BOYS HOOPS: Turson Div. IV Player of the Year in Northwest District By MARK HAZELWOOD | March 13, 2009
Before his junior season even finishes, the accolades that continue to come Plymouth guard Brook Turson's way may warrant an entire section of a trophy case.
Turson, who leads the Big Red (21-1) into tonight's Division IV district title game against fellow Firelands Conference foe St. Paul (15-8) at Willard, was named the Associated Press Northwest District Player of the Year on Wednesday.
"I am very proud of Brook and our team for all that they have accomplished this season," said Plymouth head coach Brad Turson, who is Brook's father. "This is an outstanding honor for Brook for all the hard work and dedication that he has given to the game."
A repeat selection to the first team, Turson shares Player of the Year honors with two other players that continues to indicate the type of college career that may be ahead of the youngest of three sons who are all in the 1,000-point club at Plymouth.
Ethan Michael of Toledo Christian and Brad Piehl of New Knoxville share the award with Turson. Michael is headed to the Air Force Academy on a basketball scholarship while Piehl is headed to Robert Morris, where he will be teammates with Willard graduate Jimmy Langhurst next season.
Brook has the most interest currently from Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Wright State, Western Carolina and Tulsa.
"The maturity he has shown this season and the leadership he has provided to our team have been major factors in our success," Brad said. "This is also an award that would not be possible without the contributions of our entire team throughout the season."

I love this kid and was hoping WSU would go after him. He is a Tyler Koch, Vaughn Duggins, JD Gardner type of player that can play PG/SG/SF. He is a very good all around player that plays at a lower level of basketball in Ohio otherwise he would be much better known. He is a son of a coach, so you know the kid is smart too.

BOYS HOOPS - Plymouth prevails over St. Paul BY DON HOHLER Saturday March 14 2009
WILLARD - The difference was 22 in the first meeting. It was a two-point game the second time around.
Friday night, in the third meeting between Plymouth (23-1) and St. Paul (15-9) the first and second place teams in the Firelands Conference Plymouth again prevailed in this DIV IV District title game, this time by four points, 47-43.
Plymouth used the win at sold-out Willard High School to advance for the third straight year to the Sweet 16 at Bowling Green's Anderson Arena. On Tuesday night they will play Kalida (21-3) in the second game. Kalida advanced Friday after stopping Pandora-Gilboa, 44-37.
The gamble of keeping All-Ohio junior Brook Turson on the floor for the final six minutes with four fouls was unquestionably the key to the Plymouth victory. He picked up No.'s 3 and 4 in a six-second span but his father, coach Brad Turson, made the decision to keep him in the game.
St. Paul held a one-point lead when Brook Turson was tagged with his fourth foul.
"I felt I had to keep him out there," Brad Turson stated after the game. "Although I was confident the others could get it done, I believed Brook could stay out of trouble and still contribute enough to get us the win."
St. Paul was quick to jump on Brook Turson's misfortune as senior guard Jared Missler snapped the nets for his third trey of the game 12 seconds after Turson's fourth miscue. It boosted St. Paul's lead to 39-35.
The tide was quick to turn after that, however, as St. Paul's tower of strength inside, 6-6 Steve Mutchler, was saddled with his third and fourth fouls over a 10-second span. Now it was advantage Turson as he went quickly to the rack, cutting the lead to two.
Mutchler's retaliated with two free throws, but Brandon McCalley's steal and coast-to-coast run and goal canceled them.
Then came the shot that probably only Turson would have tried, a long, near NBA length, three-ball high off the right elbow that swished the net. The shot regained the lead for Plymouth with 2:15 left.
The Flyers then failed to get off a shot on the next two possessions, turning the ball over twice. After the second turnover, Plymouth went into a full-blown stall, doing its best to keep the ball in Turson's hands. Daniel Tracht was forced to foul him with 52 seconds left and the Plymouth junior dropped in both to make it a 44-41 game with 52 seconds left.
The Flyers got two decent looks on their next possession, one from inside and another from above the arc. Both were long.
Turson retrieved the second miss and was quickly fouled with 17 seconds remaining. He converted one of two to make it a two possession game.
Mutchler dropped in a eight-foot hook shot with seven seconds left to get it back to 45-43, but after a St. Paul timeout, Plymouth's Cody Smith crossed up the Flyer defense on the out-of-bounds play. He threw a three-quarter court pass to Brandon Burton, who got a half-step on his defender and scored with two seconds left.
