Thomas sits out a gameBy Marc Katz | Wednesday, December 17, 2008 FAIRBORN — After starting seven of the first nine games, Wright State junior center Ronnie Thomas was asked to take a seat tonight following a morning examination that determined he did suffer a concussion Sunday at Wake Forest. Thomas’ spot in the lineup was taken by Cooper Land, who was to start against visiting Norfolk State. Thomas, averaging 3.8 points and 3.1 rebounds, caught an elbow to the head near the end of the first half at Wake Forest, and was briefly treated by athletic trainer Jason Franklin before going to the locker room at halftime. He seemed to be alright, but the Raiders held him out about seven minutes to start the second half before he re-entered the game. Thomas seemed fine until at Tuesday’s morning practice he said he didn’t feel well and threw up. He was held out of the rest of practice although he said he felt okay. He was checked by a team doctor Tuesday night and again this morning, when it was decided he would sit out a game. Thomas is expected to be able to play Saturday when the Raiders open the San Juan Shootout against Oral Roberts www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

Duggins back, for nowBy Marc Katz Wednesday, December 31, 2008 FAIRBORN — Vaughn Duggins walked into the Setzer Pavilion this afternoon with a smile on his face and without two pins in his surgically-repaired right ring finger. “It took about 10 minutes for them to take the pins out,” Duggins said, showing off a slightly puffy finger with a single tan flesh-colored bandage between the second and third knuckle and a tiny incision showing between the first and second knuckle. Duggins was given clearance to dribble and shoot right away, but he won’t be able to go through a full practice until maybe Friday. The Raiders have a home game with Youngstown State on Saturday, and Duggins doesn’t expect to even dress. That means next Thursday at Butler is the target date for his return — if he returns this season. There is a possibility he will take a medical redshirt and restart his junior year next season. “I guess that’s still a possibility,” Duggins said. “I can’t see it happening. I’m leaning toward not letting that happen.” While Duggins has been working hard to stay in shape by running steps and the beach at the San Juan Shootout, he admits he is not in basketball shape, and hasn’t used his shooting hand in more than four weeks. The Raiders were 0-4 with Duggins in the lineup and went to 0-6 before winning seven of their last eight games, including Tuesday night’s 71-62 victory over Cleveland State. Coach Brad Brownell said he would have to look into NCAA rules about medical redshirts, since they are taken on a case-by-case basis. If Duggins should play after the first of the year and get hurt again, it would hurt his chances of taking a redshirt season. His status may be up in the air until game time at Butler. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

Duggins' status uncertainBy Marc Katz Wednesday, December 31, 2008 FAIRBORN — A decision on whether Vaughn Duggins will restart his junior season or apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt is expected to take at least a week to make according to Wright State basketball coach Brad Brownell. Duggins said he is leaning toward coming back now and showed off his right hand, minus cast and two pins, on Wednesday, Dec. 31. Duggins broke his right ring finger in a Thanksgiving Day practice and had surgery Dec. 3. The pins were removed in a 10-minute procedure Wednesday, after which he was cleared to dribble and shoot with the hand. He is expected to return to full practice Friday, will be held out of Saturday's game with Youngstown State and could be ready to play at Butler next Thursday. "I'm leaning toward not (redshirting)," Duggins said. "The main reason is the guys have worked so hard to get back to where we are contending." Duggins played in only four games, all of which the Raiders lost on the way to an 0-6 start. They are now 7-7. "I don't know how long it is going to take him to get back into basketball shape," Brownell said. "He hasn't used that hand for nearly five weeks. We haven't thought a whole lot about it. We've been trying to win games." NCAA regulations stipulate a player must have participated in less than 30 percent of a team's games to obtain a medical redshirt. Duggins has missed 10 games, about a third of the season. In the four games he played, he averaged 11.8 points, best on the team. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2008/12/31/ddn010109spwsubb.html

I just can't see Vaughn red-shirting. I hope practice goes well for the next week.

I agree with Raider Fanatic. I really hope he doesn't red-shirt and he is able to give us solid minutes against Butler. we are going to need him.

Duggins at practiceBy Marc Katz Friday, January 2, 2009 FAIRBORN — Junior guard Vaughn Duggins did a little more at practice today on his way to recovering from a broken right ring finger. On Wednesday, Duggins had two pins removed from the finger he broke on Thanksgiving Day. He was allowed limited ball-handling and shooting on Wednesday and Thursday, and participated a little more in drills today. Duggins injured his hand after playing in four games, and there remains a possibility he will seek a medical redshirt and not play again this season. However, he said he is leaning toward playing again, although it won’t be Saturday against Youngstown State. The earliest he would be ready to play would be Thursday, at Butler. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

Duggins answer hangingBy Marc Katz Tuesday, January 6, 2009 FAIRBORN — Still looking for the definitive answer on when injured junior guard Vaughn Duggins will play again? So am I. He looked fine at practice today, admitting when he was hit on the right hand, it stung a little. “But it didn’t last long,” Duggins said. “It’s up to the coach if I play.” Well, not really. It’s up to coach Brad Brownell if Duggins is cleared to play. It’s up to Duggins and his family if he wants to play, and only if he gets a final okay from doctors. Duggins broke the ring finger on the right, shooting, hand Thanksgiving Day in practice. He had surgery the following week, had the pins removed last Wednesday and has slowly integrated himself into practices ever since. Today he said he felt fine, but the question is, will the hand stay healthy through another 16 or more games (depending on how far the Raiders advance in the Horizon League tournament). Ideally, Duggins would sit out another week. He has already missed 11 games. But Thursday, WSU’s game is at Butler, a nationally-ranked team undefeated in league play. A loss at Butler would give the Raiders three league losses and a much-diminished chance to win the regular season and secure a good spot in the league tournament seeding. A healthy Duggins would certainly help WSU’s cause. But what if he didn’t play, WSU won, then won at Valparaiso on Saturday — and Duggins came back next week, stronger, healthier and more sure of the hand? That would be great. Then again, what if WSU lost at Butler, then lost again at Valpo? Chances of WSU recovering from that would not gbe out of the question, but would be diminished. Tough questions to answer, and they won’t be answered today or probably even Wednesday. Remember, it wasn’t known right away that Duggins’ hand was broken. He played one game that way, with his fingers taped together, and scored 16 points. Two days later, an x-ray revealed the break. Broken bones heal, but on their own time. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

