Wright State has hired Patrice Days as one of our new assistant basketball coaches. He coached the last 2 years at Abeliene Christrian.

I'm not trying to be rude to anyone in the AD, but THIS is what we come up with?
This guy has quite a reputation it seems in the prep academy sector. We pick him up after second season with a D2 christian university? He hasn't recruited D1 talent likely ever, or ever coached it.
I don't see it.

Abilene Christian is part of the Southland Conference now. Stephen F. Austin is probably best known for basketball but, Houston Baptist got some recognition in the recent baseball season.
I have no idea of who might be interested in the open coaching vacancies. If DJ wanted to talk about it ( before being named head coach at Vandalia Butler ) or someone like Frank Goldsberry might be interested in returning to men's basketball I'd have talked to him, too. Don't know anything about Coach Days but if he brings energy and a willingness to make us better then that's good enough for me.

To set the record straight. ACU is a provisional D I program. They are still in the stages of reclassifying their programs. Last year was the first year they played a full D I schedule. They won't be eligible for men's post-season tournament for another 3 years--2018. Let there be no doubt, ACU is a Football school.
That said, I'll take a wait-and-see attitude. There have been many people who have had a successful transition from the D II (for the sake of the argument I'll throw in D I provisional) ranks to D I. Bruce Pearl ring a bell with anyone?

mrose, I thought the most important part was what an assistant coach for Abilene Christian dealt with, recruiting wise, the past 2 seasons. Correct me if I'm wrong but, I thought any recruiting was with the idea of competing against Southland Conference teams. I think the last two schedules had them playing those teams.
Assistants have to do a lot of things. I worry about game planning, too.
I don't think anything other than the period Days was down there is all that relevant.

The other thing we need to wait and find out is which assistant coach is he replacing. I think he is filling Mullins spot. Mullins was supposed to be the young recruiter that got us into the Illinois recruiting area due to his father's AAU connections. That never really materialized and Mullins wasn't really known as being good at player development. I think Days is going to be a good recruiter for us. I hope he proves himself on the player development side too. As of right now, I think we have an upgrade if he was brought in to replace Mullins.
The bigger question is who replaces Coach Moore. We need an experienced assistant to replace him on the bench.

If DJ wanted to talk about it ( before being named head coach at Vandalia Butler ) or someone like Frank Goldsberry might be interested in returning to men's basketball I'd have talked to him, too. I think DJ left for the Vandalia job because he was told we were not going to promote him to one of our open assistant positions.

Big D, I suspected that was a possibility with DJ. He is correct about high school coaching being a good fit for a young couple wanting to start a family ( time and travel wise ). There are many coaches that worked their way up and I would expect DJ was willing to work with that in mind. I wish him luck, he helped me and friends while he was at WSU.

Good point, Tommy. The question is how does an outsider gauge his work at ACU? There's not much of a baseline or peer group to assess his success. I imagine recruiting for a reclassifying program is a bit different than an established program. Throw in the reality their program is affiliated with a low-major conference and I suspect the target recruit is in a different world than the one we presumably live in. Off the top of my head there are a few other reclassifying programs that are affiliated with low-major conferences. For me, I believe it's fair game to compare his recruiting to those at Incarnate Word (also in the Southland), Northern Kentucky, Nebraska-Omaha, and Grand Canyon. I know I'm probably missing a couple, but compare him to those schools too.
Lastly, I know the Twitter world fired-up with his hiring. I don't give that any credence in how that will translate to his recruiting at WSU. Twitter blows up more often than not when people are hired for a job at this level--It means nothing. If Twitter were around when Ed Schilling was hired they would have had to increase the number of characters allowed and bought more bandwidth.

mrose, do you want to assign all of the recruits to just one coach for each of these transitional schools? I'd think the head coach would most likely deserve that honor if it is only one guy responsible. Do you give credit to everyone a school recruits or just the ones that sign?
As it is, ACU may or may not be moving in the right direction based on the wins and losses. Two years ago the schedule might have been tough and this year's SOS is what in comparison? What if some of the players go crazy after Days leaves? A little too late to decide what you are hoping to get the answer to now, I'd think.
I don't Twitter, do the people sending out the tweets have any credibility? You have to decide that for yourself.

IMO the jury will be out on this issue for sometime. For now I'd say, welcome to WSU and best of luck in the coming years.

I will be positive about this hire and hope it turns out well for everyone. He may turn out to be the best hire BD has had. But we also have to remember BD is still in charge and responsible for the program. If he allows the assistants to do their jobs with his assistance then we will see what each of them can do. I like it that he has connections with prominent prep schools. Their second line players can be developed into great players.

I like this hire. He at least has some experience. Woods and Mullins had no prior experience when we hired them.
