Shaker's Wells commits to CSU
Friday, November 02, 2007
From staff reports
Shaker Heights point guard Anthony Wells has made an oral commitment to play basketball at Cleveland State, Raiders coach Bob Wonson said Thursday.
Wells, a 6-1 junior, scored 12 points a game last season as a shooting guard.
"Anthony has become a point guard," Wonson said. "He's worked hard to become one. He had a great summer. He's an excellent athlete, has great quickness and he can handle the basketball."
Wells is a Minority Achievement Committee Scholar at Shaker Heights. He plans to join a Cleveland State program that, under coach Gary Waters, emphasizes the recruitment of local players. The Vikings' roster for the 2007-08 season includes five players from The Plain Dealer's seven-county coverage area.

Wisconsin-Green Bay Lands 2009 Guard Prospect From Illinois
December 11, 2007
Illinois Prep Bulls-eye has learned through reliable sources that Seth Evans, a 6'1 junior point guard from Seneca High School in Seneca, IL has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Evans chose the Phoenix over offers from North Dakota State and South Dakota State.
While Evans is primarily a point guard, he will actually be used at both guard positions once he gets to Green Bay. He flew under the radar this past spring and summer while competing on the Illinois Stars, an AAU program which is loaded with several talented guard prospects.
Evans is a gym rat who above everything else brings toughness. He is ultra-competitive and is a solid floor leader. In addition, Evans is a good shooter from 3-point range and is especially adept at the defensive end due to his strength and an outstanding work ethic. To top everything off, Evans knows how to win, having started as a freshman for a high school team that won the Illinois Class A state championship.
Kudos once again go out to Phoenix head coach Tod Kowalczyk and assistants Brian Wardle and Jon Harris, who continue to do an outstanding job of recruiting the state of Illinois. Once the 2009-10 season arrives, Evans will join 6'9 Pat Nelson from Niles North High School in Skokie, IL (currently a sophomore at UWGB) and 6'8 J. J. Henley from Lincoln Park High School in Chicago (currently a redshirt freshman at UWGB) on the Wisconsin-Green Bay roster.
Kowalczyk and the Phoenix will now look to add a wing prospect to their 2009 recruiting class and at the present time they are involved with several from the Chicago area, including 6'3 Xavier Humphrey from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, 6'3 Brian Conway from Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights and 6'5 Cortney Bell from Lincoln Park just to name a few.

Wisconsin Rapids junior Clayton Heuer gives verbal commitment to play college basketball at UW-Green Bay
By Mark Miller
Wishoops.net Editor
A year ago, Clayton Heuer averaged a modest two points and two rebounds per game while coming off the bench for the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln basketball team.
Fast forward 12 months and the scenario is much, much different.
A rapidly developing 6-foot-9 post player, Heuer ended the 2007-08 prep campaign averaging a team-best 17.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per outing for a Red Raiders’ squad that went 11-10 overall and 9-7 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
A unanimous first-team all-conference selection, Heuer’s strong showing as a junior recently yielded a scholarship offer from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. On Monday evening, Heuer called Phoenix coach Tod Kowalczyk and gave a verbal commitment to play collegiate basketball for the Horizon League member school.
“I think it’s a good fit,” Wisconsin Rapids coach Dan Witter said. “Selfishly, I will get the chance to see him play. His family wants to see him play as well. I think Green Bay is a level Clayton can play at with continued development.”
Currently ranked No. 7 among state prospects in the class of 2009 by Wishoops.net, Heuer is a skilled big man with a tremendous work ethic. He scored 30 points this season in an overtime loss against league champion Stevens Point, scoring in the lane, from the foul line and even from beyond the three-point arc.
“Clayton’s hands are much better than a year ago and he has a nice touch around the basket,” Witter said. “(Former Wisconsin coach) Dick Bennett came to watch him play recently and was very impressed with Clayton’s skill level. He said Clayton’s skills were at a high-major level, but that his foot speed and lack of explosiveness would prevent him from playing at that level.”
Witter said Heuer, who maintains a 3.2 grade-point average, had scholarship offers from Green Bay and NCAA Division II Minnesota-Duluth as well as interest from a number of other programs.
“Green Bay had really done the most with Clayton,” Witter said. “Every coach on staff saw him play. He’s not a city kid and kind of lives out in the country. Green Bay will be a good fit for him.”
Known for his toughness, skill level and desire to improve, Heuer gives Green Bay a proven rebounder as well as a physical presence in the lane for what will surely be a key recruiting class for Kowalczyk. Heuer joins Seth Evans of Illinois in what figures to be a four-man recruiting class to replace Cordero Barkely, Ryan Tillema, Terry Evans and Mike Schachtner.
“Clayton is a kid who loves to be in the gym and that will serve him well at Green Bay,” Witter said. “Even today, with our season just ending last week, he was in the gym playing hustle with two freshmen.”

Kurth gladly joins Crusaders
MATT KOPSEA
Tribune Staff Writer
This was one phone call that Tommy Kurth was glad he returned.
Getting the opportunity to talk with Valparaiso University head men's basketball coach Homer Drew was worth the time for the Penn High junior guard on Monday night.
The end result was Kurth verbally committing to play for the Crusaders starting in the 2009-10 campaign.
"All of this happened very quickly last night," recalled Kurth when reached by phone on Tuesday afternoon. "I just happened to be shooting around at (Elkhart) Memorial (High School) when I heard my phone ring. By the time I got there it had stopped, so I looked at who called and it was Coach Drew.
"When I called him back, he said I was their guy and that he was offering me a full ride (scholarship) to come and play at Valpo. This came out of nowhere and really caught me off guard. Even though it was the first offer I received from anyone, it didn't take long for me for to say yes to him."
The 6-foot-1 Kurth settled on Valparaiso after receiving interest from institutions like Wright State, Western Michigan, and Oakland University (Mich.).

Matt Kenney commits to VU men's basketball program
BY STEVE HANLON
Tuesday, April 08, 2008
Valparaiso University coach Homer Drew received a verbal commitment from Matt Kenney, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Mooresville, Ind. The junior averaged 18.5 points a game for Mooresville last year, along with six rebounds and five assists.
Kenney called Drew on Tuesday afternoon to give his verbal commitment.
"He asked me about spring break first," Kenney said with a laugh. "But this is the best fit for me. I like the coaches, the campus and the atmosphere there."

Winchester's Koch commits to Wright State
6-foot-5 junior guard has led Falcons to consecutive 2A state runner-up finishes
BY MYYON BARNES
PREP SPORTS COORDINATOR
It was a day of both happiness and relief for Tyler Koch.
The Winchester High School junior ended his recruitment process after making an official verbal commitment Monday to play basketball at Wright State University.
The 6-foot-5 guard took his third trip on April 21 to the school in Dayton, Ohio, which was the first to offer him a scholarship.
"They didn't pressure me at all," Koch said after the scholarship was initially offered in January. "They left it on the table and told me to think it through and do what's right."
The final visit made a lasting impression on the Falcon.
"I asked him on a scale of 1-10 where would you rate that school," Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey said. "He said 10 and I said you can't get any better than that."
Because he is a junior, Koch can't sign a national letter of intent until November. A letter of intent, unlike a verbal commitment, is binding.
The AP Third Team All-State selection and 2008 Palladium-Item Player of the Year averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals a game. He shot 51 percent from the floor and made 58 3-pointers on 41 percent shooting.
More than 30 schools recruited Koch in recent weeks, including Michigan, Notre Dame and Indiana. Mehaffey said Ball State, Evansville, Missouri State, Eastern Illinois and multiple mid and low major schools made offers.
Michigan coach John Beilein came to Winchester to watch Koch work out last week. But the bigger schools wanted to wait until recruiting season re-opened in July before making an offer.
"The thought about waiting until July was not attractive to Tyler," Mehaffey said. "They (Wright State) said he is their No. 1 recruit in the United States. I know it is (a relief) for him and it is for me too having the process over with."
Things got a little stressful for Koch during Winchester's state run this past season.
"I was trying to stay focused on high school basketball," he said.
"With all the mail, phone calls every once in a while and everyone asking me what I was thinking."
Koch, who led the Falcons to their second straight state runner-up finish, was named MVP of the Class 2A state title game after scoring a record 37 points.
He plans to work hard this summer and next season on certain aspects of his game.
"I need to get a lot stronger and get in better shape," Koch said. "My ball handling is not the greatest. I've got to keep my shot in tune and work on my vertical."
The Raiders, who are coached by Brad Brownell, finished 21-10 overall, 12-6 in the Horizon League and were 13-3 at home last season.
Koch thinks he will fit in with the current players after meeting them.
"I might be able to make a little impact my freshman year," he said. "I'm going to learn a lot from them before jumping into it."
Koch said playing in Dayton was also a factor because his family could still come and watch his games. In fact, Koch said he and his family visit the city often.
The high-flying Falcon is leaning toward either being a pilot or an athletic trainer. He has 1,400 career points and is about 200 away from breaking Winchester's career mark.
Although he is making his decision early, Koch is confident it is the correct one.
"Wright State kind of had my attention from the beginning," he said. "Everything just seemed right about it."

Iowa State transfer coming to VU
April 30th, 2008
The Valparaiso men’s basketball team has landed its first recruit of the spring signing period.
Johnson, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward who will sit out the 2008-09 season due to NCAA transfer rules, committed to the Crusaders Tuesday night after visiting campus last week. He will have two years of eligibility at VU.
“He can do it all,” said VU assistant coach Luke Gore. “The fans will love him cause he will play extremely hard.”
Johnson, a top-100 recruit out of Duluth East (Minn.) High School, was a first-team all-state selection his junior and senior seasons, averaging 27.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a junior and 27.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as a senior. His 2,930 career points rank fourth all-time in Minnesota high school basketball history.
But Johnson was in between positions at Iowa State, where he averaging 4.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in six starts as a freshman and 2.7 points and 1.4 rebounds in 27 games as a sophomore. Too short to be a power forward and too stocky to be a small forward, Johnson wasn’t seeing much playing time.
“He loved being at Iowa State,” said Iowa State assistant coach Jeff Rutter, “but he made the comment that you get a lot of years to watch basketball and only get a couple to play. I think he was hoping to play more. To be honest, in the Big 12, if there was anything that held back his minutes it was the fact that his matchup was difficult with his position in the league. (He was) kind of in between positions between the ‘four’ and ‘three’ spot.”
Johnson should be a much better fit in the Horizon League, which has only a handful of impact forwards – and several that are undersized but athletic, like Johnson. With Urule Igbavboa graduating after next season, Johnson could very well be the Crusaders’ No. 1 post option when he becomes eligible in 2009.
“He’ll bring a lot to the table,” Rutter said. “I think he’ll be a tough guy to not have on the floor. He just finds many ways to help the team be successful and help the team win. … He does have some range. He’s really got a knack for putting it on the floor, either from the high post or the wing. He’s a real crafty scorer. He’ll get into the lane and spin and give you some freeze moves, a shot fake, an up-and-under. He’s got a nice jump hook and turnaround. He’s got a very soft touch and just a good ability to score the basketball. He’s got great strength. He’s got kind of a tank body, he’s a big, strong kid. … There were several times he came in off the bench and gave us a spark. He’s a fierce competitor. He really works hard on the floor and doesn’t mind contact. And he’s just a great teammate on and off the floor. So (VU) landed a good one.”
Johnson and Igbavboa were AAU teammates for several years in Minnesota, and Rutter said that impacted Johnson’s decision.
“He had a terrific visit,” Rutter said. “He spoke highly of the people and of the school and just of the success that the program has had and will have in the future. And to be honest, I think another big key was Urule Igbaboa, just their relationship back from their AAU days.”
Though Johnson won’t play next season, he technically joins a 2008 recruiting class that already includes guards Erik Buggs and Logan Jones. VU now has three scholarships left to use towards the upcoming season.

