George Mason big man Erik Copes has left the Patiots' program for personal reasons, per the school. Former Top 60 recruit.

I was excited when we announced this game in the off-season. Somehow, we convinced a team in a non mid-major conference to play us H&H. I remember back when GMU was in the Colonial they made it to the NCAA tournament 4 times since 2000 (01, 06, 08, 11), and in 2006 made it to the final four. I remember rooting hard for them as a mid-major program who knocked off UNC, UCONN, Michigan State, and Wichita State. They lost to eventually NCAA champ Floria in the final 4.
But things have changed for GMU. They play in a much tougher A-10 now...and are having an abysmal start to the season. They are 3-6 to start the year, and played all but one of those games at home. They've got a rap sheet full of close losses, and haven't won on the road yet this season.
This is looking more like a game where we really need to win. Should we beat this team? On paper, it appears we should. We have been playing much better basketball as of late on the road, and there's no reason that shouldn't be even better on our own court. Beating an A-10 team would be a nice step for the kids, and for our program. But with only two D1 wins on the season, losing to them would look pretty bad. We've got all weekend to get our plan together, while GMU has a date with Iona on Saturday. Hopefully that plays to our favor. I think we should 8-10 point favorites at home when the lines come out.
Go Raiders!

This team is now playing the style of play that suits them best. They are playing with enthusiasm and energy. I think we have three strong candidates for new comer of the league. Hopefully Stephen Davis get it going and perform upto his abilities. This team could easily have 4 players averaging double figure scoring average.

Dr. J, the last non-D1 game Steven Davis had sat out for a problem with his finger and was iffy for Belmont. He has played but I noticed the other night that the finger was still bandaged with metal to prevent it from moving...that has got to have something to do with what he can do. I started to shake his hand after Urbana but pulled back until he said I wouldn't hurt the finger. ( Anyway, he may or may not deserve a little pass for his recent play ).

Tommygun's, I realize he has an injured finger. Sorry if you took that as a negative remark about him.

Although Donlon wasn't speaking to me directly, I thought I heard him mention a player that had surgery on a finger missing all of last year. I can only assume it was in response to a question concerning Steven. ( I don't know if something is broken or torn with the finger ).
I agree that it would be nice to see him be 100%. I'm sure he'll try his best.

This is a game I expect us to win. GMU has really regressed under Paul Hewitt. Yeah, they have had some close games, but the only close game that catches my eye is the loss at Northern Iowa. Maybe the ODU game, but that was a home game for GMU. I had a chance to watch them in Puerto Rico last month and they were the worst team in the field.
No telling where GMU will finish in the A-10 this year, but a win against that conference would be a good step forward for the Raiders. I suspect they'll finish near the bottom of the A-10, but I remember the last time we had a home-and-home with an A-10 member--that team, St. Bona., also finished near the bottom (last one of those seasons) and we had close, very close, games. If memory serves me well, I believe the first year of that series was the last time we made the NCAA. Let's hope that's a good omen.

This will be a nice win for WSU to close out the non-conference season (well, except for the game at O$U) if the Raiders play well tonight. BTW, when is Kendall Griffin due back?

I asked Boggs today, he didn't really have much to say...."Taking things cautiously"
...sounds like an optimistic no to me.