St. Paul's ability to keep track of Turson after the first two minutes of the game had much to do with their holding the lead for much of the first three quarters. Turson scored on back-to-back three-point plays in the first 2 minutes, but wouldn't score again in the first half until 1:15 was left.
"Our defense was unbelievable," Flyer coach Mike Smith said after the game. "Our goal was to keep Brook (Turson) out of the lanes and until that last quarter, we were successful. Our kids were really locked in defensively. But, Plymouth was equally strong on the other end."
St. Paul led by a point at the end of the first quarter and was up 23-21 at the intermission. Missler's second shot was from deep in the right corner that barely beat the halftime buzzer.
Mutchler and Turson did the bulk of the scoring in a third period, one that saw the defenses far out-shine the offenses. Just 23 total points were scored, with the Flyers still hanging onto the lead going into the fourth, 34-33.
Eric Schwieterman and Smith exchanged goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Mutchler scored four points and retrieved three misses while Turson scored eight points and had one rebound.
Turson finished with 22 points while McCalley had 10. The team shooting numbers were 19 of 47 from the field including a minuscule two of 11 from above the arc. Missing half of its 14 shots from the line also helped to keep it close.
Mutchler led St. Paul with 16 while Missler had nine, connecting on all three St. Paul shots above the arc. It tried 12 and 43 shots total. From the free throw line, it was eight of 12.
The rebound total was a wash, at 27 apiece. Turson had nine for Plymouth while Mutchler had eight and Schwieterman seven for St. Paul.
St. Paul had four turnovers in the final quarter was half of what it had for the game. Plymouth took even better control of the ball, turning it over just six times.
"It was as physical as it could get. But, the game was well officiated and there was no cheap stuff as both teams kept their emotions in check," Smith said.
It was the final game for four St. Paul seniors Matcher, Measlier, Adam Pug and Brad Weisenberger, the latter forced to set out the tournament games with a badly sprained ankle.

State-ranked Plymouth is up next for Wildcats By BRUCE HEFFLINGER 3/16/09
It's been two decades since Kalida participated in the boys state basketball tournament. The Wildcats are now just two wins away from doing it again.
But the task at hand won't be easy for Dick Kortokrax crew, which takes on state-ranked Plymouth (23-1) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Bowliing Green's Anderson Arena in the Division IV regional semifinals.
The Big Red Vikings rallied from a four-point deficit in the final four minutes to beat Norwalk St. Paul 47-43 for their third district title in four years. Plymouth lost to Van Buren 68-52 in the regional semifinals a year ago.
"(Experience) should help a little bit," Plymouth senior Cody Smith said in an article in the Mansfield News Journal. "We're ready to go back and we want to do what no other (Plymouth) team has done before."
To do that the Vikings must beat a 20-4 Kalida team that is on a roll, winning 15 straight contests including a 44-37 victory over Putnam County League rival Pandora-Gilboa on Friday night.
"It's not going to be easy," Plymouth coach Brad Turson said. "They're going to get out and get after us. We love tough games, so let's go play and see what happens."
Kortokrax, now in his 34th season at Kalida, has an experienced group featuring five seniors, including four starters. Justin Kahle (5-11) runs the show at point guard with Scott Schnipke (6-3, 12.3 ppg), Matt Warnecke (6-2) and Ryan Kleman (6-2) other senior leaders. Junior standout Jordan Basinger (6-3), who leads the Wildcats in scoring at nearly 13 points per contest, completes a starting unit that features all returning starters from a year ago.
Senior Preston Ellerbrock (6-5) and sophomores Kris Osterhage (6-2) and Logan Recker (6-0) provide depth for the PCL co-champions.
"We're really giving a good effort now," Kortokrax said after winning districts. "We're coming together at the right time. I appreciate what's happening to us."
Plymouth, which suffered its lone defeat of the season to Wooster Triway (64-58) in game three, is led by 6-3 junior guard Brook Turson, a second team all-Ohio performer a year ago. The son of the head coach was a tri-Player of the Year in the northwest district this season.
Turson, who is being recruited by the likes of Kent State, Wright State, Eastern Michigan, Western Carolina and Tulsa, is averaging 22.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3.1 steals per game. The all-time leading scorer at the school despite being just a junior is a three-time Firelands Conference Player of the Year. Turson has now scored more than 1,400 career points.
