neenah and Middleton on Sunday, the 6-foot-3 Gasser scored at a consistently high level around the basket, either off of drives or post-ups. He struggled a bit with his perimeter jump shot, especially from beyond the arc, but that was about the only shortcoming in his game as he rebounded exceptionally well and also found open teammates with pinpoint passing. Currently ranked No. 3 among state prospects in the class of 2010 by Wishoops.net, Gasser has added 10-15 pounds to his frame since the end of the 2008-09 season and now weighs close to 190 pounds. In addition to scholarship offers from Northern Iowa, Northwestern, UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee, among others, Gasser is receiving interest from Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington State. He will play in July with the Wisconsin Swing-Selk 17U squad that is scheduled to take part in grassroots tournaments in Cincinnati, Louisville, Milwaukee and Las Vegas. Besides the stellar play of Gasser, Port Washington received strong contributions from a number of others on Sunday as coach John Buynan’s squad has the look of a team capable of competing for the North Shore Conference title and a trip to the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament.

Arizona State, Maryland extend scholarship offers to Gasser 7/29/2009 By Mark Miller
After playing exceptionally well in grassroots tournaments in Indianapolis and Louisville earlier this month, Port Washington senior Josh Gasser began to receive serious recruiting interest from a number of high-major NCAA Division I schools.
Earlier this week, Gasser was rewarded for his impressive performances with a pair of scholarship offers from schools in the Atlantic Coast and Pac Ten conferences.
Maryland and Arizona State extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-4 combination guard Monday evening, and Port Washington coach John Bunyan believes an offer from Virginia and new coach Tony Bennett might be forthcoming as well.

Wisconsin extends full scholarship offer to Port Washington's Gasser By Mark Miller 9/16/2009
The University of Wisconsin men's basketball program extended a full scholarship offer to Port Washington senior Josh Gasser today.
Gasser canceled a planned visit to Arizona State University this weekend and instead plans to take an unofficial visit to Wisconsin this weekend.
"Growing up in Wisconsin and getting an offer from UW ... that is always what you want," Gasser said Wednesday evening. "It's a good option for me right now.
"My final four right now are Creighton, Northwestern, Northern Iowa and Wisconsin. Wisconsin has a lot of strengths as well as the other three. All of the schools are very high on my list. I have no exact timetable, but I'd like to make my decision some time fairly soon. I'm just not exactly sure when."
