Wright State swept their Horizon League season opener this afternoon, thumping Oakland 11-4. The Raiders are already setting the pace in league play, starting the season 3-0. WSU jumped out of the gates early, scoring in 4 of their first 5 frames. The Raiders totaled 16 hits against Oakland's 5 pitchers, with 9 players tabbing RBIs. After one weekend of league play, WSU will sit atop the league standings at 3-0. The Raiders host NKU Wednesday evening (6:30 first pitch) before hosting Milwakuee for a Friday-Saturday-Sunday series next weekend.

In a game full of highlights, WSU edged past NKU this afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning playing small ball. Then in the third inning, WSU turned one of baseball's rarest plays, a 3-6-4 triple play. Then WKU knotted the score at 1-1 in the 5th, only to have WSU answer in the bottom of the frame on a double by Mark Fowler. It looked like WSU might cruise to an easy victory, but the Norse stormed back with 2 runs in the top of the 9th. It looked like the game was headed to extras, but Andrew McCafferty played hero with a long fly ball that plated pinch runner Derreck Garcia to give the Raiders the 4-3 walkoff win.
WSU is now 12-6, and still undefeated on home turf. The Raiders welcome in Milwaukee for a 3 game league tilt over the weekend. Games are Friday evening, and two matinee matches Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

It was another doozy this afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. It looked like the Raiders and the Panthers were destined for extra frames going into the 9th inning, but pinch hitter Matt Morrow had other thoughts. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, Morrow drove in Andrew McCafferty for the game winning run in walk-off fashion with at deep drive to center field that one hopped over the fence. The Raiders have won 8 straight ball games, all at home, while the last 3 have all been one run affairs. WSU looks to extend upon their league lead, and complete the sweep against the Panthers tomorrow at 12 noon. WSU moves to 14-6 and 5-0 in league play. After this series, the Raiders play 8 of their next 9 on the road, so make plans to catch the series finale tomorrow. www.wsuraiders.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=27000&ATCLID=209975699

Another barn burner at Nischwitz Stadium went down this afternoon. It took extra innings, but Wright State bested Milwaukee's go-ahead run in the top of the 13th with two of their own in the bottom half to sweep the Panthers, and send them back to Wisconsin without a win against the league-leading Raiders. WSU won all 3 games by one run.
Milwaukee opened the scoring on a solo jack in the first. However, WSU jumped out of the gates early too, scoring a pair in the 2nd on an Andrew McCafferty homer to right. The next inning WSU plated 2 more runs while sending 7 to the plate. However, the offense would go stale from there.
Milwaukee added a run in the 5th and another on a solo jack in the 7th. The Radiers led 4-3 going into the 9th, but Raider closer Andrew Elliot couldn't slam the door on the Panthers who plated one in the 9th.
The Raiders made a ton of noise in the bottom of the 9th. The Raiders had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, but Mark Fowler (strikeout) and Michael Timm (flyout) both failed to get the winning run to the plate, sending the game to extra frames.
Milwaukee made noise of their own in the top of the 10th. The Panthers had a runner on 3rd, and only one out, but a short flyout and then a strike out swinging ended the Panther rally.
WSU started the bottom of the 10th promising with Sean Murphy getting plunked by a pitch, but the Raiders went down quietly. All was quiet through the 11th and 12th innings. However, the Panthers finally broke through with a run in the top of the 13th after a throwing error by Raider third baseman John Brodner.
In the bottom of the frame, the first two Raiders reached via walk. Gabe Synder failed to advance the runners by flying out to center. The next Raider batter, Derreck Garcia walked to load the bases with only one out. Cue freshman Matt Morrow. His double into left field plated 2 runs to give WSU another one-run walkoff win.
WSU stretches their win streak to 9, and now leads the Horizon League by a full 2 games.
The Raiders now make a return trip to NKU on Wednesday, before opening up a weekend series at Valpariso. They are back in action at home next Tuesday against the Cincinnati Bearcats.
