May 18, 2009 DENISON:As always, hoops season never rest BY MATT DENISON
Southern Indiana basketball never sleeps. The high school season concluded in late March, but now many area prep players are showcasing their talent against top-notch competition at various AAU tournaments throughout the Midwest.
Twice each month, I plan to use this space as an outlet to keep area basketball junkies informed of offseason happenings, such as the world of AAU — or travel — basketball and the college recruiting process.
Many readers are probably familiar with Team Southern Indiana, a travel basketball club I direct each spring and summer in an attempt to help Southern Indiana players improve their game and gain college exposure.
Nearly 70 players — from sixth grade to the current junior class — are involved with TSI, playing in competitive tournaments from April to July.
From Jeffersonville and New Albany to Borden and West Washington, the program’s mission is to put area participants in an environment to be seen and evaluated by college coaches of all levels.
TSI’s 2010 Red team, which features recognizable names such as Steven Mayfield (Henryville), Drake Coleman and A.J. Adams (Jeffersonville) and Brad Benson, Jordy Martin and Tate Rohlfing (New Albany), in early April won the Indyball.com Shootout.
The TSI 2010 White squad also features a strong contingent from Clark and Floyd counties, including Andrew Heinz and Justin Sturgeon (Christian Academy of Indiana), Dustin Gardner (Henryville), Josh Green (West Washington), Cody Jackson (Silver Creek) and Jordan Todd (Jeffersonville).
The area’s most notable college prospect, New Albany junior Donnie Hale, is traveling with a Fort Wayne-based Spiece Indy Heat team. Hale led the team last month to a final eight appearance at the Pittsburgh Jam Fest, one of the nation’s most touted springtime tournaments.
Purdue and Xavier remain most interested in Hale, but neither school currently has tendered a scholarship offer.
“Purdue laid off for a while because they didn’t have any (scholarships open),” Hale said. “With Xavier recently having a coaching change, they now have some spots. I’d just like to play well as a team and individually (this summer) and get offers.”
Minnesota is the newest school to show interest, according to Hale, who hopes to get the recruiting process finalized before the start of his senior season.
“I’m trying to get it done before the (high school) season begins,” he said. “I’d like to focus on my senior year and help (New Albany) win a state championship.”
Jeffersonville’s Kegan Clark joins Hale on the Indy Heat team. Clark, who is recognized as a potential Division I prospect, is beginning to hear from a handful of schools. Eastern Illinois and Wright State were both in attendance at a recent Red Devil open gym, and are expected to follow Clark throughout July, the only month Division I and II college coaches are permitted to attend NCAA-approved AAU events.
“I’d like to commit to a college after July,” Clark said. “I want to have fun playing at school next year and not have to worry about it.”
With the July college evaluation period just around the corner, May is a crucial time for travel teams to gel. The AAU scene nearly comes to a halt in June as players return to their respective high school teams for instruction and summer play, making this month the final opportunity to iron out any kinks before clashing with intense competition in front of college evaluators.
Many locals are playing this weekend at the Adidas May Classic in Bloomington. Chicago and Fort Wayne will be popular destinations next weekend for the Memorial Day holiday, and Eddie Ford will host a smaller tournament on the month’s final weekend in Louisville at the Hoops facility.
Area high school coaches tend to agree that summer basketball — both school and AAU — plays an important role in developing players and assisting their program.
“I’ve told our kids that I love them playing AAU and I believe it’s good for college exposure,” Floyd Central coach Randy Gianfagna said. “My feeling is they’re going to find you either way if you can play, but AAU is a big help. If you get with the right situation, it can be very beneficial.”
Henryville coach Perry Hunter concurs.
“As long as it’s a positive situation, I don’t think (AAU) can hurt,” he said. “Playing basketball in an organized environment is typically a good thing.”
Join us in a few weeks for a recap of May tournament play and a look at some of the area’s most talented underclassmen. Visit www.hoosierhillshoops.com for more Southern Indiana basketball coverage.

