I always take the approach, you get what you pay for. When the economy went bad a few years back, WSU drastically cut our athletic budgets. Basketball is the only sport we spend much money on. Our other coaches are asked to do more with less. If we gave them better budgets, I think they could be more successful. Valpo $12,946,139 YSU $12,546,717 UIC $12,515,798 Detroit $11,983,882 Milwaukee $11,780,711 CSU $10,911,800 Oakland $10,382,659 Wright State $9,942,619 Green Bay $7,485,351 www.bbstate.com/info/schools-budget

Riceownz2, I care about the all-sports trophy. I think I remember Cusack saying that he'd like all of the student-athletes to experience...sorry, can't remember if he said NCAA tourney or post season play at least once. Sounds like a good objective. Not necessarily a fan at throwing money at a sport but, we need to meet such an objective with making sure a sport has what it needs to succeed. Not sure if it is still an objective but, clearly this year's standing should not be acceptable.

The thing is, Piqua Raider, the great recession affected every institution--not just Wright State. The question might be, what have others done, that Wright State has not, to continue fielding competitive teams?
When looking at the table you supplied we are in the lower quartile (borderline bottom tenth) of all Div. I athletic budgets. We're down with a lot of the small public schools and small private schools. To me, the WSU athletic budget isn't reflective of the institution as a whole.

I said not too long ago that WSU needed to step up to the plate in it's funding of Athletics. The biggest issue, in my mind, was how the former $35 Nutter Center fee got swept up when it could have gone to Athletics. We need to be at least at the $11 million level, if not the $12 million level. If it doesn't happen with this President, when will it ever happen.

The problem is none of those numbers are standardized. Every school does their accounting in different ways. Wright State has the best facilities by far in the conference. We put more of our money into building those facilities and maintaining them than any other school in the conference. That money is not reflected in our athletic budget at all. Other schools in the conference, rent their facilities. That money is reflected in their budget. YSU has a much bigger budget than us. Something like 40% of that budget goes toward football.

I agree '79. I wish #'s were standardized, but they're not. Wolf is on to something as well. It would be nice to have the former Nutter fee (at least a chunk of it) going towards athletics. I'm in the camp that athletics is a window into the university and serves as a marketing mechanism.
That said, considering a potentially higher % of WSU's athletic budget goes into athletics (not buildings, maintenance, or football) then the on-field performance is a bit disconcerting.