UDM Signs Indiana Transfer Eli Holman
May 7, 2008
New UDM head coach Ray McCallum continued his retooling of the Titan men's basketball roster with today's addition of transfer Eli Holman, a 6-9, 250-pound center who played last winter as a freshman at the University of Indiana.
McCallum spent the last two seasons on the IU basketball staff and is well-acquainted with the newest Titan, who was part of a recruiting class ranked among the top five in the country for 2006-07. Holman played in six games as a Big Ten freshman before being sidelined for the rest of last season with a wrist injury.
"I'm really happy that Eli made the decision to come to UDM. I think me having been at Indiana and recruiting him was a big reason why he went there and he had a great opportunity there. But when you're involved in a young man's life for two years, you obviously build a relationship that he cared about and respected and he wanted it to continue," coach McCallum said.
"With his size, he's an athletic player who can finish around the basket, he can block shots, he rebounds, he has good hands, he's a good runner. I think the next phase for him is to continue to grow as a player in our practices. I'm glad he's here with us."
Holman, a native of Richmond, CA, looks at his transfer to UDM as an opportunity to have a fresh start in his college career.
"I want to thank the University of Indiana for the time that I spent there. I was treated fairly by all the people connected to the University. But, at this time, I think that it is in the best interest for me and my family to transfer to the University of Detroit Mercy. I wish the University of Indiana the best of luck," Holman said.
"Coach Mac is a big reason why I'm here. He recruited me out of high school, and he's been like a father figure to me. I think he'll make an impact on the University. He's going to put some more (championship) banners up in the arena and he's going to get us to the NCAA Tournament. I want to help him do that. I found out right away there are some great people on this campus. I'm very comfortable with my choice."
Holman, who has already started summer classes at UDM, was considered among the nation's top 100 prospects when he signed with the Hoosiers. He averaged 24.7 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks as a senior at Richmond High School, helping his team to the state Division II championship. He was also named the top defensive player in Northern California.
Holman is the third heralded recruit to sign with UDM since McCallum's hiring in mid-April, following junior college forwards Thomas Kennedy (Flint [MI] Mott CC) and Xavier Keeling (Wallace State [AL] CC). Kennedy was a second-team NJCAA All-American in 2008 after leading Mott to its second straight national championship. Keeling, who began his college career at Indiana, helped Wallace State to a 32-1 record and a berth in the Alabama Community College Conference championship game last season.
"I like the three players we've added," McCallum said. "I felt like we needed more front line help. The three of them have good size for their positions. They're versatile players. They have great work ethics, and they're great people. Collectively, they are going to improve our program. They're winners. They came from good programs and that's important. Winning breeds winning."

By Mark Miller
Wishoops.net Editor
Loyola University of Chicago has once again hit a home run on the recruiting trail in the state of Wisconsin.
After landing J.R. Blount of Whitefish Bay Dominican in 2005, Andy Polka of Oshkosh West in 2006 and John Benkoske of Oshkosh West in 2008, the Ramblers received a verbal commitment from class of 2009 prospect Ben Averkamp of Germantown Wednesday evening.
The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Averkamp, who is currently ranked fourth among state players in the class of 2009 by Wishoops.net, selected Loyola over scholarship offers from Horizon League rivals UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee. An extremely strong student who maintains a 4.0 grade-point average, Averkamp plans to enter Loyola's pre-med program in hopes of one day becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
"The coaches at Loyola sounded very surprised when I called and committed," Averkamp said. "I might have caught them a bit by surprise because when I visited last week, I didn't say anything about making a quick commitment. But, it was a good surprise.
"Having a medical school on campus and being close enough to home where my parents can come to watch me play were important factors. Loyola has a very nice campus along the lake. I feel Loyola is the best opportunity for me to continue my career toward being a doctor."
Averkamp averaged 15.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as a junior while leading Germantown to a 22-2 record and a spot in the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament for the first time in school history.
Averkamp earned first-team all-North Shore Conference honors as the Warhawks won the league championship with a perfect 14-0 record.
"Ben is pretty excited about Loyola," Germantown coach Steve Showatler said. "It got to the point where he knew he couldn't make a bad decision. It all came down to the academic side of things and wanting to get into a good pre-med program. From what I hear, Ben has never got a grade lover than an A.
"I think the mid-major level will be perfect for Ben. Everybody strives to be a Badger in this state and Ben did, too. But he doesn't have the size and strength to play at that level. At Loyola, I think Ben will be able to handle the ball in the open floor, play with his back to the basket and be a great passer out of the high post."
Averkamp went on an unofficial visit to Loyola last Thursday and took the weekend and the early part of this week to make his final decision.
"Ben wished he could play for all four of those schools, including Saint Louis," Showalter said. "Saint Louis kind of dropped off at the end, and then Ben had it down to three and he liked all three schools."
Former Oshkosh West coach Lance Randall is an assistant coach at Loyola, which finished 12-19 last season when Blount averaged 15.1 ppg and 2.6 apg and Polka chipped in 8.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg.
"I feel very blessed for the opportunities that were in front of me from the schools that recruited me," Averkamp said.

Pegues, Harris Reportedly Will Leave UNM
By Rick Wright
Of the Journal
Center Monquel Pegues is leaving the Lobo men’s basketball program, his former junior college coach said Wednesday.
Ryan Mantlo also said he has been told UNM forward Johnnie Harris is transferring to Valparaiso University in Indiana.
Mantlo, who coached Pegues at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C., said his former player was disappointed to be leaving UNM but parted on good terms with Lobos coach Steve Alford.
“I really don’t know too much (about the circumstances),” Mantlo said. “It had to do with graduation rates and stuff like that. Monquel’s grades weren’t the best his first semester, but he had a great second semester.
“Really, I think it just came down to coach (Alford) feeling like the best thing for Monquel was to go somewhere and find a place where he can really make a big-time impact.”
Last week, Alford told the Journal that academics would play the determining role in paring his 15-man roster down to the 13 scholarship players allowable under NCAA rules.
The Journal was unable to reach Pegues for comment. Alford was out of town Wednesday and was unavailable.
Tuesday, Alford had relayed through the UNM sports information department a comment that there was “no news” out of the program.
Pegues, who last week participated with UNM teammates at Alford’s Lobo Elite Camp, told the Journal at that time that “I ain’t transferring. I’m not going anywhere.”
Harris and Pegues signed with UNM last spring, adding size to a roster that sorely lacked big men to back up returning center Daniel Faris. They became expendable when Alford signed three prep-school prospects — Will Brown, Isaiah Rusher and A.J. Hardeman — for next season.
The Lobos also have 6-foot-10 freshman Kem Nweke, who redshirted last season.
Pegues and Harris, a 6-8 transfer from Chipola College in Florida, each played in all 33 of the Lobos’ games last season.
Harris started nine games and finished with averages of 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds.
Pegues, coming off the bench, averaged 1.9 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Their departure neatly solves Alford’s too-many-players, not-enough-scholarships problem.
Mantlo said he hadn’t discussed that issue with Pegues.
“I was more concerned with just how he was doing mentally and trying to help him make his next move,” he said.
Mantlo said Pegues wants to transfer to a Division I school for his remaining season of eligibility and was willing to sit out a year in order to do that. He has the option of transferring to a Division II school and playing immediately.
“Every (Division II) school in the nation is drooling,” Mantlo said, “but Monquel wants to sit out a year, get his grades together and then play his senior year somewhere (in Division I).”
Harris, who also has one year of eligibility left, would have to sit out a year if he transferred to Valparaiso or any other D-I school.
A message left by the Journal on Harris’ cell phone was not returned.
Staff writer Mark Smith contributed to this report.

Small-school star commits to Butler
August 1, 2008
Andrew Smith, a 6-9, 220-pound senior at Covenant Christian High School, has made an oral commitment to play basketball for Butler. He did so during an afternoon meeting today with coach Brad Stevens at Hinkle Fieldhouse, according to the player's father, Curt Smith.
That would leave the Bulldogs with one more scholarship to award in the Class of 2009. They will have no seniors on the '08-09 roster.
Smith, a Zionsville resident, saw his stock rise during a summer playing for Indiana Premier. He could not have attracted much attention at Class 2A Covenant Christian, which was 15-7 last season. He averaged 14.5 points and 10.6 rebounds, and shot .628 from the field.
Smith chose the Bulldogs "because they play team basketball," his father said. "And that will bring out his best play."
Considering Smith's modest credentials, this could be viewed as something of a gamble by Butler. However, when schools gamble, they usually do so on players with size. Plus, Smith had scholarship offers from Penn State, Ohio University (coached by former Butler aide John Groce) and Central Michigan. Coaches from Michigan and Notre Dame came to see him play, Smith's father said.
Smith has some indirect Butler ties. He is a distant cousin of recently graduated forward Pete Campbell. Smith's mother, Debbie, is a secretary in the university's history and anthropology department.
Smith's father is president of the Indiana Family Institute. Previously, he worked on Capitol Hill as a press secretary, campaign manager, communications director, state director and chief of staff over a 15-year span for Sen. Dan Coats and Rep. John Hostettler. Andrew Smith was born in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 9, 1990.
Smith's father said his son was impressed by many college coaches, but especially by Stevens.
"The Butler program is just so special," Curt Smith said. "I've never really encountered a sports program with so many supporters, and such positive comments."

The University of Detroit has landed a nice long-term prospect with the commitment of 6-foot-9 John Hoskins. Hoskins played at Warren Connor Creek West, a Class D school, last year, but played with Detroit Cody this summer. What you like about Hoskins is that he's tall, long and can shoot. He has post moves and, unlike a lot of young big guys, wants the ball, but he doesn't have the girth to always get in good position to receive it. Strength and toughness will have to be there for the college level, but you can say that about a lot of kids.
Hoskins is Bankhoops.com's No. 4 ranked senior power forward.

Laconia guard Derek Semenas will play college basketball at UW-Green Bay.
8/22/2008
By Mark Miller
Wishoops.net Editor
Another standout high school basketball player from the state of Wisconsin has decided to join the men’s basketball program at UW-Green Bay.
After receiving a verbal commitment from highly regarded Sussex Hamilton junior Kameron Cerroni on Monday, the Phoenix coaching staff got another dose of positive news when Laconia senior Derek Semenas announced he would be playing college hoops for the Phoenix.
The 6-foot-3 Semenas is a lanky combination guard who can score from the perimeter, get teammates involved off of drives to the basket and use his length and quickness to defend on the perimeter.
Semenas will join the Green Bay program in the fall of 2009 as a walkon, but has been guaranteed a scholarship in the future.
“I really liked what Green Bay had to offer,” Semenas said. “I got along with the coaches very well and the facilities are very nice as well.”
Semenas averaged 16.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest as a junior while helping Laconia to a 23-1 record and the Wisconsin Flyway Conference championship.
Currently ranked No. 8 among seniors in Wisconsin by Wishoops.net, Semenas earned first-team all-league honors in the Flyway and is one of two returning starters for coach Tom King.
The Green Bay coaching staff had the opportunity to evaluate Semenas over a two-day period in late June when Semenas and his Laconia teammates attended a team camp at the new Kress Events Center.
Semenas played exceptionally well throughout the event and Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk offered him a scholarship shortly after the camp.
“I’m going to concentrate on improving my ball handling and going to my left,” Semenas said. “I need to get stronger with my left hand.”
In addition to playing well for Laconia, Semenas turned in a solid showing on the travel-team circuit while competing for the Randolph Boys Club 17U squad coached by Hugh Roberts.
“Derek played very well for us this summer,” Roberts said. “He shot the ball extremely well. He’ll probably redshirt his first year at Green Bay to get bigger and stronger, and then I think he’ll have a very good career at Green Bay.”

Vikings Add Three To Men's Basketball Roster
Aug. 25, 2008
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The first day of classes of the 2008-09 school year came on Monday (Aug. 25) at Cleveland State and men's basketball head coach Gary Waters celebrated the day by announcing the addition of three players to the basketball roster.
Joining the Vikings are sophomore Aaron Pogue (Dayton, OH/Dunbar) and freshmen Ethan Anderson (Grand Rapids, MI) and Tim Kamczyc (Strongsville, OH). Pogue will redshirt during the 2008-09 season following his transfer from Vincennes Community College and have three years left starting in 2009-10 while both Anderson and Kamczyc will compete this winter and have four years of eligibility remaining.
"With the addition of Aaron, Tim and Ethan, we have helped to solidify our program for the years to come," Waters said. "Although I don't envision either of these players being able to help this year, I do believe that they have the potential to impact the lineup in the seasons to come."
Pogue, a teammate of CSU's Norris Cole while at Dunbar High, was ranked as the second best power forward in the state after averaging 14.0 points and 14.7 rebounds while helping Dunbar to win its second straight state tournament.
A 6-9, 285-pound forward, he averaged 7.1 points and 5.6 rebounds, starting 14 times in 22 games as a freshman at Vincennes.

