The Raiders completed the 3 game sweep of Oakland this afternoon, but it came in dramatic come from behind fashion. The Raiders found themselves down to their last 4 outs, and down a run late in the ball game when Matt Morrow stroked a game tying triple down the right field line that plated pinch runner Derreck Garcia. Oakland made noise in the bottom of the 8th, only to have their base runner erased on an inning ending double play. Both squads had chances in the 9th with the Raiders stranding one, and the Grizzlies leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th.
The 10th inning was quiet, but the Raider broke through in the top of the 11th. 4 Raider hits, and an intentionally walk led to a 5 spot in the top of the 11th. Oakland had something brewing in the bottom half of the inning, but WSU's Sean Murphy eliminated the first base runner who was trying to swipe 2nd. A big single put a runner on again for Oakland, but a loud fly out to Mark Fowler in center secured the win 8-3
With the sweep, and the UIC series win 2-1 over Valpo, WSU is in sole possession of first place at 13-4. WSU has non-conference tilts at home against Dayton (Tuesday) and Miami (Wednesday) evening before heading up to Youngstown to battle the defending league champs for a 3 game series over the weekend. WSU will be looking to pay the Penguins back after the Penguins handed the Raiders their only home loss on the season last weekend. The defending champs currently sit in 5th position at 4-13.
FWIW, UIC hosts Milwaukee for 3 games over the weekend.

wsuraider09, that's funny...I was waiting to give you a chance to describe the action ( and that's the best you can do? ). Anyway, anyone at the game or watching on the internet...there was an absolute rocket shot up the middle and after the umpires consulted they ruled the ball hit off the pitcher's foot and without touching the ground was caught in the air by the shortstop. It's possible the pitcher has a steel toe attached to his shoe ( if a pitcher has a habit of dragging his foot I suppose that's possible ) but, do you think the Raiders got a break on that play? Nice win, of course.

The Wright State baseball team led 5-1 after seven innings, but had to hold off a late Dayton rally before defeating the Flyers 5-4 Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
It was a scoreless pitcher's duel between WSU starter Jeremy Randolph and UD starter Mason Kutruff until the Flyers tallied an unearned run in the top of the fourth.
The Raiders, though, answered in a big way with four runs in their half of the fourth. After hits by Sean Murphy and Ryan Fucci, Matt Morrow hit into a force out to put runners on the corners. Jason DeFevers plated Murphy with a bunt single and Gabe Snyder followed with a hit to right to drive in Morrow and make it 2-1.
John Brodner then singled up the middle to knock in DeFevers and after walks to Roman and Fowler loaded the bases, Michael Timm also walked to force in the fourth run.
Mark Fowler rounded out the scoring for Wright State in the sixth with a solo home run to left center, his third of the season.
That home run turned out to be the winning run for WSU as Dayton scored two in the eighth and added another in the ninth on a walk and double to start the frame.
The Flyers bunted the potential tying run to third, but Andrew Elliott preserved the Raider victory and earned his sixth save of the year by striking out the final two batters of the game.
Randolph (6-0) picked up the win, allowing just the unearned run in seven innings as he scattered four hits and no walks while striking out seven.
Offensively, Fowler finished a perfect three-for-three while Snyder added two hits.
Wright State (28-10) hosts Miami Wednesday at 6:30.

Hey Tommy, my son and I were at the game behind the catcher. That play was bizarre for sure but I think you have it a little wrong. It hit off his spikes as he was dragging his foot through at the end of his pitching motion. I'm pretty sure the 2nd baseman caught the ricochet not the ss. Either way, it is always fun to beat the flyers which seems to happen every year on military appreciation night! Nice walk off win tonight against Miami too! Go Raiders!

Dogbert, I was by the 3rd base dugout for Tuesday's game...if it hit the cleats rather than the top of the shoe it could explain why the pitcher didn't seem to feel it ( the UD dugout didn't fuss as much as I would have thought, which is why I wondered if ESPN3 got a good look...the fielder ended up throwing to first since there was no signal for an out but he and the first baseman acted like there was no doubt the ball had been caught for an out ). Anyway, had to rely on internet tonight...started worrying about making Andrew Elliott having to pitch another inning if needed.

WSU won in dramatic fashion last night, beating Miami 8-7 in 10 innings.
Interesting to note that WSU is undefeated against non-conference teams in Ohio this season. WSU is 2-0 against Toledo, 2-0 against Xavier, 3-0 against Miami, 2-0 against Cincinnati, and 1-0 against Dayton WSU still has one (OOC) in-state game remaining against Toledo in mid may.
WSU travels to Youngstown this weekend for a 3 game series. WSU took 2 of 3 against YSU earlier this season. WSU maintains a 1 game conference lead on UIC who host Milwaukee for 3 this evening.

WSU was not able to flex its muscles this afternoon, dropping an 13-3 decision to the last place, bottom feeding Youngstown State. The loss puts them back in a tie with UIC atop the league standings. The Penguins and the Raiders play the rubber game in the series tomorrow afternoon, a game WSU cannot afford to lose. This sets up a HUGE series next weekend against UIC. FWIW- UIC plays a twin-bill tomorrow against Milwaukee. WSU could retake first place with some help from the Panthers.

Last nights loss to YSU was not a costly one. UIC just went down at the hands of Milwaukee in game 1 of a doubleheader 7-2. Raiders back on top of the league standings, and currently lead at YSU 3-0. WSU could increase their lead by finishing out YSU and Milwaukee beating UIC in their second game.

Baseball team blew a 3 run lead late in the game at Youngstown to drop back down to a tie with UIC for first place. After cruising through their entire out of conference schedule, and beating several formidable foes in the league, WSU was unable to figure out YSU for the 2nd night in a row. A pair of tough losses up in Youngstown for the Raider squad makes the season series a 3-3 split, both teams winning 2 of 3 at home. Looking ahead, those 2 losses may come back to haunt WSU when it comes time for league seedings.
Sets up a monumental series next weekend against UIC. WSU will need to take at least 2 of the 3 games, otherwise, UIC will hold the season series tiebreaker over the Raiders. Arguably the best home series on the season next weekend. Games are Friday at 6:30, Saturday at 5, and Sunday at 1.

Don't mean to pick on wsuraider09 but, that 3-0 lead that the Raiders had earlier today pretty much disappeared as 09 was posting 5 hours ago. I believe the 5pm start on Saturday is to not interfere with graduation. Congrats to all of the student-athletes picking up a diploma ( well, congratulations to everyone ).
