I think Big D was right on with his assessment of Reggie. He never developed over his 4 years at Wright State. In most categories his stats got worse. As a freshman he averaged 8.5 points a game. As a senior that declined to 7.3 points per game. His rebounding declined from 2 a game to 1.6 per game. His TOs per game did improve but his assists per game did not. He averaged 2.1 assists as a freshman and still averaged 2.1 assists as a senior. He was our starting PG and was tied for 3rd on our team in assists per game with Yoho. Hopkins and Thomasson averaged more per game than him. His steals per game declined from 1.1 a game to 0.7. His FG and 3 point shooting percentages also decreased from his freshman year to senior year. As a freshman, Reggie and Keifer Sykes were being talked about as the 2 future stars of the HL at the PG position. Their stats were pretty similar at that time. Keifer improved every year of his 4 years at Green Bay. Reggie plateaued as a freshman. The thing that stands out to me as I watch the NCAA tournament is the size, bulk, muscle of the big men compared to WSU. And even the guards reflect that type of build. I think Duke's two starting guards were 6'4". I don't recall UW's, but that team was loaded with height. Does Donlon think he can hammer together a team with 10 guards and then get to the NCAA and stand a chance at winning? He MUST be smokng some pretty strong stuff.

Duke's starting guards are 6' and 6'1". They just happen to have big men behind them to allow them to use their quickness and pressure ball handlers.

Many of those stats, Doliboa, are a function of the system. For instance, unless BD changed his philosophy on rebounding I wouldn't expect a small point guard to be crashing the boards more his JR. and Sr. years.

I'm not in the know enough on the staff roles and background to know how good/bad this is. Seems like he was a chicago guy happy to go home and stay in the HL. Probably got a sweet deal from the new UIC coach (who probably wants to keep kids local, and wants to try and get guys from AAU programs like what Mullins' dad runs). Besides Roddy, didn't we also sign a couple kids from that AAU team (but which didn't pan out)?

Besides Roddy, didn't we also sign a couple kids from that AAU team (but which didn't pan out)? We signed 2 Illinois kids in the 5 years Mullins was here: Bobo Drummonds and Jacoby Roddy. Both left after 1 year and had no impact on our program. I think Mullin's time here has been a bust. We brought him in for the same reason that UIC's coach is bringing him there. Mullins father runs one of the best AAU programs in the country (Illinois Wolves). That relationship didn't do jack shit for us and I doubt it does anything for UIC either. I hope Donlon learns from his past mistake of hiring too many assistant coaches with no experience (Mullins and Woods) and brings in a veteran assistant known for recruiting from a lower tier D1 program.

Maybe it didn't do anything for us because a lot of those Illinois players wanted to stay closer to home. Perhaps Mullins will have a lot more success recruiting Illinois kids to UIC than he did recruiting them to WSU.
I just hope Billy doesn't just find a replacement, but finds an upgrade.

Perhaps Mullins will have a lot more success recruiting Illinois kids to UIC than he did recruiting them to WSU. I would buy that argument if most of the kids that we recruited from Illinois stayed in state. Most ended up at colleges all over the Midwest so that argument doesn't hold much weight. Mullins was a nice guy and represented Wright State well, but I don't think he panned out as the recruiter we hoped he would be. We need to do better with our next hire.

I know Grant Evans and Mark Howell left the program. But are there any whispers that any other players won't be back? I sure hope not. Really like the nucleus the Raiders have returning in 2015-16. And hopefully Billy will sign a couple players to bolster the roster this spring.
I'm just gunshy because it seems like we have more turnover than your average college basketball team most years (even teams within the HL). I was worried Karena might sign with a New Zealand professional team. (Does such a league even exist?) Or Roderick Davis would get homesick and look to transfer. We need all these guys back. Just wanted to see if anyone could ease my concerns about any of our other returning players possibly leaving. Are we pretty confident Evans/Howell will be the only defectors this year?
One other observation about the 2015-16 roster: We have a glut of 2 guards. This includes the only two players in the 2015 recruiting class thus far -- both SGs in Hughes and Vest. Then with the returning players or transfers we've got Thommason (can also play PG), Mitchell (can also play the 3), Benzinger, Alstork (can also play the 3). That's six guys who you could argue their natural positions are shooting guard.
We need to add a PG in the spring signing period (a JUCO or a HS senior) and adding another big man would be nice too. We're in on a lot of JUCO bigs, hopefully we land one. And hopefully we retain all of the bigs on the current roster: Karena, R.Davis, S.Davis and Ernsthausen. Especially with S.Davis being more of a 3 who's forced to play out of position when he's at the 4 or 5, it would be really nice to add a good JUCO big man this spring.
Overall, pretty excited about the team we've got coming back. Have to think the players and coaches are hungry with the way last year went. If Yoho can stay healthy and we don't suffer any attrition this offseason, I think WSU will be the surprise team of the HL this season.

The incoming freshman Hughes is a PG or a combo guard at the most. Not a shooting guard. You're right though, a JUCO PG or big man with that experience would be a great addition to next year's team.