BREAKING NEWS!!!
Chase Simon, who was one of the top 10 Players in Michigan's loaded 2007 class, decided to transfer to Detroit today. Out of high school, Chase was being recruited by high majors, and opted to go with Ernie Ziegler at Central Michigan, who is one of the best mid-major recruiters in the biz. Chase decided to transfer from Central Michigan last year, but has landed at Detroit with Ray McCallum. Detroit will quickly shoot to the top of the Horizon League with the players they have acquired since McCallum took over the reigns at U of D. Remember, they also signed 7'3 Jason Bennett who was a Top 100 prospect out of high school in 2006, Eli Holman a 6'10 PF who played at Indiana last year, but red-shirted; also 6'7 Thomas Kennedy from Mott JC (Flint, MI), who was a JC All-America, as well as other good players. So it looks like the U-D Program is on the up and up.

Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk, And The University Of Wisconsin-Green Bay Land Class Of 2009 Bolingbrook Star Troy Snyder
Chicago Hoops
September 6, 2008
Class of 2009 Bolingbrook High School basketball star Troy Snyder of the RBS All-Stars has given a verbal commitment to play his college basketball for head coach Tod Kowalczyk, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Snyder ranks as one of the top 2009 prospects in the state of Illinois.
Snyder, a 6'5" wing, is a highly versatile player who makes things happen both inside and outside. Snyder was the driving force behind Darryl Royster's RBS team that won the AAU West Coast National Championship, the Gold Division title at the National Youth Basketball Championships, and the Silver Division title at the Chicago Summer Classic.
Snyder told ChicagoHoops.com that he loved both the facilities at Wisconsin-Green Bay, and also the players. He went on to note that UWGB was "My type of place."
Snyder currently see's his ability to score the basketball as the strongest part of his game, and he is very much looking forward to the coming high school season at Bolingbrook.
This year, Bolingbrook figures to rank among the top teams in the state of Illinois with a star-studded lineup of players that includes both Snyder, and also Wisconsin-bound Class of 2009 star Diamond Taylor, who has transferred in from St. Joseph.
Head coach Tod Kowalczyk is reaping huge dividends in the state of Illinois by having a staff that includes a major heavy hitter in assistant coach Angres Thorpe, and also Brian Wardle. Snyder will join fellow Illinois high school star Seth Evans of Seneca High School, and the Illinois Stars in the UWGB 2009 recruiting class.

6'9" St. Joseph Standout Louis Green Verballed To The University Of Illinois-Chicago
Chicago Hoops
September 14, 2008
Class of 2009 St. Joseph High School basketball standout Louis Green of the Illinois Flames has given a verbal commitment to play his college basketball for the University of Illinois-Chicago. Green rates as one of the top post prospects in the Illinois Class of 2009.
Green, a 6'9" post, brings size, strength and mobility to the post. He is a player who has improved tremendously over the course of the past three years, and was a standout performer this spring and summer on the travel team circuit with the Illinois Flames.
Green told ChicagoHoops.com that the fact that Illinois-Chicago was close to home was a strong factor in his decision to attend the school. Green first caught the attention of Illinois-Chicago during the Chicago Summer Classic in July, and now is on board in their 2009 recruiting class.
Green has been a varsity regular for St. Joseph since his sophomore season when he got considerable time in the paint for a squad that featured Evan Turner (Ohio State), and Demetri McCamey (Illinois). He will again anchor the St. Joseph frontcourt this coming season on a team that will also be led by Nate Rogers and DeAndre McCamey, once he returns from a knee injury.

Chanel’s McKnight penciled in at YSU
By JOHN VARGO
Tribune Chronicle
September 16, 2008
Lamar McKnight's pencil strokes are meticulous. His brush strokes are precise. The artwork is always with a purpose.
The 6-foot-5 St. Peter Chanel senior forward can play anywhere from a point guard to post for the Firebirds, displaying his soaring jump shots and fierce rebounding and blocking abilities.
After Saturday's official visit to Youngstown State University and playing in an open gym with the men's basketball team, McKnight made a verbal commitment.
YSU coach Jerry Slocum, nor any of his assistants, can officially comment on McKnight until he signs his National Letter of Intent.
"(YSU) really likes him playing the three or four spot," Chanel coach and Girard High School graduate Bernie Tarr said.
McKnight can sign from Nov. 12-19, which is the early signing period set by the NCAA.
When asked, McKnight said it's a process he can put into a portrait.
"(It's like) someone with YSU on their mind, but still checking out other places at the same time," McKnight said. "At the same time, YSU is still in the back of their mind. Saying in other words, you already know where your home is, but you want to explore other places in case things didn't go right."
He chose YSU over Wagner, which is on Staten Island (N.Y.) and Radford (near Virginia Tech). All three had strong art programs and were the only three offering him scholarships.
McKnight, who plans to start out as a graphic design major, was recruited by Kent State, Northern Arizona, Robert Morris, Michigan (during his junior year), Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Buffalo and Wright State.
All the schools were interested because he averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and shot more than 50 percent from the field last season as Chanel advanced to the Division IV state Final Four. McKnight scored 23 points, had 14 rebounds and four blocks during the Firebirds' loss to Sugarcreek Garaway.
McKnight saw his older cousins and other family members draw, which spurn his artistic side at age 3.
"I saw that I was good and I kept pushing myself to do it," he said.
His arms then became used more on the basketball court. McKnight displayed that during the regional final at the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse against then No. 2-ranked Malvern. He scored a game-high 31 points.
"He has the ability to shoot," Tarr said. "He's very athletic at 6-5. He plays way above the rim. He has a lot of versatility. He's able to defend a two-guard to some post."
His mother, Beatrice Williams, was instrumental in the recruiting process. She'll be within driving distance of all home games at Beeghly Center, close when the Penguins venture to Cleveland State University and a couple hours away from Wright State University and the University of Detroit.
"She really doesn't know a lot about basketball, but she surprised me with all the questions she asked," McKnight said. "While I was learning, she was learning at the same time. I got two perspectives. I got one in my eyes and one in my mother's eyes. Coach Tarr also played an important role, too."
From McKnight's perspective, art and basketball are intertwined. It's displayed in his favorite work of art.
"It's all in pencil - a picture of a man squatting down," he said. "There was a basketball next to him. He was playing basketball - playing hard. Now he's relaxing, thinking about it. I was like that my freshman year in school."
Now, YSU has penciled in its first recruit for the 2009-10 season.

Two guards commit
By CHARLES F. GARDNER
Sept. 25, 2008
The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball program has received verbal commitments from two high school players: combo guard Ja’Rob McCallum of Marion High School in Marion, Ind., and shooting guard Lonnie Boga of McCluer High School in Florissant, Mo.
McCallum, a 6-foot-1, 168-pound guard, helped Marion reach the Indiana Class 4A state championship game last spring, where his team lost to Brownsburg, 40-39, on a buzzer-beating shot.
Marion finished 24-5 last season, and McCallum averaged nearly 10 points and four assists as a junior.
McCallum made an official visit to the UWM campus last weekend and decided to commit on Wednesday night. The fall signing period opens Nov. 12, and both players are expected to sign letters of intent then.
“I just felt the program is real family-oriented,” McCallum said in a phone interview on Thursday. “Coach (Rob) Jeter came to our school on the first day he could recruit, and that meant a lot. He’s somebody I’d love to play for.”
McCallum said he also was considering Drake, Rice and Detroit before choosing UWM. McCallum’s uncle, Ray McCallum, is the head coach at Detroit.
“I’m just excited about being able to commit and having the stress out of the way,” said McCallum, who is preparing for his senior high school season. “I feel comfortable with Milwaukee.”
McCallum also played for the SYF Players AAU team.
He gained some media attention in April when he played 3-on-3 against Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, before the Indiana primary. McCallum and friends Blake Hancock and Devin Randle, all from Marion, took part in the event in Kokomo, Ind.
“It was amazing; it was real fun,” McCallum said. “He was a down-to-earth guy.”
Boga, at 6-2 and 200 pounds, is a versatile athlete who is an all-St. Louis area performer in football (a wide receiver, linebacker and punter) and competes in track.
He averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds as a junior in high school and also played for the St. Louis Eagles AAU team.
Boga’s coach is Erwin Claggett, former star guard for Saint Louis University.

VU men's hoops team gets verbal commitment
DAVID ROBB
Wednesday, October 08, 2008
The Valparaiso University men's basketball team has picked up another in-state recruit – by way of Southern Illinois and Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill. – for next year's class.
Kokomo native Brandon Wood, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman shooting guard at Highland, verbally committed to the Crusaders on Tuesday night.
"What makes him tough is he can shoot it but he can also put the ball on the floor," said Ronnie Dean, Wood's coach at Highland. "He's the type of guard that can be all-conference in the Horizon League by his junior or senior year."
Wood averaged 3.7 points – including a 15-point performance against Northern Illinois – in six games with the Salukis last season before a stress fracture in his foot forced him to take a medical redshirt. He transferred to Highland in the offseason.
Wood, who also had offers from Detroit, UW-Milwaukee and American University, joins a 2009 recruiting class that already includes Mooresville guard Matt Kenney, Penn guard Tommy Kurth and Henry Sibley (Minn.) forward Chris Halvorsen.
"He'll be one of my better players," Dean said. "I'd be very disappointed if he didn't average about 15 points a game."

Valpo lands Australian swingman Broekhoff
By Mark Lazerus
October 23, 2008
Valparaiso has gone Down Under once again to find a frontcourt player of the future. The Crusaders received a verbal commitment from Australian 6-6 swingman Ryan Broekhoff. He'll join the Crusaders next fall. VU picked up forward Cameron Witt from Tasmania this past offseason.
From the way one of his assistant coaches at the Australian Institute of Sport, Paul Goriss, described him, Broekhoff sounds an awful lot like the departed Samuel Haanpaa.
"His strength is the catch-and-shoot 3, he's just shoots the ball extremely well," Goriss said. "He was the MVP of the under-20 national championship in February of this year."
Goriss said Broekhoff is a little raw and needs to put on some weight, something he's already been working on. But he sees big things in about two or three years from Broekhoff, once he "fills in a bit."

Raiders land 'sleeper of the century' guard
By Marc Katz
Saturday, October 25, 2008
FAIRBORN — Darian Cartharn, a 6-foot guard from Canal Winchester, visited a Wright State practice Friday, Oct. 24, confirming a verbal commitment to the Raiders' basketball team.
"I like the coaches and the facilities," said Cartharn, who played two tournament games at the Nutter Center, but lost them both. "I'm 0-2 in the Nutter Center, so I want to change that."
Cartharn is the second commitment to the Raiders for the 2009-10 season. Tyler Koch, a 6-4 guard from Winchester, Ind., is the other, leaving WSU with a scholarship to give.
WSU coach Brad Brownell said he was happy to land Cartharn, and joked, "We've got Tyler Koch of Winchester, Ind., and now Darian. We've got someone from Winchester coming from two states."
Cartharn averaged about 12 points last season for Canal Winchester while playing with B.J. Mullins, a freshman at Ohio State this year.
"I think we'll be better this year, more versatile," Cartharn said. "Last year, we threw the ball to B.J. a lot."
InsidePrepSports.net calls Cartharn "our sleeper of the century, aka Mummy-Man for the 2009 class."

Butler Signs Local Men's Basketball Prospect
Nov. 12, 2008
Butler head coach Brad Stevens continued a successful central Indiana recruiting run with the signing of 6-10 center Andrew Smith of Covenant Christian High School on the first day of the NCAA Fall Signing Period. Smith is the lone player the Bulldogs expect to sign during the fall period.
"We're really excited about the addition of Andrew Smith to the Butler basketball family," said Stevens. "He has demonstrated himself to be a high achiever both on and off the court throughout his high school career."
Smith averaged 14.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots, while shooting 63% from the floor last year. He helped Covenant Christian to a 15-7 season and to the Class 2A sectional finals. The 230-pound post player also had a strong summer performance as a member of the Indiana Premier AAU team.
"Andrew not only has great size and ability, but he combines that with very good basketball instincts and athleticism," added Stevens.
Smith will join a Butler team that already includes nine Indiana players. Stevens signed three talented central Indiana players, Gordon Hayward of Brownsburg, Garrett Butcher of Edgewood and Chase Stigall of New Castle Chrysler, a year ago, and all three went on to earn All-State recognition and a spot on the Indiana All-Star Team.
Butler is coming off a school-record 30-4 campaign that saw the Bulldogs ranked in the "Top 25" for 19 consecutive weeks. Stevens, who was in his first season as a head coach, guided Butler to a championship at the Great Alaska Shootout, regular season and tournament titles in the Horizon League and a first round win in the NCAA Tournament. This year's 14-player Butler team has no seniors and just four juniors.

