I'm very optimistic about this season. I can't remember seeing a WSU team with so much quality depth. Now, to be fair, I'm expecting good things out of players I've never seen play in person, so there are a lot of unknowns. I think Daniel Mortensen is going to be very good, but who really knows. I also like the cadre of veteran guards that Donlon brought in with Minnis, Neel and Alstork (who of course transferred last year). I don't think any of those guys will be stars (maybe Alstork in future years, but he's hurt right now) but I think they'll be solid and I love the depth we have in the backcourt with those 3 to go along with Thomasson, Benzinger, Mitchell and Hughes (who was a great player at the HS level -- very underrated recruit IMO).
If Yoho can stay healthy, he's going to have a big senior season. He keeps getting better and has added muscle each year. He's filled out quite well -- he was a skinny guy in HS, but is now 6-6, 235. Hopefully he can log most of his minutes at the 3 because I think he plays out of position when Donlon uses him as a 4. But in past years, that was necessary at times due to our lack of depth inside.
This is the biggest/tallest WSU team I can remember. Karena is 6-10, Roderick Davis and Mortensen are both 6-9, and Steven Davis is 6-8. (It looks like a lot of guys grew an inch in the offseason -- or WSU is just being more generous on its official roster this year. RDavis was listed at 6-8 last year and SDavis was listed as 6-7.) It seems like we're always undersized and lack depth inside. That doesn't appear to be the case this season. Far from it, in fact.
Overall, I can see why some Raider fans need to see it first before they get too excited. But I'm jacked up about this season. I think we're going to be the surprise team of the HL. Hopefully we can start the season strong by going to the Northern Illinois tournament and winning all 3 games. That will be a nice way to kickstart the season and build some early confidence.