Cory Brown was honorable mention all-district and joins Turson in the starting lineup along with junior center Brandon McCalley, who had 10 points and eight rebounds in the district finals.
Dylan Brown also plays in the post with Smith, Mitch McKenzie and Brandon Burton other key contributors.

Boys hoops tourney: Regional tourney stays unkind to Plymouth By ROB MCCURDY March 18, 2009
BOWLING GREEN -- The calendar said it was St. Patrick's Day, but the Big Red Vikings must have felt like it was "Groundhog Day."
Making its third trip to the Division IV regional semifinals in four years, Plymouth met a familiar fate Tuesday in a 64-46 loss to Kalida at Bowling Green State University's Anderson Arena.
"We didn't play to the level we needed to play to," Plymouth coach Brad Turson said. "We didn't coach well enough and unfortunately that happened when (we got) to this level. There's nothing easy here."
In the Big Red's first regional appearance three seasons ago, eventual state champion South Webster beat them 82-37 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Last year, in their first-ever ride to BGSU, they were blitzed by Van Buren 68-52. This time it was Kalida's turn.
"I thought they played a tremendous game," Turson said of Kalida. "They came out well-prepared and well-coached and did a tremendous job and deserve to move on."
The Wildcats (21-4) will play Toledo Christian (18-6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the regional finals. The Eagles took care of McComb 53-41 in the first game.
Kalida was simply unstoppable, shooting 57 percent from the field in the first half and only getting better in the second, making 11-of-15 shots for 73 percent.
"What's frustrating about it is we talked about our last two appearances in the regional (where) we didn't play very good defense," Turson said. "We weren't happy with our half-court defense and we really tried to concentrate and give good effort on the defensive end.
"Take nothing away from Kalida, who made open shots when they had open shots, but they had open shots and that isn't what we wanted to do with our defense."
The Wildcats started the game making 11 of their first 13 field goals to open a 25-14 advantage with 5:12 showing in the half. From there, they experienced their only dry spell, and it coincided with All-Ohio point guard Brook Turson's most efficient span.
The 6-foot-3 junior guard scored 12 of his 17 points in the final five minutes of the second quarter to pull Plymouth within 28-26 at intermission.
"I felt the rhythm of the game a little more," Brook Turson said of his personal 12-3 run, "which is sad because I should have felt it the whole game. We were getting in the passing lanes and picking up the pressure on defense and that sparked our fans. When you get the fans behind you, a lot of adrenaline gets going."
However, Turson, the Big Red and the fans couldn't sustain it. After going 8-for-8 from the floor in the first half, Turson took just two shots in the final two quarters and missed both.
"They ran one guy with me all night and jumped out on screens," Brook Turson said of the box-and-one imposed on him. "They're very tough and a very physical defense to penetrate the gaps."
Plymouth matched Kalida's 12-of-21 shooting in the first two quarters, but went 6-for-17 in the second half as the Wildcats picked up the intensity.
"We were a little shaky on (Turson), a very good basketball player," said Kalida coach Dick Kortokrax, the state's all-time winningest coach. "He had 16 at the half and ended up with one extra point in the game, so I thought our defense really stepped up.
"On the offensive end and made more of our shots, so we were playing a very tough brand of basketball in the second half."
Jordan Basinger, a 6-foot-3 junior post, was especially tough on Plymouth, making 8-of-11 shots and finishing with 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Senior tag team partner Scott Schnipke was 5-of-7 with a pair of treys for 12 points, and point guard Justin Kahle added 11 points. As a team, they made 5-of-6 from the arc.
"We weren't pressuring the basketball out on the perimeter and they had open looks," Brook Turson said. "When you face a good basketball team in the regional semifinals, they'll knock down shots.
"It was kind of deja vu from last year."
He finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Coach Turson praised the play of senior guard Cory Brown who was 4-of-7 from 3-point range and finished with 14 points. Senior Dylan Brown came off the bench for eight points and four boards, while Cody Smith exits as the only Plymouth player to play in three regionals.
At 22-2, Plymouth set school records for most wins, fewest losses and most championships with three (Firelands Conference, sectional and district).
"We'll miss all of our seniors and what they brought to the program the last four years," Coach Turson said.