I would personally be shocked to not see Vaughn running the floor at the Butler game. He is an Indianapolis kid and absolutely would love to come in and hand the Dogs their first league loss. Hopefully that doesn't happen, but he's a good kid and hopefully he'll have a good year (other than the two Butler games of course).

Just heard that Vaughn will not play against Butler or Valpo. Looking more and more like a redshirt year.

Raiders this weekBy Marc Katz Sunday, January 11, 2009 FAIRBORN — What’s up with the Raiders this week? Well, an unusually light week with only one game, at Detroit on Friday at 9 p.m. Why on Friday, and so late at night? It’s an ESPNU game, moved from Saturday. If you’ve got Time Warner Cable or one of the satellite providers, you’re in. DETROIT (4-11, 0-6): First-year coach Ray McCallum is finding the Horizon League difficult, although his team is improving just when the Raiders come calling. Detroit nearly beat the last undefeated team in the league, Butler, before losing 54-50 in Indianapolis on Saturday. WRIGHT STATE (9-8, 3-3): Raiders are smack dab in the middle of the pack, but not in bad position with so many league games to play. Only Butler (5-0), Milwaukee (5-1), Green Bay (4-1) and Cleveland State (4-2) are ahead of them. Butler, Milwaukee and Green Bay have already beaten the Raiders at their homes, while Cleveland State has lost here. The schedule favors the Raiders. BIG DECISION: Vaughn Duggins will see a doctor this week to determine the status of his right hand. He broke the ring finger and had it repaired, but is still experiencing some pain. Chances are he’ll opt for a medical redshirt, but that decision doesn’t have to be made until after the season. He has already missed 13 games.www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

Individual workoutsBy Marc Katz Monday, January 12, 2009 FAIRBORN — They arrived in small groups today to work individually or in pairs with coaches on certain aspects of their games. The Wright State Raiders had the day off, sort of, at least from the hard practices. Coming off a road split by identical scores (64-48 loss at Butler, 64-48 victory at Valparaiso), Monday was a learning day. Tuesday, they will practice hard again, for Detroit, which is coming up Friday and finishes a three-game road trip. Also Tuesday, Vaughn Duggins will visit a doctor to see why Duggins still experiences pain in the supposedly healed broken right hand. www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/

Duggins still hopes to playBy Marc Katz Saturday, January 17, 2009 DETROIT — Vaughn Duggins was on the floor for warmups Friday, Jan. 16, prior to the Horizon League game with Detroit, but he wasn't in uniform. He was dressed in dark blue pants, a lavender shirt and purple-and-lavender striped tie. He also wore a pair of loafers. "Some days are good and some are bad," the Raiders' All- Horizon League junior guard said. "It's getting better. I can do more with it, but it still hurts to shoot and dribble and catch the ball. "I think I tried to do too much before the Butler game. I really wanted to play in that game, and I pushed it." He flexed his right hand, the one with the repaired broken ring finger. He broke it in practice Thanksgiving Day and had it set the following week. Four weeks later, he had two pins removed from the finger and a cast taken off. He has been day-to-day ever since. The Butler game was Jan. 8. The Raiders lost. Duggins has played in only four games, so he could apply for a medical redshirt and forget about the rest of this season, but he is holding out some hope he can come back. "I want to be there for my teammates," Duggins said. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2009/01/17/ddn011709spwsunotes.html

Gardner says wins help ease the pain By Marc Katz Sunday, January 18, 2009 DETROIT — As he sat and talked after the game, junior guard John David Gardner slipped a plastic bag of ice under his sweat pants next to his right hip. He was smiling. "Some days I don't feel as good as others," Gardner said. "As long as we're winning, it feels better." Over the last three-plus years, Gardner has gone through a series of painful situations, mostly regarding his left foot and his hip. It all kept him from playing a lot for coach Brad Brownell at North Carolina-Wilmington, and at Wright State, where he scored 17 points Friday, Jan. 16, in a 60-51 victory over Detroit. Gardner leads the Raiders in points (181, 10.1 a game), assists (60) and minutes played (530, 29.4 a game). To do that, he doesn't participate in all phases of practice during the week. "I practice when I can," Gardner said. Brownell has a deal with Gardner. He wants his player to tell him when he doesn't feel well enough to practice. "Sometimes I tell him to sit out, and any time he feels bad, he tells us," Brownell said. "He doesn't tell us very often. He's a seasoned enough player. He doesn't need to practice much." When the season began, Brownell didn't know how much he'd get to use Gardner, who didn't start the first three games, but has started every game since. He has also played 30 or more minutes in 12 of the last 13 games, including 34 against Detroit, the most of anyone on the team. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2009/01/18/ddn011809spwsunotes.html