Australian recruit gives verbal to Crusaders
BY PAUL OREN
Wednesday, November 12, 2008
VALPARAISO | While the fax machine is expected to start humming early this morning in the Valparaiso University men's basketball office, coach Homer Drew will have to wait for at least one National Letter of Intent on the first day of the early signing period.
Ryan Broekhoff has given his verbal commitment to join the Crusaders beginning in the 2009-10 season, but is not allowed to sign his National Letter of Intent until sometime in the middle of the night in his native Australia.
Broekhoff then needs to get the letter to his mother for signature, which could be tricky, given that the 6-foot-6, 18-year-old small forward lives at the Australian Institute of Sport, where he is coached by Marty Clarke. Brokehoff will become the second AIS player on the roster after fellow countryman Cameron Witt joined the Crusaders last summer.
"He won't be able to do anything until players are able to sign in America," Clarke said. "Then he'll get all the information to his family and he'll get it in."
Whether Broekhoff's fax comes through today, when the Crusaders are expected to receive LOI's from guards Matt Kenney (Moorseville) and Tommy Kurth (Penn) as well as Minneapolis forward Chris Halvorsen, or in the near future, Clarke thinks Valparaiso is getting a solid, intelligent basketball player.
"He is maybe like the European guards that think the game out a little more," Clarke said. "He is a good offensive player who shoots the three well and he can also put it on the floor."
Clarke is also quick to point out that Broekhoff will be a different player a year from now when he reports to Valparaiso.
"He is physically immature at the moment, with a very young body that is still growing, but he is very smart in basketball," Clarke said. "He's not the super athlete, but he doesn't have to rely on his athleticism. Another year in the gym will really help him physically."
Broekhoff chose Valparaiso over several other Division I programs including Pacific and Northern Iowa. Clarke said that a familiar relationship with the Drew family made the recruiting process painless.
"We've had regular contact with Valpo for a number of years," Clarke said. "I have a good relationship with the Drews. Bryce at Valpo and Scott at Baylor and now with Coach (Chris) Sparks."
Southern Illinois transfer Brandon Wood has also made known that he intends to transfer to Valparaiso after finishing a year at Highland Community College. The quintet of new players will join Iowa State transfer Cory Johnson, who is currently sitting this year out due to NCAA transfer requirements, on the active roster next season.
The Valparaiso women's basketball team is expected to receive faxes from guards Skyler Gick (Benton Central) and Laura Richards (Connersville).
NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting on players until they have received the signed letters of intent.

Louis Green signs letter of intent with UIC
Nov. 12, 2008
Chicago, Ill.- UIC head men's basketball coach Jimmy Collins announced on Wednesday, Nov. 12 that Louis Green (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph H.S.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Flames beginning in the 2009-10 campaign.
Green is a 6-foot-9, 240-pound center who plays for legendary head coach Gene Pingatore at St. Joseph High School in Westchester. A varsity starter since his sophomore season, Green was a teammate of current NCAA Division I student-athletes Demetri McCamey and Evan Turner on the Chargers' 2007 IHSA Sectional championship squad.
"Louis is a young man who likes to be aggressive around the basket," said Collins. "However, he is not limited to that. He can step out and hit the 15-footer, he handles the ball well, he can pass it well, and he fits into our program in terms of being a smart player who is very coachable, and he is only going to get better.
"He is also learning from a legend and a man I really respect in Gene Pingatore, who is known across the coaching profession as a great developer of talent."
Green played this past summer with the Illinois Flames AAU team under coach Dedrick Shannon.

Detroit-Mercy Lands 2009 Post Prospect From Chicago Area
November 12, 2008
10:00 A.M. CST
Kyle Cain, a 6'7 post prospect from Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City, IL has verbally committed and will sign a letter of intent with the University Of Detroit-Mercy. Cain chose the Titans over offers from Loyola-Chicago and Lewis University.
Cain took an official visit to the Detroit campus this past weekend (November 7-8). The fact that Titan head coach Ray McCallum and assistant coach Derek Thomas enjoy an outstanding relationship with Illinois Warriors head coach Larry Butler proved to be an instrumental factor in allowing them to secure Cain's commitment.
Cain came up big in several contests this past spring and summer while playing on the traveling team circuit for the Warriors. During that stretch he was often called upon to defend the opposing team's best post player. His ability to do that on more than one occassion was just one of the things that convinced us that he is undoubtedly D1 caliber.
In addition to being a quality interior defender, Cain is also a strong rebounder and a more than capable scorer in the paint area. While the bulk of his offensive skills are with his back to the basket, he has also shown a solid mid-range game, as he is capable of hitting shots along the baseline or anywhere inside the lane. Cain must now work on extending his range and playing with more consistency.

Men's Basketball Signs All-State Recruit Lamar McKnight
Head Coach Jerry Slocum announced Wednesday that Lamar McKnight, a Division IV Third-Team All-Ohio selection, has signed a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period to join the Youngstown State men’s basketball program.
McKnight, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound forward from Bedford St. Peter Chanel High School, averaged a double-double as a junior with 17 points and 10 rebounds per game while leading Chanel to the Division IV Ohio state Final Four. McKnight also posted three blocks per game and shot more than 50 percent from the field.
Slocum said McKnight is a well-rounded player who will fit into the Penguins’ system.
“We are very excited to sign another Cleveland-area player who we feel is one of the best in the city,” Slocum said. “What is intriguing about Lamar is he has a great inside game and also has the ability to make shots from the perimeter. He comes from a great high school program and is a player who can play multiple positions in our system.”
McKnight added that Youngstown State was the perfect fit both academically and athletically.
“I chose to go to Youngstown State because it worked to my advantage in both basketball and graphic design,” McKnight said. “I fit in well with the players and really like the coaches, and Youngstown State also has a great art program. Plus, it is close enough to home that my family will be able to see me play.”
A three-time All-North Coast League First-Team selection, McKnight scored a game-high 31 points in a regional final victory over then-No. 2 ranked Malvern and posted 23 points and 14 rebounds in a state-semifinal loss to Sugarcreek Garaway.
McKnight intends to major in graphic design at Youngstown State.
Student-athletes have until Nov. 19 to sign a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period.
Youngstown State opens the 2008-09 campaign against Buffalo, Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.

Kowalczyk Signs Four for Green Bay Men's Basketball
Phoenix nets four prep stars in early signing period
Nov. 13, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay men's basketball coach Tod Kowalczyk announced the signing of four prep standouts to National Letters of Intent on Thursday. The four players are: Seth Evans (Marseilles, Ill.), Clayton Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), Matt Smith (Whitewright, Texas) and Troy Snyder (Bolingbrook, Ill.).
"It is with great pleasure that we announce the signing of these four student-athletes," Kowalczyk said. "I think individually, and more importantly, collectively, what this class brings to Green Bay basketball is a great deal of potential, high basketball IQ and toughness. I don't know if I've ever been more excited about a class because of the growth that each guy is capable of making."
Evans is a 6-foot, 180-pound point guard who earned second-team all-state accolades from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and third-team mention from the Associated Press last year. The two-time first-team All-Interstate 8 Conference player and academic all-conference pick ranks fifth on Seneca High School's career scoring list with 1,255 points, as well as first in steals and second in assists.
In 2007-08, Evans claimed all-area honors after averaging 21.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.5 steals per game. As a freshman, he started every game for the Fighting Irish, which finished 30-0 and won the Class A state title. During his time, Seneca won 65 consecutive games, which ranks as the second-longest winning streak in Illinois basketball history. He played AAU basketball for the Illinois Stars, and is coached by his father, Doug, at both the prep and AAU levels.
"Seth is a coach's dream," Kowalczyk said. "He is a coach's son, an unbelievable worker, a great team player, a diligent student and is as tough as they come. He will be a leader of this program in the future."
Heuer (pronounced higher) is a 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward from Lincoln High School who was named honorable mention all-state in 2008 by the Associated Press. He is the state's fifth-ranked senior in the class of 2009 according to the Wisconsin Sports Network.
As a junior, Heuer averaged 17.3 points and 9.2 rebounds and was named first-team all-conference. In addition, he was tabbed as a WSAW-TV All-Star. A member of the Wisconsin Blaze AAU team, he earned all-tournament team mention at a tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind.
"Clayton is a skilled post player who possesses a lot of intangibles," Kowalczyk said. "He has good hands and a great feel for the game. Clayton is a player who, with a redshirt year, will be ready to play in this league."
Smith, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward, averaged 19.8 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game as a junior for Whitewright High School. He was member of the 2007 Texas all-state team as well as an all-region selection. In addition, he is the two-time reigning district Most Valuable Player.
As a sophomore, Smith helped lead the Red Raiders to a 30-win season and a berth in the Class 2A state semifinals. As a freshman, he was named District 15-2A Newcomer of the Year. Smith played AAU basketball for the Dallas Hoop Dreams.
"Matt is a long, athletic, versatile forward," Kowalczyk said. "He has a tremendous upside and is a very coachable player. We look for him to make an immediate impact on our program."
Snyder, a 6-foot-6 forward for Illinois Class 4A powerhouse Bolingbrook, averaged 15 points and nine rebounds per game as a junior while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. He totaled 10 double-doubles and had high games of 27 points and 17 rebounds.
Over the summer, Snyder played for the RBS All-Stars, which won the AAU West Coast National Championship, the Gold Division title at the National Youth Basketball Championships and the Silver Division title at the Chicago Summer Classic.
"Troy is a long, athletic wing player who we believe can be a replacement for Terry Evans," Kowalczyk said. "He has a great deal of potential and can step in immediately and contribute to our success."

Loyola Men's Basketball Signs Pair To National Letters Of Intent
Nov. 13, 2008
CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago men's basketball coach Jim Whitesell announced today the signing of a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on the first day of the Early Signing Period. Joining the Ramblers' program for the 2009-10 will be forward Ben Averkamp (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) and guard Gabriel Kindred (Oakland, Calif./Worcester Academy, Mass.).
Averkamp was a 2007-08 Associated Press Second Team All-State selection after posting 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 3.0 assists per game at Germantown High School. The 6-foot-7, 215 pound forward led head coach Steve Showalter's Germantown High squad to a 22-2 record and its first state tournament appearance last season. A member of the National Honor Society, Averkamp also carries a 4.0 grade-point average. In addition to earning First Team All-North Shore Conference and North Shore Conference Player of the Year honors last winter, Averkamp was a WBCA First Team All-State selection and is currently ranked No. 3 for the Wisconsin Class of 2009 by wishoops.net.
"Ben is a forward who can face up and score or score down low," Whitesell said. "We think he can play both the big forward and center spots. He is a very team-oriented player, he has been schooled in the game by coach Steve Showalter, he is a good rebounder and has the ability to score. Much like our other signee, Gabriel Kindred, Ben has the ability to make an immediate impact in our program. Ben was drawn to Loyola because he wants to major in pre-med and the fact it is within close proximity to his hometown was appealing to him. Our roster is also filled with several Wisconsin natives, including J.R. Blount, Andy Polka, John Benkoske and Tom Neary, which helped Ben feel comfortable with the program. This is an impressive young man both on and off the court."
Kindred, who currently is attending Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass., is a 6-foot-1 point guard, who previously played at Fremont High School in California. Last season at Worcester Academy, he averaged 10.0 ppg, 4.0 apg and 2.0 spg under the direction of coach Ed Reilly and is regarded as one of the top players in his prep school league.
"Gabriel is a point guard who can make an immediate contribution," Whitesell said. "He comes from the best prep school league in the country and is a good student. A consummate point guard who has been well coached by Ed Reilly, Gabriel has exceptional leadership qualities and can adjust to numerous styles of play. Our staff did a great job throughout Gabriel's recruitment. Gabriel chose Loyola for its outstanding academic reputation and urban setting. We couldn't be happier about him joining our program and think he can be an impact guard."
Loyola raises the curtain on the 2008-09 campaign when it hosts Rockhurst on Nov. 14.

