I don't put much stock in early preseason predictions, but since practice starts in about 6 weeks and the season starts in just over 2 months here's something to talk about. The link below is the "College Sports Madness" top 144. It's been out the last several years. Overall, IMHO, I'd give them a "B" for their early predictions. They've missed some badly, but overall they've predicted teams close their postseason tournaments. They highlight a team each day--starting at #144 and count down to #1. Based on their projection Cleveland State is their top pick in the HL at #69 overall. They have Green Bay at #84 and going to the NIT. It will be interesting, over the next several weeks, to see where other outlets pick Wright State. www.collegesportsmadness.com/mens-basketball/top-144-previews

Sporting News has predicted the following.
1. CSU 2. Valpo 3. GB 4. Oakland 5. WSU 6. Mil. 7. YSU 8. UDM 9. UIC
They mention us having 5 new freshmen. They don't mention our two JC players coming in as Juniors, who I think may be the key if we are to do better than 5th place.

I will predict if BD decides to emphasize defense, defense and defense as the three aspects of the game. Then 5th place finish may too high. If he decides to play a strong defense, an aggressive offense and control the pace of the game on each end. Then a 5th place finish will be too low. This team should be capable of running a fast paced offense when available. Will be interesting to see if he uses the offensive skills of this team. They are more athletic than in the years past.

Any idea when the men's and women's bball schedules will be released to the press and the rosters are updated online? Players have graduated and moved on, yet they are still listed on the roster and they are still in the team picture. Are all schools as slow as WSU in these matters?

I think the HL race will be wide open this year. How well WSU does this year may rest on the play of our limited big men. The better we play "big" the better will be our finish at year end. But if our situation regarding big men is as dire as some folks think, we may end up in a 5th to 9th place finish. But right now, this 2014-15 team is more of an "unknown factor" than a "known" factor. Hopefully we find out more about this team by the time the HL play begins.

I can't take exception with anything Oren says in his article, but I felt a sense of sadness when looking at the HL rankings of the 9 teams. NINE. I hope the Commish will offer up some words this week about our prospects for adding some teams in the next year or two, besides NK which I think will be a given. Maybe we can get one more KY team and Belmont. The sooner we get 12 teams the better I'll feel about the HL and its future.