June 12, 2009 Seniors shoot down juniors at New Albany By MIKE HUTSELL
NEW ALBANY — Both New Albany’s Donnie Hale and Jeffersonville’s Kegan Clark had their share of moments on Thursday. But ultimately, it was the Indiana All-Stars proving why they are considered the best in the state.
Mr. Basketball Jordan Hulls and Indianapolis Cathedral’s Errick Peck each scored 17 points, leading five players in double figures as the Indiana Senior Stars defeated the Juniors 109-94 at The Doghouse.
Hulls, bound for Indiana University after leading Bloomington South to the 2009 IHSAA Class 4A state title, drew a loud ovation from a few crimson-clad Hoosier fans during pre-game introductions and then went on to shoot 6-of-10 from the floor for the seniors.
Peck, who will play at Cornell next season, was 7-of-11 from the field and added four rebounds for the seniors, who will now begin their annual series against border rival Kentucky tonight at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The series finale will be Sunday at Bellarmine University.
Batesville’s Colt Ryan had 15 points, Louisville signee Stephan Van Treese added 13 and Purdue signee D.J. Byrd finished with 12.
Hale’s homecoming included a warm welcome from the New Albany faithful, and he opened the scoring for the juniors with a 3-pointer from near the top of the key — one of two the 6-foot-7 post player converted from downtown in the contest.
Hale had 15 points in the contest, shooting 6-of-9 from the field.
“It’s good being home and playing in front of the New Albany crowd,” said Hale. “I’ve had a lot of fun this week with the All-Star experience. Being on the junior team, I think I can get used to this. I’d like to come back and do it next year.”
Hale is a member of Indiana’s “Core” Junior Stars, meaning he ranks as one of the favorites a senior spot entering next season.
Clark, a member of the “South” Junior Stars, had 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. His night was highlighted by a first-half dunk that led to a three-point play.
“I saw I had a chance at the dunk. I didn’t even see the defender,” Clark said. “I felt him bump me when I was up there. I was surprised, I got a little excited about that one.”
Both Hale and Clark commented on their current recruiting status after the game.
Hale said he has a visit planned to Oklahoma State University next weekend for the school’s Elite Camp. He said two local schools right now lead in the race for his services.
“Right now Xavier and Purdue are my leaders,” said Hale, who noted he would visit Xavier later this month and would play at Purdue’s Team Camp with New Albany in the summer. “I’ve looked at both at them pretty much from the start.”
Hale’s hopes the timetable for his commitment is by the end of the summer.
“I’d like to get it done and focus on my senior year, but I want it to be the right choice,” Hale said. “I don’t want to rush it, but I’m comfortable right now with the schools I’m looking at.”
Clark said he has drawn recent interest from Wright State and Eastern Illinois.
“I’ve looked at both of those two. I was at a shootout at Wright State recently and saw the campus,” Clark said. “I haven’t really made any official visits anywhere, but I’m going to keep looking and hope I find the right fit.”
Purdue commitment Teron Johnson led the Juniors with 25 points. DeShaun Thomas added 13 and Julian Boatner scored 10.

Clark sets two college visits June 15, 2009
Jeffersonville senior-to-be Kegan Clark has scheduled two unofficial college visits.
Clark will tour Southern Illinois on June 16 and Western Kentucky on Aug. 7-8.
The 6-foot-4 forward also will participate in each school’s “elite camp” while on campus with other potential recruits.
The entire Jeffersonville team participated last weekend in a one-day high school team event at Wright State, where the Raiders offered a scholarship to Clark.

Kegan Clark lands first scholarship offer June 15, 2009
It’s been quite a week for Jeffersonville star Kegan Clark.
The 6-foot-4 senior-to-be turned in a solid performance last Thursday for the Junior All-Stars in their scrimmage versus the Indiana All-Stars at New Albany.
And Saturday, Clark received his first scholarship offer.
“(Wright State’s) campus is really nice and the coaches are cool,” said Clark, whose Jeffersonville team recently competed in a one-day shootout for high school teams at the school’s campus in Dayton, Oh. “I could definitely see myself playing there.”
Clark intends to complete the AAU circuit in July before making any decision.
“My plan is to finish out July and see what happens then,” he said.

# Jeffersonville (Ind.) is going to be really good across the river next season. Was my first look at Kegan Clark, who is a great athlete and has a scholarship offer from Wright State.

Clark off the board, commits to Wright State June 30, 2009
Kegan Clark, a 6-foot-4 forward from Jeffersonville, said today he has verbally committed to Wright State.
“After going through their campus and seeing how their coaches run things, I felt like it was the perfect fit for me,” Clark said. “(The coaches) think I have the potential to be a solid player, and that I can come in and contribute to the team.”
Clark, who also fielded interest from Eastern Illinois, IUPUI and Miami (Oh.), visited the Raiders’ campus — located in Dayton, Oh. — on two occasions.
The entire Jeffersonville team recently participated in a one-day shootout at Wright State, and Clark, along with his parents, took another tour today of the school.
“Having my college plans set will allow me to focus on my own game and on helping my team get to the next level with no pressure of a decision hanging over my head,” he added.
Jeffersonville coach Tim LaGrange is excited about his player’s decision, too.
“I feel it’s a great fit for Kegan,” LaGrange said. “I think it’s great for our program. But most importantly, it’s great for Kegan and his family. Anytime a kid can secure a free education - especially at a Division I school - that’s a big deal. As a program, we’re happy for Kegan.”
Next week, Clark will rejoin his Spiece Indy Heat AAU team which is slated to participate in five tournaments in July - the Hoosier Shootout (Indianapolis), the Kentucky HoopFest (Louisville), the Best of the Midwest (Indianapolis), the Hoop City Classic (Kansas City, Mo.) and the USSSA National Tournament (Fort Wayne).