Crusaders Ink Pair of Guards to National Letters of Intent
Valparaiso head coach Homer Drew announced this afternoon that guards Matt Kenney and Tommy Kurth have both signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Crusader program as freshmen for the 2009-2010 season.
Kenney, a 6’3”, 190 lb. guard out of Mooresville [Ind.] H.S., was an honorable mention All-State performer last year as a junior, averaging 18.7 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals per game for the Pioneers while also connecting at a 56% clip inside the arc. He also earned All-Indianapolis Metro West First Team accolades, as well as All-Conference honors in 2008.
“Matt comes from a very athletic family and his sister Lauren is currently playing for Valpo’s women’s team,” said Drew. “Matt is very athletic for his size and can play above the rim. He can be effective slashing to the paint, and he has also worked hard on his shooting and has extended his range out to the 3-point line.”
Kurth, a 6’1”, 175 lb. guard out of Penn [Ind.] H.S., is ranked as the #54 point guard in the Class of 2009 by ESPN.com. He has been among the top-25 scorers in the area the last two years and was also an All-State honorable mention performer in 2008. A two-time All-Conference honoree, Kurth has been a part of two conference and sectional champion squads with the Kingsmen, who also captured the regional title and advanced to the semi-state final during his freshman year. He was named sectional MVP as a sophomore and earned All-Sectional honors as a junior.
“Tommy also comes from a very athletic family,” said Drew. “He is a true point guard who handles the basketball extremely well with either hand. He has wonderful court vision as well. He can also move over to the two-guard, as he has improved his shooting with dedication and hard work.”

Crusaders Add Forward to NLI Signees
Crusader men’s basketball head coach Homer Drew announced today that forward Chris Halvorsen has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join fellow signees Matt Kenney and Tommy Kurth as freshmen in the Valpo program for the 2009-2010 season.
Halvorsen, a 6’8”, 205 lb. forward out of Henry Sibley [Minn.] H.S., helped lead the Warriors to an appearance in the state championship game last season and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. A two-time All-Conference performer, including a unanimous selection last year, Halvorsen is also a two-time All-Metro Defensive Team honoree. He is a team captain this year for a Henry Sibley squad that is ranked preseason #2 in the state of Minnesota and #3 in the Midlands Region. Also a standout in the classroom, Halvorsen carries a 3.6 grade point average and is a member of National Honor Society.
“We are delighted to add Chris as our third signee in the early signing period,” said Drew. “Like both Matt and Tommy, Chris comes from a very athletic family, as his dad played collegiate basketball and his older brother is currently playing collegiately. Chris is a very athletic player with a 40” vertical leap. He plays above the rim, gets up and down the floor very well and is very mobile for his size. Like the other two, he is also a strong student.”

Lee accepts offer to play at Detroit
By Jeff Washburn
November 13, 2008
Lamar Lee, the former McCutcheon guard and 2007 Lafayette Jeff graduate, has accepted a basketball scholarship offer from first-year Detroit Mercy head coach Ray McCallum.
The 6-foot-1 Lee spent last season on scholarship at Indiana State but transferred to Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill., where he currently is playing for the Cougars.
McCallum, whose Titans open the 2008-09 regular season Friday night at Purdue, began recruiting Lee this fall.
"They came in here (to Highland) to watch us practice and work out," Lee said Wednesday afternoon. "They kept in touch, and I took my visit two weeks ago. I felt really comfortable and liked their coaching staff."
McCallum, who played for Muncie Central's 1978 and '79 state championship teams, went on to star and later coach at Ball State.
"The way coach McCallum likes to play fits my style," Lee said. "When I watched them practice, I liked the things they are doing. Him being from Indiana also helped us connect."
While Lafayette Jeff coach Scot Bunnell is a former Ball State assistant coach, Lee said the initial contact from McCallum was separate from Bunnell.
The coaches eventually talked about the guard who was denied an opportunity to play for the Bronchos in 2006-07 when the IHSAA ruled his transfer from McCutcheon was athletic-based.
"I didn't have a lot of opportunities to play at Indiana State last season, so I'm very happy to have a chance to get back into Division I basketball," Lee said.
"I primarily will play the point, but I also could play some combo guard for them. This is the right fit for me."
Lee will be eligible to play at Detroit in 2009-10. He will major in business.
Lee missed Highland's first four games with a slight right knee injury but anticipates returning to action soon. Highland is 3-1.
Bunnell is happy Lee has found a new Division I home. Bunnell was a member of McCallum's Ball State staff for two seasons.
"Ray called me out of the blue and asked about Lamar," Bunnell said. "I said Lamar is a can't-miss guy in that system. Ray likes guards who can dribble, pass and shoot.
"Detroit needs a guard who can step in and play right away and run the show. Lamar has had a lot of experience. Physically, he really has filled out and gotten stronger."

Broekhoff Joins Crusader Commits for 2009-2010 Season
Valpo men’s basketball head coach Homer Drew announced today that the Crusaders have received a National Letter of Intent from Ryan Broekhoff and that he will join the program as a freshman for the 2009-2010 campaign.
Broekhoff, a 6’6”, 190 lb. guard from Frankston, Victoria, Australia, is in his second year at the prestigious Australian Institute of Sport. Named the Australian Junior National Male Player of the Year earlier this year, Broekhoff has twice been a member of Victorian state teams that won national championships, in 2007 with the Victoria U18 squad and in 2008 with the Victoria U20 squad. He was also named U20 national MVP in the latter championship. Broekhoff was also selected as a member of the Australian U19 Emus team that won bronze medals at the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany and The William Jones Cup in Chinese Taipei.
“We are delighted to get another Aussie to join Cameron on our team next year,” said Drew. “Ryan, like our other signees during this period, comes from a very athletic family, as both his mother and his father played for the Australian national team. He is a very excellent 3-point shooter, but can also put the ball on the floor, rebound and play good defense. Ryan really brings a complete game with him to the United States.”
Broekhoff joins previous commits Chris Halvorsen, Matt Kenney, and Tommy Kurth as incoming freshmen for the 2009-2010 campaign.

Raiders Sign Two
November 17, 2008
DAYTON - Wright State head men's basketball coach Brad Brownell announced the signing of two high school seniors to attend WSU and play for the Raiders next year. Tyler Koch, a senior from Winchester (IN) Community High School, and Darian Cartharn, a senior at Canal Winchester (OH) High School, have signed national letters of intent with Wright State.
"We're excited about the addition of Tyler and Darian to our family. They are both talented players who come from very successful programs," Brownell said. "Tyler has had a terrific high school career, leading his team to two straight state championship games. I think he is an outstanding scorer who has great size and should become a very good wing in the Horizon League. Darian is a late bloomer who we feel will really
have an outstanding senior year. He is an exceptionally strong and good athlete with the versatility to play both guard positions."
Koch (pronounced COOK), a 6-4, 190-pound guard, averaged 22.5 points per game as a junior for the Golden Falcons under head coach Chip Mehaffey. Winchester appeared in the last two 2A state Championship Games, including last year when they finished with a 23-4 overall record. Koch was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and AP-All State first teams in 2008-the only junior to receive such an honor. The
two-time Tri-Eastern Conference Player of the Year holds the state record for most points in a 2A State Championship Game with 37.
Cartharn, a 6-0, 180-pound point guard, averaged 10 points, four rebounds and two assists per game as a junior for Canal Winchester last year while playing with current Ohio State freshman B.J. Mullins. The Indians went 21-3 and advanced to the regional semifinals under head coach Kent Riggs. Cartharn had a career-high 21 points against Teays Valley and 20 points against Newark last year.

Crusaders wrap up Class
By Mark Lazeruson
November 17, 2008
This just in from the VU sports information department: Brandon Wood, a transfer from Southern Illinois, has officially signed his letter of intent. Since Wood is at Highland Community College in Illinois instead of home with his parents in Kokomo, it took his fax a little longer to get to Valparaiso.
So that completes VU's freshman class for next season, with all five scholarships doled out (unless, of course, there's another Bouchie or Haanpaa incident down the road).
So if you thought this season was filled with new faces, wait till next year. Six players are slated to make their debuts, and with no seniors next year, all could see significant playing time.
Cory Johnson, 6-7, 225-pound forward out of Duluth, Minn., via Iowa State
Matt Kenney, 6-3, 190-pound guard out of Mooresville
Tommy Kurth, 6-1, 175-pound guard out of Penn
Chris Halvorsen, 6-8, 205-pound forward out of Minneapolis
Ryan Broekhoff, 6-6, 180-pound swingman out of Australia
Brandon Wood, 6-3, 185-pound guard out of Kokomo via Southern Illinois and Highland CC

Detroit’s McCallum Signs Three Talented Hoops Recruits
11/19/2008 2:23:18 PM
New Detroit Titans basketball coach Ray McCallum and his staff scoured the countryside for talent this summer and fall and ended up making a significant upgrade in their roster with today’s announcement of the signing of three new players for next season.
On their way to Titan Territory are an incoming freshman and a pair of junior college transfers:
• Curtis Eatmon, a 6-4, 180-pound guard (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) who is transferring from Citrus (CA) College
• John Hoskins, a 6-9, 205-pound forward (Warren, MI/Conner Creek Academy East)
• Lamar Lee, a 6-0, 170-pound guard (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) who is transferring from Highland (IL) Community College
“This is a recruiting class that gives us some more talent on the perimeter. We’ve got some guys with shooting ability,” coach McCallum said. “I think our coaching staff – Carlos Briggs, Jay Smith and Derek Thomas – did an outstanding job putting this recruiting class together. They did an excellent job identifying players who bring what we need.”
Eatmon began his career at Utah, playing 29 games for the Utes during the 2006-07 season. He started three games that year, posting a one-game high of 11 points against New Mexico, then sat out last season before enrolling at Citrus College for his sophomore basketball campaign. Citrus won the California state championship last season under head coach Rick Croy and is the pre-season favorite for 2008-09.
As a senior in high school, Eatmon was a first-team All-CIF-Southern Section and Baseline League MVP at Los Osos High. He led his team to the CIF quarter-finals, a league championship and a 25-5 record in 2005-06. He averaged 15 points, two rebounds and eight assists per game as a senior, and was listed among USA Today's Top 100 players in the 2006 recruiting class.
Lee is in his first season at Highland CC after playing last winter at Indiana State. He saw action in 18 games for the Sycamores and registered an outstanding 2.8-to-1 assist-turnover ratio as a point guard.
Lee was a first-team All-Area selection as a junior at McCutcheon High School in Lafayette after averaging 15 points, three rebounds and three assists a game. He was a three-time all-conference choice despite not playing as a senior after transferring to Jefferson High.
“The two guards, Curtis and Lamar, have experience. I like the fact that they have Division I experience already to bring with them as transfers,” coach McCallum said. “They’re two high-level students. They’ll fit into what we want of our players in the class room. They’re good all-around athletes who have good all-around ability. They can play a couple positions.”
Hoskins, meanwhile, comes off an outstanding junior high school season during which he averaged a
double-double – 20 points and 14 rebounds – along with four blocks per game while being coached by his father, John Hoskins Sr. He also paced Conner Creek in three-point shooting accuracy, leading the team to a 10-10 record as an independent.
The new Titan was a second-team Class D All-State selection and was also picked third-team All-Macomb County (all classes). His father was a member of Oak Park’s Class B State Championship team in 1984.
“With his talent and with his skill level, we’re excited to have John Hoskins come aboard. He’s a good student as well,” coach McCallum said. “I like the fact that he’s a local Detroit kid. He’s one of the more talented players in the city and not only that, but he’s one of the more talented big men in the state.”

Hamga to Valparaiso
The future keeps getting brighter for the Valparaiso men’s basketball team. Beas Hamga informed the Crusader coaching staff on Saturday that he picked Valparaiso over South Carolina, Mississippi and Rutgers after deciding to transfer from UNLV last month.
The Cameroon native was ranked the No. 5 center in the country in 2007 by Rivals.com and was a five-star recruit. Hamga sat out his first year at UNLV because of elgibility concerns regarding his freshman year of high school and then decided to leave the Runnin’ Rebels after just five games this season.
Hamga will be eligible to play beginning with the second semester next season.
“I really like the coaching staff and I feel comfortable with them,” Hamga said. “I like the chance to come in and play right away.”
Hamga went to several different high schools in the United States, including Cornerstone Christian in San Antonio with former VU star Samuel Haanpaa. His last high school was Decatur Christian in Illinois where he played for coach Alan Huss. Huss is now the high school coach at Culver Academy. While at Decatur Christian, Hamga played AAU with Indiana Elite, which is coached by his guardian, Mark Adams. Teammates with Indiana Elite included Valparaiso freshman Logan Jones and Chesterton graduate Zack Novak.
Hamga was on Valparaiso’s campus on Tuesday before heading to Rutgers on Wednesday to see the Scarlet Knights host Marquette. Hamga had to make his decision quickly in order to enroll in classes so he could be eligible for the spring semester in 2010. Valparaiso started classes last Wednesday.
“I just wish that I could play right away,” Hamga said. “There’s nothing I can do, I just need to start getting ready.”
As a senior in high school, Hamga averaged 13.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocks per game at Decatur Christian. He has a wingspan of 7-feet, 5-inches and a standing reach of 9-feet, 6-inches. — Paul Oren

All-Navy hoops star commits to WSU
Staff Report
Friday, February 13, 2009
Paul Darkwa, a 6-foot-7 All-Navy basketball player originally from Ghana, has given Wright State a verbal commitment for next season.
Darkwa, whose family moved to New Jersey, played high school basketball in Los Angeles at Ramona High School in Riverside, then joined the Navy eight years ago. He is stationed at Key West, Fla., where he is an aviation boatswain?s mate and an airman recruit.
He was spotted on the Navy team and a friend alerted WSU, which is hoping the NCAA will clear Darkwa for four years of eligibility since he has never enrolled in college. If Darkwa signs in April as expected, he would give the Raiders a full complement of 13 scholarship players.

