You might want to change the title of your post. Many fans are going to pass it over since it has nothing to do with Wright State.

Why do we go over this year in and year out? Every mid-major team wants to be Butler or Gonzaga. We aren't ever going to get anywhere close to that level with the way the athletic department is being ran, the coaching system we currently employ, and the product we put on the court night in and night out. I've been thinking the same thing since my freshman year at WSU in 2005... They are called dreams for a reason.

I have to agree with you WSU85. I go back further than that. I graduated in '75. I remember games at Stebbins and names like Fogt and Walker and Minch. I used to post on the old Listserv years ago and on the RRB site when things were a little more positive. I really thought when we knocked off UD at the arena (Jan 6, 1990 - I was there), and then opened the Nutter Center not long after - when we were able to recruit studs like Bill Edwards and Sean Hammonds - we were on our way. And for a while we were. But Ralph's firing and the subsequent inability to keep any kind of coaching stability has created the current situation. I did originally think that Donlon's hiring was a good thing. That he could build on the success of Brownell, like the Butler model, but that has yet to work out. Maybe it still can, but the thing that I have to admit, as much as I love the Raiders, and have supported them over the years, I can barely stand to watch them. After Ralph's uptempo "press them off the bus", "don't leave any bullets in the holster" approach, this iteration is like watching a tractor pull. There is no grace, no beauty. Just a grinding attempt to bring the opposition down to our level. The thing is, NOW is the time for mid-majors. As long as the NCAA will allow "one and done", a school that is able to keep a group of 2 or 3 star recruits together for 3 or 4 years, with a good coach, can make some noise. Just as Wichita State is doing now. Didn't we pass on their coach a few years ago when he was at Winthrop? Not that it matters, I guess.

If schools located in Wichita Kansas and Cedar Falls, Iowa can attract quality players, Wright State should be able to also. Those schools have no competition for fans or recruits and they are in a higher tier conference than the HL. If you live in Wichita Kansas, there is absolutely nothing to do. It is easy for them to attract fans. Having a full rocking arena every night attracts recruits. It also greatly increases your revenue. Trying to recruit a kid to a schools in a top 10 conference where basketball is king and you play in a packed arena all of the time is pretty easy. Wright State has to compete against multiple schools within an hour drive for fans (UD, OSU, UC, X, Miami). We also have to compete against the dozen other schools within a 3 hour drive for recruits. WSU is in a lower tier conference than most of the schools we are recruiting against in Ohio and we have very little name recognition against those other schools.

and, tipp, as long as we accept those as legitimate excuses for failure we will continue to fail. we have been doing that for way too long.

I agree with alpha in the 'tractor pull' mentality. We are just boring to watch, and we play boring basketball. We don't have a very good home atmosphere. And to go off of what Tipp said, I think those factors don't give us any kind of 'Wow Factor' to land recruits who have offers from schools in higher tiers. We can all sit around here and kick the can wishing we were Butler or Wichita...but we've been kicking that can for years, and nothing has really improved. We aren't drawing 6,7,8k fans for marquee match-ups like we used to.

What opposing team have we had this year that people were beating the doors down to see if we did not give something away for free.

Yes there is plenty to moan about and if you do someone will post that you should just stay home...a sure way to boost attendance. I hold onto my season tickets in the hope that someday we'll get a coach that brings excitement and fans back to the Nutt House. Maybe next season Billy will give us a good, balanced team that can win at home and on the road, shoot 45% or better from the field, at least 35% from the arc, and over 70% from the line, and win the boards. And on top of all that maybe play at least a 50/50 split of non-conference games at WSU against good teams. I don't think Brad and Billy believe in that type of schedule strength, but we can always hope. If we can put a good, competative team on the court I think WSU can start to build the gate. But that is the horse we have to put in front of the cart.

I believe we will have a very competitive team on the court next year but will it be used to fit it's strengths, that is the question. Scheduling we will see what that will be. Even though our record is horrible this year I thought the players gave some entertaining games to watch. I did not like the outcome of some but a few of those are on the shoulders of the coach.

I disagree with the recruiting argument. Everyone competes for recruits all over the country. Most players on Wichita State or Northern Iowa are not from Iowa or Kansas. Look at Iowa teams. The Iowa Hawkeyes are in a major conference, but Northern Iowa and Iowa State are ranked higher. I know Iowa State is Big 12 but it is still a mid major. 1. The Big 12 is not a mid major 2. I believe his point is that it is easier to recruit a kid to a school that is in a better conference and plays in front of a packed house every night. That is a very legit argument.

Example Trey Landers commits to UD. By the the way if you want to see some talent going to Div. 1 teams Wayne plays Stebbins tonight at Trotwood in the state tourney. Wagner committed to Iowa and the other commit Williams to UD. There is a freshman that is around 6-5 that is as good as Landers. I wonder who is going to sign him. I will be sitting on the Stebbins side though I know it will end up bad for the Indians.

Talking to a few college students a couple of days ago and they said that Wright State has an identity crisis. One question they asked was why does the University have a logo of the Wright Flyer, but the athletic mascot has nothing to do with the Wright Brothers or Aviation. Secondly, they said if your team is called the Raiders, why is there a picture of a dog. I could not answer either question. In conclusion, they said that Wright State should start over with how they want to market themselves, at the very least the mascot and the logo should be one.

One factor in the success of these programs is simply how much $ is designated for Men's Basketball. Or how much do some schools really want to have a successful program. Here are the Men's Basketball expenses for many of the programs we desire to be like, as well as WSU men's basketball expenses. This is for 2013, so I assume the 2012-13 season(?). This info is from basketballstate.com, which is a terrific informational site.
Gonzaga $5,947,963 Wichita State $5,369,577 VCU $5,052,379 Dayton $3,985,079 Xavier $4,346,173 Butler $4,282,684 N Iowa $2,397,995 Wright State $2,029,536
Obviously Northern Iowa is getting the best "bang for their buck". I think it's obvious, just like with any business or investment, you get out of it what you put into it. If we want to become one of these programs someday, we need to make the commitment that they have made.
