With Mike Winiecki coming on board , you guys might have a basketball staff that could beat any staff in the country 4 on 4. First, thank you very much for your insight lim2day! It is very much appreciated. Losing Marty is a tough loss but you seem pretty high on Mike Winiecki so I'll trust your judgement and not get to worked up about a coaching change. Thanks again.

Brownell Hires Winiecki July 6, 2007 DAYTON - Mike Winiecki, an assistant coach at Boston University the last two seasons, has been named an assistant coach at Wright State by WSU head basketball coach Brad Brownell today. Winiecki, a standout player at the University of Richmond, was on the UNC Wilmington staff while Brownell was also an assistant under Jerry Wainwright. He also held coaching positions with the Spiders as well as Campbell University. "Mike has always impressed me with his knowledge of the game and work ethic from our days together on the UNCW staff," Brownell said. "He was a tremendous college player who has the ability to teach post play to young players. Also, his experience in recruiting the Midwest and the east coast will enhance our program. His passion for the game will make the players and staff excited to work with him." Winiecki began his coaching career in 1992 at Richmond, serving as a graduate assistant under head coach Dick Tarrant. Winiecki then played professional basketball in Portugal before returning to the coaching ranks as an assistant coach at Richmond under head coach Bill Dooley for three seasons starting in 1994-95. He served a third stint as a Spider assistant coach under Wainwright beginning in 2002-03. Prior to his most recent return to UR, Winiecki spent four seasons as an assistant at UNC Wilmington under Wainwright. He also coached two seasons at Campbell University under head coach Billy Lee. A native of Buffalo, New York, Winiecki enjoyed a stellar collegiate career for the Spiders. He was a member of UR's 1986 and 1988 NCAA Tournament teams and was an All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) selection as a senior (1988-89), averaging 17.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. A member of Richmond's 1,000-point club, he finished his career with 1,031 points and more than 500 rebounds. He was a member of the storied 1988 Richmond team that, as the 13th seed, advanced to the NCAA's "Sweet Sixteen." Along the way, the Spiders beat fourth-seeded Indiana and fifth-seeded Georgia Tech. A graduate of Monacan High School in Richmond, Virginia, Winiecki was a Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star selection. In addition, he received All-Metro and All-State honors following his senior season, averaging 23.0 points and 11.4 rebounds. Winiecki replaces Marty McGillan, who left earlier this month to accept a similar position at Winthrop. wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/070607aab.html

I think Marty and his family just wanted to get back to the NC and SS area. There is no falling out between them but a move for Marty and his family and their happiness and closeness to family. Look for Brad's first call to be to Boston U and Mike Winiecki, there are lots of coaches who would like to get on Brad's staff for when he does make another move. Mike Winiecki is a great coach and the staff would not skip a beat. I hope it works out for all parties. Thanks for giving us the scoop 3 weeks ago ilm2day.

Brownell, Winiecki reunitedBy Marc Katz Staff Writer Saturday, July 07, 2007 FAIRBORN — With two of the top three assistant staff positions changing for Wright State basketball coach Brad Brownell, there will be a learning curve to get over, but not a steep one. "We'll have to make a few adjustments," Brownell said after announcing the addition of Mike Winiecki to his staff, "but we worked together at North Carolina-Wilmington, and he has a ton of college coaching experience." Winiecki, who was an assistant at Boston University the last two seasons, takes the place of Marty McGillan, who has accepted an assistant's job at Winthrop, nearer his family in the Carolinas. Earlier, Victor Ebong was hired to take the place of Adrian Townsend, who left the program to pursue other opportunities. Ebong played for Wilmington while Brownell was an assistant coach there. Winiecki played at the University of Richmond and was an assistant with Brownell at Wilmington under coach Jerry Wainwright. Winiecki also coached at Richmond and Campbell University. He also played professional ball in Portugal. As a college player, Winiecki's teams reached the 1986 and 1988 NCAA tournaments and, in the latter year, advanced to the Sweet Sixteen as a 13 seed, beating fourth-seeded Indiana and fifth-seeded Georgia Tech. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2007/07/07/ddn070707wsubb.html

Winiecki was Boston University's recruiting coordinator the last 2 years. Below is BU's last freshman class and their stats. Based on their performance, I am pretty impressed with his ability to identify talent.
Corey Lowe (6-2, G) 14.1 points, 3.8 rebs, 2.7 assists Tyler Morris (6-1, G) 13.4 points, 3.0 rebs, 2.4 assists Carlos Strong (6-2, G) 9.5 points, 3.0 rebs, 1.1 assists Scott Brittain (6-8, F) 7.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists Valdas Sirutis (6-7, F) 2.0 points, 1.8 rebounds

I really like the addition of both Mike Winiecki and Victor Ebong. Both have played and coached in this system before so they should hit the ground running. Adrian Townsend had a big learning curve last year since he wasn't familiar with our system. Mike Winiecki and Victor Ebong are also former post players. Last year, we had 4 coaches and all 4 of them were guards. This year we have 2 former guards and 2 former posts players. This should help in the development of our big men.

Brownell Rounds Out Staff Sept. 5, 2007 Wright State head men's basketball coach Brad Brownell announced today the staff addition of Scott Woods as Director of Basketball Operations and Lucas McKay as Administrative Assistant. Woods, recently an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State University, has also held assistant coaching positions Manchester (IN) College and DePauw (IN) University as well as several high schools in Indiana. Woods graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1993 where he was named all-league as a junior and senior. In 2003, he was inducted into Rose-Hulman's Hall of Fame. "We are very fortunate to hire someone with Scott's experience in our director of basketball operations position," Brownell said. "He has held several assistant coaching positions at smaller colleges and he is excited about the opportunity at the division I level." McKay was a student assistant for Brownell's teams at UNC Wilmington before being named an assistant coach at Harrell's Christian Academy last year. He graduated from UNCW in 2006 with a degree in political science and has worked several regional and national camps and tournaments as a coach or administrator. "Lucas is a hard working and dedicated young coach who I was fortunate to have at UNC-Wilmington," Brownell said. "He is extremely organized and will help us a great deal administratively." Woods replaces Cliff Dillard who recently took the head coach position at ?? (NC) High School while McKay takes over for John Moseley, now an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State University. The Raiders advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 1993 and posted a record of 23-10. WSU will open the season November 19, hosting Coastal Carolina at the Nutter Center. wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/090507aab.html

Cliff Dillard is at Currituck HS. I have never seen a SID use a fill in the blank for a press release. Dayton is not for everyone so Brad will have to be geta better idea from guys if they are willing to tough it out and stay in Dayton to cut down on turnover. lucas Mckay will be a hard worker and do a very go job as WSU.