Tommy Eggleston Update: Commits!
One of the top uncommitted players in the Indianapolis is off the board. P-Hoops caught wind over the past few days that Heritage Christian senior 6'5 guard Tommy Eggleston was nearing a decision about his college future. Last night, I received a text message from Tommy about his decision, and this morning I was able to interview the standout player. Here's the transcript of the interview:
P-Hoops: Is it true you have made a college choice? If so, who is it, and what are the reasons behind your choice?
Tommy Eggleston: Yes. I just picked University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee because of their great young coaching staff and the competitive league they're in. They get in the Tournament, and they're relatively close to home.
PH: Wow! Congrats. What was it like getting the offer from them?
TE: They offered me when I went up for a visit (during their victory over Butler), and by that time, I was almost positive I wanted to go there, so it was a great feeling to get the offer and it was somewhat of a relief.
PH: What did Coach Rob Jeter tell you about why they wanted you and how you'd help them and fit in?
TE: He said he really likes players who can do more than one thing, and liked my versatility. He said he also needed a knock-down shooter, so I hope I can help with that.
PH: Those are clearly some of your strengths. What things do you need to work on before you get to campus?
TE: I definitely need to hit the weight room hard this spring and summer. Also, my ball handling and off the ball movement and defense. I'm not nearly the player I want to be and I really think Coach Jeter can make me the best player I possibly can be.
PH: So when you called last night to commit, what did the coaches say?
TE: They just said they were real excited to have me.
PH: What personal and team goals do you have for the remainder of the season?
TE: Personally I would like to make the All-City Team. As a team, I think there's no limit on what we can do. I think if we get hot, we can make a run at State, and my goal would be to win State because I think this team can do big things.
PH: Heritage Christian is in the midst of a three game losing streak since being ranked as high as number three in 2A. What do you have to do to get a win against a tough Brebeuf team tonight?
TE: Execute. Whether it's offense or defense. We know what we have to do and we're capable. It's just a matter of going out and executing.
PH: Alright Tommy. Thanks for your time, and good luck the rest of the way.
TE: Alright, thanks!
Congratulations again to Tommy for this great achievement near the culmination of a great career as an Indiana high school basketball star. He joins another fellow Hoosier, Marion's JaRob McCallum as a future UW-M Panther. P-Hoops will be keeping an eye on this Hoosier state hoopster and all the great things the future holds for him! Good luck!

Kyle Cain Decommits From Detroit
March 13, 2009
6-6 1/2 Kyle Cain of Thornton Fractional North has decommitted from the University of Detroit-Mercy. The athletic forward reneged his commitment earlier this week.
Though he verballed in the early period, he never signed a Letter of Intent which makes him eligible to commit to whatever school he chooses without penalty.
Cain is a highly athletic forward that plays hard and has a toughness about him. He’s a mid major level forward that rebounds, blocks shots, and finishes at the rim. He is a 4-man that has the potential to slide into the 3-spot at the collegiate level.
Cain has already set a visit to UT-Martin. He is also considering SIUE, Bradley, and Illinois State among others. He has four visits left and plans to use them all. Cain is wide open to all schools.

Taylor averaged 21.1 points and 9.8 rebounds for a 20-5 Anderson team that won its first sectional title in six years.
"He pushed the ball hard with great strength and quickness," said Anderson coach Ron Hecklinski. "He's a great athlete, but an even better kid."
Taylor said he like Evansville.
"They showed they really wanted me as a person and a player," he said. "Being away from home you want a family and it really seemed like I'd fit, on and off the floor."
Taylor chose UE over Ball State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State, Texas Tech and Cincinnati.

Hun School guard commits to Huskies
Saturday, 04 April 2009
By Bill Martin
Coach Bill Coen and the Northeastern Huskies have picked up a third commitment for the freshmen class of 2009.
They have received a verbal commitment from Jonathan Lee who played this season in the post graduate program at the Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey.
Originally from Flint Michigan, Jon committed to Montana State University coming out of high school, but Montana State lost a scholarship and Jon was the odd man out.
Things seemed to have worked out for the best though, as Jon thrived at the Hun School and garnered offers from quite a few Division-I schools, before ultimately deciding on NU.
We had a chance to contact Jon to learn more about his recruitment and find out why he chose to continue his career at Northeastern.
Jon sounded very excited to be headed to NU as he gave us a slew of reasons why he chose to play for the Huskies.
Here is what he had to say about his commitment.
“I committed because I liked the coaches and the team is a contender to go to the tournament every year in the CAA. It can mean instant playing time because they need a playmaker.”
They have my field of study which is architecture and the guys are cool, we clicked to the point that I felt like I was already there.
Oh and how could I forget, it's right in the middle of downtown Boston. I really didn't want to go back to Michigan for school and I have really gotten used to the East coast.”
When we asked him about what schools he chose Northeastern over, this is what he had to say.
“I had offers from Toledo, Cornell, Brown, Holy Cross, Fairfield and New Hampshire. I could of waited longer because schools like Wright State, Lehigh, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan were trying to jump in on my recruitment, but I wanted to get the process over with and go where I was wanted.”

Titans Add Four-Star Recruit Calliste
4/15/2009
Head coach Ray McCallum continues to make headway as he retools the UDM men’s basketball program with the announcement that Jason Calliste has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Titans.
“We are excited to get a player of his caliber,” said McCallum. “He is a highly-regarded player who can play both guard positions. He has a real good understanding of the game and, while he can shoot and he can score, he can also make everybody around him better.”
Calliste comes to Detroit after attending Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, NC. He averaged 24 points and 11 assists per game for the Fighting Pharoahs, leading the team to a 26-7 mark and a No. 6 ranking in the state. During his final prep season, Calliste squared off against John Wall, one of the top recruits in the nation, and ended the contest with 21 points and seven assists.
A native of Scarborough, ON, Calliste is currently tabbed a four-star recruit by rivals.com as well as the No. 86 overall and 20th-ranked guard in the country. He played his AAU ball for Grassroots Canada and was named the MVP of the 2008 Adidas Super 64 Tournament in Las Vegas after leading the team to the tournament championship. He scored 29 points in the title game lifting his team to become the first Canadian travel ball program to win a major summer AAU title.
“He played against some great competition last year and in AAU and had great success,” said McCallum. “He could have gone to a lot of other programs so it definitely makes a statement that he chose us. He likes the direction of the program and the kids that we have here so we are very excited to get him in a Titan uniform.”
Calliste joins junior college transfer guards Curtis Eatmon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) and Lamar Lee (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) and local standout forward John Hoskins (Warren, MI/Conner Creek Academy East), who signed with UDM during the early signing period.

Men's Basketball Signs Warren Harding Standout Sheldon Brogdon
Youngstown, Ohio -- Head Coach Jerry Slocum announced that Sheldon Brogdon, a Division I Third-Team All-Ohio selection in 2008, signed a National Letter of Intent during the late signing period to join the Youngstown State University men’s basketball program.
Brogdon, a 6-foot, 170-pound guard from Warren G. Harding High School, averaged 18.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, two assists and two steals per game as a senior.
Slocum said that Brogdon is a versatile player and is pleased that an outstanding local product decided to sign with YSU.
“We are excited to have one of the best local-area players sign with us and stay home and play in the Horizon League, which is a very tough league,” Slocum said. “Sheldon has the athleticism to play multiple positions.
“He shoots the ball well and has the quickness to be a good defensive player.”
Since the consolidation of Warren G. Harding and Warren Western Reserve High Schools in 1990, Brogdon is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,003 career points. He is also the school’s all-time leader with 112 3-pointers made and ranks second with 376 career field goals made.
As a junior, Brogdon averaged 21 points, three assists and three rebounds per game, and led his squad to a 23-2 record and an appearance in the Division I Regional Final.
He was also named First-Team All-Northeastern Ohio and was a All-Steel Valley Conference First-Team selection.
“Youngstown State is a great fit for me,” Brodgon said. “It is close to home and I liked the way they play. I think I can help them and they can help me become a better player.
“YSU plays freely and together,” Brogdon said. “The coaching staff was also a big factor in my decision and being close to my family was important.”
Slocum added that Brogdon comes from an outstanding and well-coached high school program.
“I have great respect for Coach Arnold and the Warren Harding basketball program,” Slocum said. “They do a tremendous job, not only with the way they coach on the court, but also the way they care about their student-athletes off the floor.”
Brogdon joins two-time All-Ohio Third-Team selection Lamar McKnight (Bedford St. Peter Chanel H.S.) in the 2009-10 recruiting class.

Loyola Announces Signing Of Pair Of Guards
April 15, 2009
CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago men's basketball head coach Jim Whitesell announced the signing today of a pair of guards to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 season. Terrance Hill (Kansas City, Mo./Hogan Prep/Coffeyville Community College) and Charles Winborne (Bossier, La./Loyola Prep) join the Ramblers' incoming class, which also features forward Ben Averkamp (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) and guard Gabe Kindred (Oakland, Calif./Worcester Academy), who signed during the NCAA early signing period in November.
A 6-foot-4 guard, who will have two years of eligibility at Loyola, Hill spent the last two seasons at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas and in 2008-09 averaged 11.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game to help Coffeyville to a 24-8 overall record. He shot 42 percent (118 for 281) from the field, including 43 percent (46 for 108) from three-point range and 76 percent (70 for 92) from the foul line last season en route to First Team NJCAA Division I All-Region VI and Second Team All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College recognition.
"We like Terrance's versatility and toughness," Whitesell said. "He is a good three-point shooter and has good feet and will provide us with length on the perimeter. Coming from a perennial winning program like Coffeyville, Terrance also will provide us with a more-experienced and mature player in our incoming class."
Winborne finished his career at Loyola Prep as one of the most accomplished and prolific scorers in Louisiana and national history. The 6-foot-1 guard is one of only 67 players nationally to have ever scored 3,000 or more points in a career, joining NBA greats like Bill Bradley, Tom McMillian, Mike Bibby and Robert Parish.
As a senior, Winborne averaged 27.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 2.8 apg, while shooting 52 percent (324 for 615) from the field and earned first team all-state honors in addition to finishing as the runner-up for player of the year in Louisiana Class 2A. He scored in double digits in all but one game in 2008-09, topping the 40-point plateau on six occasions. As a junior, the high-scoring Winborne was tabbed Class 2A Player of the Year.
"Charles is a big-time scorer, who will come to Loyola as a combo guard," Whitesell said. "He is very athletic, quick and explosive. We had a need for a player who could put the ball in the basket and Charles certainly has that ability."
Hill and Winborne join the Ramblers' recruiting class which features Averkamp and Kindred, who signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period in November. Averkamp was a unanimous Division I Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State Team selection after averaging 18.9 ppg and 12.0 rpg, while Kindred was hailed as team most valuable player after putting up 12 ppg, 3 rpg, 4 apg and 2 spg.
Loyola won 14 games in 2008-09, including a victory at No. 15 Butler in late February, and its first victory over a current member of the Southeastern Conference since 1964.

