Oakland might be getting beat by the big boys but they are getting used to playing the big time teams. The coach realizes that 95% of the time his team is not getting an at large bid to the NCAA. He knows he has to win the Horizon League Tourney.

He knows he has to win the Horizon League Tourney. Oakland is going to kill the HL if they do not learn to schedule like a mid-major. They are scheduling like a low major and it is hurting them and the HL. Conference RPI is based on the conference's D1 winning percentage. Oakland is 4-10 overall, but they are only 3-10 vs. D1 teams that count towards conference RPI. The HL's current RPI ranking is 14 with Oakland. Drop them from the calculation and we would be ranked 12. If all teams in the HL scheduled like them and had similar results, the HL would be ranked in the lower 20s which would make us a low major. The reason the HL has a decent TV contract with ESPN is because we are a top 10-15 ranked conference regularly. If we all scheduled like Oakland, you could kiss away seeing the conference on TV again because ESPN does not put low majors on their network very often. Oakland scheduling philosophy is also hurting them. They are 4-10. They aren't going to roll through the HL undefeated. They have 16 conference games plus the HL tournament to go. I doubt they finish the year above .500 but even if they do they are going to have a horrible record and RPI. If they win the HL tournament with that resume coming from the 14th rated conference in the country, the best they can hope for is to play at UD in the NCAA tournament play in game. That is not a sound mid-major scheduling philosophy and it is something they agreed to stop doing once they joined the conference.

Does the coach do the scheduling? If so I really don't think he gives a rats tail about the conference. I have listened to his interviews and I don't get the impression that he is a good soldier for the team (conference).
He will not change unless Oakland was to fire him. Sooner or later the Horizon League will tell the powers at be at Oakland that he has to stop it and he will fight it til the end.

Oakland agreed to change the way they scheduled before we agreed to let them into the HL. Their coach reneging on that agreement has pissed off most of the HL. The good thing about that is that I think it will lead to the HL coming up with a league wide scheduling policy in the future.

But I would assume he is bringing in significant funding as compensation for scheduling the bigs while also exposing them to playing solid talent. That may also attract talent to Oakland. Personally, I'd like to see WSU schedule some lower level talent from the major conferences, like Northwestern instead of OSU for instance. Having 3 such games from the Big10, ACC,, MVC, etc. would be welcomed by most WSU fans I think. Maybe we could even get a return visit in a subsequent year.

Most HL teams play 1-3 games vs. BCS schools each year. I am not discouraging any of them from playing a handful of these type of games each year. The key is scheduling responsibly. Try to play the lower tier BCS schools you have a chance to compete against or try to play the top tier BCS schools in neutral court tournaments. Oakland wasn't good last year and they lost several key players and had a bunch of new faces on their roster this year. I think anyone looking at their situation would say they were rebuilding this year. They scheduled 6 road games vs. BCS schools this year. That is asinine.
