Could not listen to the game tonight, but been following the board the last few minutes. Some things that I see as early positives from this team: 1) Held them to 41% shooting, and forced 15 turnovers to WSU 10 turnovers 2) WSU did decent on the glass considering that Mortensen, Davis, and Karena were out 3) WSU shot well at the line (76%) 4) WSU won despite not getting a great offensive showing from Benzinger
Very encouraging start to the season.

We could have a really good team this year. Imagine what these guys will look like with all hands on deck. None of the current injuries are long-term issues. Alstork is a stud. Yoho is going to probably average 18 ppg this year. Thomasson is very good. Benzinger will shoot much better than he did tonight. This is the biggest WSU team in recent memory.
I'm probably more excited than I should be -- I know it's just one game -- but I was feeling really good about this team even before tonight. And to come out and handle a decent South Dakota team with ease after a slow start, just very impressed and excited for this season. Get ready for the Raiders, Horizon League!

Jim Brown just said they wanted to redshirt Vest, but didn't because of the injuries.

Alstork had 27 and Yoho had a double double with 18 and 11. I think Thomasson is (and has been) quietly the best player on our team, though. He only went 3/12 from the field, but got to the line and went 9/10. He dished out 9 assists (how often has that happened in a Donlon offense?), grabbed 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. The guy does everything for us.

Jim Brown just said they wanted to redshirt Vest, but didn't because of the injuries. From the stats, him and Hughes belonged. If those guys can compete, that really deepens the roster. They played a combined 44 minutes, and together had 10 points, 5 boards, 4 assists and only 1 turnover. Great start for those two and probably gives them more confidence. I think most fans realize, but are afraid to admit out of fear of getting their hopes up, that this team has a chance to be very special based on the combination of size, shooting, and experience. Just have to avoid the injury bug come league play.

You are getting waaaay too excited about this win. We beat a shitty South Dakota team tonight playing a 4 guard line up most of the game. Our 2 available post players Roderick and Parker only played 11 minutes combined and didn't score or get a rebound. You can beat a team like South Dakota playing like that. You aren't going to be competing for championships in the HL playing like that.

I am glad that we found a way to win tonight. Our 2 available seniors stepped up and played like seniors. Alstork had a great game and our freshmen were able to contribute. This team has a chance to be pretty darn good when Karena, Mitchell, Mortensen, and Davis can play. I agree with Indy though. The top teams in the HL all have legit inside players. We aren't going to win this conference playing 4 guards. We need our injured big men back and we need Roderick and Parker to elevate their game.

I agree with this not being a template for how we want to compete in the HL, but considering that this team found so many ways to lose last year, and the amount of hurt players we have, I think fans can get excited about this win so long as the guys don't s**t the bed tomorrow in the second game. Last year, the team would have found a way to completely blow it. This year, they came from behind and pulled away.

Considering how shorthanded we were, this was a very good win. Once we get a full roster or somewhat close, look out. I really love this roster -- deepest/biggest WSU team in recent memory. I don't know how you can be a Raider fan and not be excited about this group.

You are forgetting (or choosing to ignore) that we were without 5 scholarship players. Considering how shorthanded we were, this was a very good win. Once we get a full roster or somewhat close, look out. I really love this roster -- deepest/biggest WSU team in recent memory. I don't know how you can be a Raider fan and not be excited about this group. I think you are forgetting or choosing to ignore several facts. 1. We were without several scholarship players last night. THAT ISN'T NEW. We haven't had a full roster in any of Donlon's seasons as coach here. I doubt we will at any point in time this year either. 2. Donlon never uses his size. Even last night. He barely played Roderick who is supposed to be our backup center and PF. He prefers a 4 guard line up and will use any excuse to play it. We had a good lead at the end of the game last night. He should have had Roderick on the court getting him playing time. We are going to need to play bigger in the HL if we want to finish in the top 1/2 of the conference. 3. That deepest/biggest roster in recent memory still has no proven inside players outside of Karena and Yoho. Yoho really isn't an inside player and Karena is going to foul out of most games this year the way they are calling games now. The kid from Denmark hasn't played a second of D1 college ball. S. Davis hasn't made it through a season at WSU yet half way healthy and as Donlon showed last night he doesn't trust Roderick or Parker to play even against a crappy team like South Dakota. 4. The HL champion the last 5 years has been a team with a legit inside game. We lost twice in the championship game to teams we couldn't compete against inside. we are a team that will live and die by the 3 because we cannot take it inside. Every team in the HL knows that. I'm a Raider fan and unfortunately I see deja vu all over again. We might have a group of new faces on our roster but we still have the same coach who doesn't seem to understand you cannot win without some size.