Viking Basketball Adds Two For 2009-10
April 16, 2009
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State bolstered its lineup for the 2009-10 campaign with the signing of two junior college student-athletes to national letters of intent to attend CSU and play basketball beginning this fall. CSU head coach Gary Waters made the announcement on Thursday (April 16).
Signing with the Vikings are Lance James (Lithonia Springs, GA/Aiken Tech) and Jared Cunningham (Oregon City, OR/Arkansas-Fort Smith). Both will be juniors next season and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The duo will join guard Anthony Wells (Shaker Heights, OH) and forward Kevin Anderson (Irving, TX/Southern Idaho JC) who signed with the program during the fall.
"The addition of both Lance and Jared to the Viking basketball family will help us to offset the losses caused by the graduation of our five seniors," Waters said. "They will allow us to play the kind of pressure defensive basketball that I have been longing to play here but only used in spots because of our limited depth."
James, a 5-11, 205-pound point guard, earned third team All-America honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association this past season after ranking seventh nationally in scoring with 23.4 points a game at Aiken Tech. He was also fifth in the nation in steals (3.3) and 16th in both three-point field goal percentage (61-125, .488) and assists (6.1). He was also second on the team averaging 6.1 rebounds a game.
A New Jersey All-Group I second team selection after averaging 17.9 points and 9.2 assists per game as a high school senior, he led the LEAP Academy to a 25-4 record. He originally signed with Albany out of high school but left after one semester.
"Lance will provide some immediate support at point guard, a position where we have a strong need because of the departure of Cedric Jackson," Waters said. "His perimeter scoring will enhance our offense and he also excels as a leader on the floor. He will be a good fit for our style of play."
Cunningham, a 6-9, 225-pound power forward, was a two-year starter at Arkansas-Fort Smith, helping the team to a 51-13 record in two seasons, including a 28-4 mark as a freshman in 2007-08. He averaged 10.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in his two seasons, shooting .509 from the field (216-424), .387 from three-point (65-168) and .798 from the line (83-104).
Ranked as the fourth-best player in Oregon by rivals.com as a senior at Oregon City High, he averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds a game to earn a nomination for McDonald's All-America honors.
"Jared's ability to shoot the three-ball, defend the paint and rebound will help us immediately to fill the loss of our four senior post players," Waters said. "He has the size and mobility to be a solid defender, rebounder and scorer for us."
The Vikings, who went 26-11, won the Horizon League Tournament Championship and defeated Wake Forest in the opening round of the NCAA Championship, will return two starters and seven lettermen for the 2009-10 season

WSU inks Navy man
By Marc Katz
Tuesday, April 21, 2009
FAIRBORN — Wright State has signed exotic basketball players before, maybe none quite as exotic as Paul Darkwa, a 6-foot-7, 26-year-old Navy veteran from Ghana who has lived in the United States since he was 9, first in New Jersey, then Southern California, where he went to Ramona High School in Riverside, suburban Los
Angeles.
On Monday, April 20, WSU coach Brad Brownell said he received Darkwa’s letter of intent and was happy to do so even though he has never seen Darkwa play
and isn’t quite certain of the 230-pounder’s eligibility.
“Our people tell us he should be eligible for four years,” Brownell said, “although he was not a qualifier out of high school. We’re not anticipating any problems, but we’ll have to figure it out with the NCAA.”
Brownell did have a report from Francis Ebong, WSU assistant coach Victor Ebong’s brother, who played with Darkwa in the Navy. When Darkwa visited campus last winter, Brownell liked what he saw.
“He’s a big, strong dude,” Brownell said. “It’s hard to get guys that big.”
Darkwa was thinking of college when Francis Ebong encouraged him. “I’ve been in the Navy almost eight years. I found out you need to be educated, no matter what you’re doing.”
He said he moved with his family to the U.S. for opportunities in education, lifestyle and business, and after two years in New Jersey, the family moved to Southern California.
After high school, Darkwa enlisted in the Navy.
“I was young back then,” said Darkwa, who took the ACT test for the first time only recently. “I had no sense of direction.”
He also grew from 6-foot-1 to 6-7.
“I’m beyond excited, I’m just thrilled,” said Darkwa. “They’re a winning program. Hopefully I can come in there and we can all win some more.”

Big man to join Raiders
By Marc Katz
Monday, April 20, 2009
FAIRBORN — When you’re scouring the world for talent, sometimes the talent finds you.
A couple years ago, Paul Darkwa was playing basketball for the All-Navy team and thinking of ending his Naval commitment and going to college.
Monday, he signed with Wright State to play basketball.
Good for Darkwa, good for Wright State.
Darkwa, who was in the Navy nearly eight years after finishing high school in Riverside, Calif., is a Ghana native who arrived in the U.S. with his family when he was nine years old, 17 years ago.
His family moved here, he said, for opportunities not found in Ghana, and soon moved from New Jersey to Southern California.
He was a 6-foot-1 guard in high school, but after enrolling in the Navy with a buddy because he thought college was too tough and expensive, he discovered an education was something desirable and that he was growing taller than his buddy.
“My growth spurt came late,” said Darkwa, who expects to be in town later this summer to enroll in school and play pickup games with the Raiders.
He is now 6-foot-7, 230 pounds and coach Brad Brownell said he could have a scholarship even though Brownell never saw him play.
The reason was Francis Ebong, an Annapolis grad who played on the All-Navy team with Darkwa and is also the brother of WSU assistant coach Victor Ebong. When Darkwa advised Francis he wanted to go to college, Francis knew who to call.
There is still some paperwork to do as the NCAA must decide if Darkwa, who has never been to college, has immediate and four-year eligibility. Apparently, he did not take an ACT exam in high school (he did take it recently), but Brownell feels confident he will pass all the NCAA requirements.
Darkwa will be a much-needed big man on the WSU roster, joining 6-9 Ronnie Thomas, 6-8 Cooper Land and 6-7 Cory Cooperwood. Actually, Cooperwood is closer to 6-5 and Land is more of an outside player than inside.
That leaves one spot on the WSU roster with the loss of Kyle Pressley, who unexpectedly left the team with two regular-season games to go last season.

Men's basketball: UWGB lands 6-8 Ohio forward
By Rob Demovsky
April 22, 2009
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball team finally has a local player — sort of.
The Phoenix’s latest recruit, junior college transfer Greg LeSage, has never lived in Green Bay, but his family has. His father, Randy, was born and raised in Green Bay and attended Green Bay East high school before leaving for a 24-year career in the military. In 2006, Randy moved back to Green Bay, where he runs a painting business and where his seven brothers and sisters live.
The 6-foot-8, 225-pound LeSage spent the last two years at Columbus (Ohio) State Community College, where he averaged 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season for a team that finished 28-4. He will have two years of eligibility remaining in the fall.
“I’ve been coming up to Green Bay every summer since I was about five years old,” LeSage said. “We’ve got a bunch of family up there, so it’s little bit like home.”
With a dearth of local Division I talent, the Phoenix hasn’t signed a player with Green Bay ties in nearly a decade.
LeSage is the sixth player to sign with the Phoenix in this class, joining high school seniors Seth Evans of Seneca, Ill., Clayton Heuer of Wisconsin Rapids, Rian Pearson of Raytown, Mo., Matt Smith of Whitewright, Texas and Troy Snyder of Bolingbrook, Ill.
The signing of LeSage was expected to complete this class, but Phoenix coach Tod Kowalczyk said another scholarship has become available because seldom-used freshman guard Brent Eaton has decided to transfer. Eaton likely is headed to a Division II school. Kowalczyk said he hasn’t decided whether to use that scholarship for next season or save it.
UWGB first became aware of LeSage when a third party emailed Kowalczyk. That’s nothing new. Kowalczyk estimated he gets five to 10 emails a day from parents or coaches trying to drum up interest.
“This one caught my eye,” Kowalczyk said. “His dad was from Green Bay and lives in Green Bay. He’s a 6-8 post player and a good student. We followed up and got some tape and liked what we saw, so we went down and saw him play in the national tournament.”
LeSage is expected to see some immediate playing time next season.
“He’s a physical presence inside and a very athletic kid for his size,” Kowalczyk said. “He can play above the rim, and he’s got a good feel for how to play. He’s got good hands and can pass it. He understands angles and how to seal in the post but also can step out and make a 15-foot shot. Defensively, he has some things he needs to work on, but he can come in and help us right away.”
LeSage visited UWGB last weekend and said he picked the Phoenix over fellow Horizon League schools Cleveland State, Illinois-Chicago and Youngstown State along with Central Michigan, The Citadel, Long Island, Marshall, Oral Roberts and St. Bonaventure.
LeSage grew up in Elizabethtown, Ky., near where his father was stationed at Fort Knox, and first enrolled at Georgetown (Ky.) College. While redshirting as a freshman at the Division II school, he struggled in school and then left to enroll at Columbus State.

WMU men's basketball: Pokley gets the call, wraps up '09 class
by Graham Couch | Kalamazoo Gazette
Saturday April 25, 2009
KALAMAZOO -- When his cell phone rang Friday night, Brandon Pokley didn't figure it would be the Western Michigan University men's basketball coaches.
They weren't suppose to call until Monday.
That's when they said they'd make up their mind about him -- whether they wanted him, whether they'd offer him their final scholarship and the Division I free ride he so coveted.
But, ahead of schedule, Broncos assistant coach Rick Carter was on the other end.
"Coach Carter put coach Hawkins on the phone and he said they were going to offer the scholarship to me," Pokley said Saturday. "I was pretty excited, my family was pretty excited, so were my (high school) coaches.
"I was really hoping Western would decide to offer me because it's where I really wanted to go and I wanted all along to play Division I."
Until late March, the Clarkston High School star thought he might be headed to a junior college. No one, Division I or II, had deemed him worthy of free room and board.
Both of Pokley's parents were laid off from manufacturing jobs in October. Paying his own way wasn't an option.
"I stayed pretty optimistic at first," said Pokley, a 6-foot-4 wing. "I was hoping for a scholarship. I knew it would definitely help the situation. I tried not to let it get to me too much. I just went and played and tried not to think about it every night."
After scoring 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting (including 4-for-6 3-pointers) in Clarkston's loss to Kalamazoo Central in the Class A state semifinals, Pokley had done enough.
Northwood and Ferris State, both Division II programs, offered scholarships and WMU took notice. Wright State and Detroit were also somewhat interested, though Pokley said he would have already committed to Northwood if the Broncos coaches hadn't asked him to hold off.
"For a kid to have such a great senior year under that pressure -- every night he thought he had to perform to get on the radar of college coaches," said Eric Chambers, a 15-year assistant coach at Clarkston. "Every night, he thought, 'If I shoot bad, it could cost me a scholarship.'"
Pokley, who averaged 21 points and five rebounds as a senior for 24-2 Clarkston, fills WMU's final available scholarship for 2009, joining guards David Brown (Rockton, Ill.) and Austin Harper (Grand Haven), forward Nate Hutcheson (Marion, Iowa), and center Shayne Whittington (Lawrence).
The other four all signed in November. An additional scholarship became available when Juston Hairston left the program midseason.
"In two years, he's probably only had one bad shooting game," Chambers said of Pokley. "He would have averaged more (points) but we blew out a lot of teams.
"I knew he'd be good. I didn't know he'd be this good. He exceeded my expectations the last couple years."
The knock on Pokley is a lack of strength and athleticism. Shooting is not a problem -- he made 40 percent of 3-point tries last season. The question is, can he get that shot off?
Another reason Pokley remained available was his decision not to play with a high-profile AAU team, instead staying with the friends he'd played with since elementary school.
"I definitely need to get bigger and faster, because that's the name of the game at the higher levels -- bigger, faster, stronger," Pokley said.
"The coaches said they liked how I shot the ball and how hard I worked and that I came from a program built on hard work. I'm fundamentally sound. I'll do everything I can to become the best player I can be and they know that."

Loyola Adds Shaun Adams To Men's Basketball Program For 2009-10
April 27, 2009
CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago men's basketball team has signed Shaun Adams to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Jim Whitesell announced today. A 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward from Liberty High School in Liberty, Mo., Adams joins a Loyola class that already includes guards Gabe Kindred, Terrance Hill and Charles Winborne and forward Ben Averkamp.
As a senior at Liberty High School last season, Adams averaged 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.4 blocks per game and earned first team all-state, all-district and Suburban Big Seven Conference Most Valuable Player accolades, while helping his club to a 23-6 record and the Missouri Class 5 quarterfinals. The athletic forward, who also plays baseball, finished his career as Liberty High's career scoring leader with 1,239 points, and also is the standard holder for career assists and blocked shots.
During his time on the varsity squad at Liberty, Adams helped the Blue Jays to a 76-32 record, three conference championships and a pair of district titles.
"Shaun is a skilled forward who can give us a different dimension than what we've had here," Whitesell said. "He is an exceptional all-around athlete, is a good passer, a strong rebounder and is very athletic. Shaun has a very bright future and we are thrilled to add him to what we feel is a strong recruiting class."
Loyola welcomes back 10 players and adds five newcomers to a group that won 14 contests in 2008-09.

Frankfort star will walk on at Purdue
By JEFF WASHBURN
April 28, 2009
When a basketball player's father and uncles attended a university which has offered a preferred walk-on opportunity, it's difficult to say no.
So when Frankfort's 6-foot-6 senior forward Stevie Loveless and his parents met with Purdue coach Matt Painter on Monday in Mackey Arena, Painter essentially had Loveless at hello.
"My only real concern and question for coach Painter was, 'Can I come in this summer and work with the strength and conditioning coach?' " Loveless said Monday night.
"When he said I could start June 15, that's what I wanted to hear. Right now, I'm only 195 pounds, so that's why it was important to me to get a head start at getting stronger."
Loveless, a Journal & Courier Big School First Team All-Area selection, was being recruited by Division I schools North Dakota State, Wright State, IPFW and Loyola (Chicago). He had scholarship offers from Division II schools Florida Southern, Lewis and Lynn (Miami). NAIA schools Indiana Wesleyan, St. Francis and McKendree (St. Louis) also extended offers.
"But I've grown up in a Purdue environment with my dad and his brothers all being Purdue guys," Loveless said.
"They're definitely going to be a Top 10 next season, so just being around all those talented guys will make me better. Plus, I like that Purdue is going to be challenging academically."
Loveless plans to major in finance. He will graduate from Frankfort with a 3.3 grade-point average. He scored 1,500 on his SAT.
"I've been thinking about this decision every day since our season ended," Loveless said. "I've made the right decision."
Loveless averaged 23.2 points, 11.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists this season. He joins Central Catholic's Dru Anthrop as preferred walkons.
Frankfort coach Jason Good believes Loveless has the skill to play in the Big Ten Conference, but for now, lacks the raw strength to play at that level.
"This is a great opportunity for him to play in a program of Purdue's caliber," Good said. "Right away, he will help make them better in practice.
"He is a very skilled, all-around player who can shoot, rebound and pass. But before he can hope to get the floor for them, Stevie has to improve his strength. I think he made a good decision."

Stewart is a long, high-flying guard with an improving perimeter game. He was slowed by broken legs his freshman and sophomore years but had phenominal junior and senior seasons. He led Clarenceville his senior year by averaging 27.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. His senior year was highlighted by a career high 47-point output vs. Lutheran Northwest. He accepted an offer to play for Eastern Michigan last spring but rescinded a few months later. It's official: Beas Hamga is transferring
By Mark Lazeruson May 13, 2009
The Beas Hamga Era at Valparaiso is over. Of course, it never really began.
Hamga, the 7-foot UNLV transfer and five-star recruit, told Homer Drew on Wednesday that he's looking to continue his nomadic career elsewhere, likely at a junior college. Drew said the two have been talking about it for weeks now, so it's not a surpise and the coaching staff has been working hard on the recruiting trail to replace him.
Hamga is the third player (so far) to leave the team this year, following Logan Jones and Benjamin Fumey.
I'll update more in a bit, and for the full story and my thoughts on the current state of VU basketball, check out Thursday's Post-Tribune.

Samuels Makes Pick
May 15th, 2009
Windsor High School’s Steven Samuels has made a decision and he’s going with the school that has been on him the hardest since day one.
St. Peter’s College received a commitment from the senior guard on Thursday, ending the recruitment of one of the best left available players in New England.
While Samuels recruitment has had many twists and turns over the course of his senior year, St. Peter’s presence has been a constant. In fact, Peacock’s assistant coach Marlon Guild has been recruiting Samuels hard since he first joined the SPC staff in August.
While Guild no doubt had the inside track after having coached Samuels last spring with the Connecticut Basketball Club, the fact that the first year assistant coach was still able to get his man with the likes of Wright State, VCU, Penn State, and Western Michigan all expressing interest is a noteworthy accomplishment.
Samuels ends his career at Windsor having accomplished virtually everything he possibly could have hoped for. Individually, he’s scored over 1000 points, been named to all-conference and all-state teams, and even claimed the Hartford Courant player of the year award. Perhaps more importantly, he helped Windsor and head coach Ken Smith to the Class LL State Championship in his final season as a Warrior.
Samuels has all the talent to step right in and make an immediate impact at St. Peter’s next year. He’s absolutely tremendous in the open floor with the ability to make plays on both ends of the ball; using his length and quickness to force turnovers and creating shots for himself and others going to the rim like few others can.
One of Samuels’ best individual performances came almost one year ago to the day, when he traveled to the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions with his Connecticut Basketball Club team. The New England Recruiting Report was in the stands at Cameron Indoor to watch Samuels go blow for blow with Kenny Boynton, one of the top ranked guards in the country who is headed to the University of Florida next year.
When the final buzzer went off Boynton’s Team Breakdown scored a slim victory, but the individual battle between Boynton and Samuels couldn’t have been closer.
It was obvious on that day that if Samuels were to go to the right level and play in the right system then he would have a chance to have a great college career.
Now it looks as if that is well on its way to becoming reality.

Haskins out, 6-7 "beast" Milos Milosevic in
By Mark Lazeruson May 20, 2009
Valparaiso's roster overhaul continues, as sophomore-to-be De'Andre Haskins is leaving the program, and 6-7, 235-pound power forward Milos Milosevic has signed a national letter of intent.
First, Haskins. His departure -- which follows that of Logan Jones, Benjamin Fumey and Beas Hamga -- is not terribly surprising, but it is significant. The dynamic shooting guard out of LaPorte's LaLumiere prep school averaged 6.2 points per game last season, but came on late in the year, reaching double-digits in three of the last four games. VU coach Homer Drew said Haskins wanted to move closer to his Southern California home, and already has offers from several junior colleges and interest from some Division I schools. As with the transfers of Jones and Hamga, Drew said it was about "finding a better fit."
"He's really improved and we really enjoyed having him," Drew said. "We saw great improvement from him on and off the floor. But this will be much better for DeAndre."
Now, as for the incoming Milosevic. The Montenegro native is "built like an ox," according to VU assistant Chris Sparks. While he was recruited solely based on film, Drew said he's "thicker" than even Cory Johnson and Fumey. He's got that basketball pedigree that Drew loves, too: Milosevic's dad, Nebojsa, was 6-9 and played nearly two decades of pro ball in Europe. Milosevic's oldest brother is 7-0 and plays in Germany, and the middle brother, Nemanja, is a 6-8 center at Western Kentucky.
Milos has spent the past two years in the United States, averaging 25 points and 12 rebounds in his one year at Oakmont High School near Sacramento, then missing most of last season at Yuba College after rupturing his appendix. Even though he played only 18 games, he was second-team all-conference, averaging about 9.5 points and 7 rebounds per game, according to his coach, Doug Cornelius. Milosevic will have three years of eligibility, starting immediately.
"He's a beast, he's an absolute beast," said Yuba coach Doug Cornelius. "He's going to be a manchild for Valpo. He's 6-7, 240 pounds of solid muscle. He's probably 6.5 or 7 percent body fat at that weight. He's just a manchild. Big, broad shoulders, tough as nails, real physical -- but what I love about him is he's got a very European style to his game; he can shoot the 3, he can pass, he can handle a little bit. But when he gets on the block, he'll punch you in the mouth to get to the basket. So he plays that European style, but he's got a very American physicality to him."
And if you're worried that Milosevic is yet another recruit that doesn't "fit" at Valparaiso (a fair concern these days), well, Drew said he's an electrical engineering major. Not exactly underwater basket-weaving. And he had a 4.0 GPA at Yuba this past season.
"When he's on the basketball court, he's so overly competitive and physical and intense, but off the court, he's one of the best kids you can ever be around," Cornelius said. "I'm gonna be devastated when he leaves. He's a 4.0 student, he's very responsible -- just a great kid."
Haskins' departure means VU still has one open scholarship, but Drew said he hopes to hang on to it in case there's a late transfer or other opportunity.

Fordham University Signs Three to Men's Basketball Letters of Intent for 2009-10
June 17, 2009
Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University men's basketball head coach Dereck Whittenburg announced the signing of Brennen Melvin (Ft. Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot), Danny Thompson (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain /Canarias Basketball Academy) and Fahro Alihodzic (Leicester, England/Canarias Basketball Academy) to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 season. They join Lance Brown (Teaneck, N.J./Paterson Catholic), Chris Gaston (Newark, N.J./St. Anthony's (New Hampton Prep) and Brian Freeman (Potomac, Va./Potomac School) who signed with the Rams during the early signing period in November.
Melvin, a 6'5", 195-pound guard, received Mr. Basketball honors by the Southwest Florida Association of Basketball Coaches, helping Bishop Verot to its first State Final Four appearance. He averaged 16.5 ppg, second best on the team, and led the team in rebounding (9.5), assists (4.5) and three-pointers made (51). Melvin shot 50% from the field (174-347), including 39% from behind the arc (51-131), and 75% (113-150) from the free throw stripe. He registered 12 double-doubles on the year, including a career-high 28-point effort, along with 15 rebounds, in a win over Cardinal Mooney in January.
The 2008-09 SWFLHoops.com Player of the Year in 2008-09, Melvin was also named the Ft. Myers News-Press All-Area Boys Basketball Player of the Year and the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) District 16 Player of the Year, an honor which earned Melvin an appearance in the FACA North-South All-Star Game last April in Orlando.
Under the guidance of head coach Matt Herting, Bishop Verot advanced to the Class 3A State Final Four last year, falling to defending champions Pine Crest in the semifinals to close out the year with a 23-9 record. On the season, Melvin not only was the second leading scorer for the Vikings, but he was also was called upon to guard one of the opponent's top offensive threat. Herting referred to Melvin as "the best defender he has ever coached".
As a junior in 2007-08, Melvin averaged 12.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg, earning Ft. Myers News Press All-Southwest Florida honors along with FSWA 3A All-State Honorable Mention accolades.
Melvin graduates from Bishop Verot as the school's all-time leader in assists and rebounds, and set the school single season mark for total rebounds last year. He led the Vikings to four straight district titles.
Melvin, who selected Fordham over schools such as Duquesne, Wright State, SMU, and Bucknell, is the sixth Bishop Verot basketball player in the past six years to sign with a Division I school.

WGH’s Eargle already home
By JOHN VARGO Tribune Chronicle
June 17, 2009
Youngstown State's basketball team always knew about forward Damian Eargle. The prolific Warren G. Harding standout was offered a scholarship along with teammate and forward Chris Henderson and guard Sheldon Brogdon, who did sign in April to go to YSU.
Henderson is at Vincennes (Ind.) University and finished his first season at the junior college with five points and 3.4 rebounds in 28 games.
The 6-foot-7, 200-pound Eargle, on the other hand, headed to UNC Greensboro where he was named to the Southern Conference's all-Freshman squad.
Eargle, a true freshman, started 20 of the 28 games he played this season and averaged 9.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He led the Southern Conference with 57 blocked shots. Eargle averaged 11.6 points in conference play - including a game-high 25 points against Appalachian State. According to a news release, that was the most scored by a Greensboro freshman in 18 years.
With that said, it seems Eargle would be looking forward to his sophomore year at Greensboro. The team did go 5-25 and could only improve.
Harding coach Steve Arnold said Eargle has left Greensboro and enrolled in summer classes at YSU. Eargle chose Greensboro over YSU before during his senior season with the Raiders.
Arnold said Eargle left because he was homesick.
Eargle is participating in open gyms at YSU, but has not signed a letter of intent with the Penguins. If and when Eargle does sign with YSU, he will have to sit out this coming year because of NCAA transfer rules.
Coach Jerry Slocum and his staff cannot comment on Eargle until he signs with the Penguins.
He wouldn't be the only forward on the roster. Dallas Blocker, a 6-9 forward, has one more year of eligibility and played well off the bench before leaving the team in early February with a medical condition. There's also starter Sirlester Martin and bench players Dan Boudler and Eddie D'Haiti, who redshirted last season.
As for Eargle, I'm sure most Harding fans will hope to see Brogdon get a little high-low action with himself and Eargle once again.
If Eargle signs, I'm sure YSU will make him feel right at home. All those Harding fans in the Beeghly Center stands cheering YSU, Brogdon and himself will make the former Raider forward feel like he never left the Mahoning Valley.
