Here's a brief recap:
We weren't really in this game, from the opening tip. The BGSU offense was very dry to start the game. We committed I think 11 fouls to 2 in the first half. We had several fast break and points off of steals, but our half court offense wasn't going all night. We had several unforced turnovers, numerous block/charge calls go against us, and everybody under the sun chucking up 3s. In the second half, BGSU got their offense together, and our defense didn't have any answers. We even went zone halfway through the 2nd, and they still had it going. There wasn't one Raider who wanted the ball in their hand, yet everybody was shooting the rock. Our bigs got in foul trouble, and we had no interior presence.
Hopkins led WSU with 13 points, and was the only one in double digits for the Raiders. Stephen Davis, 10 minutes played, just one point, one board. Unproductive. Karena, 21 minutes played, 1 FG, 6-6 from the stripe.
Team stats:
WSU shot 32.7% from the field, BG 42.6% WSU shot 7-26 from 3, compared to 5-11 for BG Lost the boards 39-31 Lost points in the paint 30-16 Had 18 turnovers compared to 14.
Lost pretty much every statistical category besides FT%

"We weren't really in this game, from the opening tip." LOL I'd say being down three points with 10 minutes to play qualifies for, at the very minimum, being "in the game".

The only reason that we were only down by 10 is that BG missed at least a dozen wide open layups / slams in the first half. Point blank opportunities that were not converted. I know this will get better with time, but we weren't playing as a unit on either side of the ball. Missed assignments on the defensive end, passes to dead air on the offensive end...if the replay is available, watch it and you'll see. We were lucky to only lose by 15. We were ran out of the arena. We were off the entire game. We really weren't in it.

I watched the entire game live via the MAC feed. I prefer the glass half-full outlook. As poorly as we played, especially our “Big 3” (RA, CH, & Joe T.) and with the lack of production/PT from Steven Davis, I’m encouraged that we were still in the game (down by 3) with 10 minutes left. It appears to me that BG has a pretty good and very experienced team, probably better than at least half of our Horizon league foes.

I'm all for the glass half full approach too...I think you can blame a lot of this on the first road collegiate game of like half our team...and as I mentioned earlier, I think it should get better. It's frustrating how we can go looking like a top mm program at home last week, to a 300+ RPI team on the road. This team won't go .500 on the road playing like we played today. Hopefully it gets better. But there were like 100 people at that game...the atmosphere was pretty much zilch. How is this team going to play against 4k+ at Valpo or GB without being absolutely embarrassed. I bet we'll have one or two home losses on the season...and lose 75% of our road games. We just don't have it together yet...not surprising with all the new faces. Bodes well for the future if we can keep the players here, and they can avoid off season issues. Our odds get better the sooner we get KG back (if)

I blame this entirely on the players who couldn't stay out of trouble this offseason. If we would have had any kind of inside depth today, we win that game. We got owned inside by a bigger more experienced team. If Sledge was still on the team and Yoho wasn't suspended I think you would have seen a different outcome.

We weren't in the game from the opening tip? Then explain to me and all the rest of us how WSU was up 1 point at the half? We're you at the game '09? Your comments aren't worth a bucket of warm spit.

I don't understand why JT was suspended for last night. Vaughn Duggins was suspended for 2 games a few years back for his DUI arrest. Why did JT get a 3 game suspension for the same offense? We got manhandled last night under the basket. I completely agree with Willie in that I think we would have had a different outcome if he would have played.

I don't like that we lost, but I was happy we were in this game up until the end. We have very little experience and we played our first road game of the season yesterday. BG returned all 5 starters from last year and can go 10-12 deep. We played last night minus 3 guys we were planning on starting just a month ago: Sledge, JT, and Kendall. Our top 3 guys left on the roster: Hopkins, Reggie, and Thomasson all had off nights on the same night. Yet, we were still in a position where we could have come away with a win on the road. Another bright side is that Grant Evans finally made a few 3s and is starting to get into the flow of the offense. We are in a rebuilding year like it or not. I think we can still have a successful year, but we are going to have a bunch of highs and lows. I am looking forward to the rest of the season and watching our young guys grow up on the court.

But who cares, they made a choice and have to deal with the consequence. Coach is probably showing the guys that if you make a get in trouble with the law, you will not play. No matter if you are a (potential) key player. That takes some onions to do, and I respect that. 09' thanks for the recap and info. Like the minority on this board, I think the team will be competitive in the HL. I actually have some high hopes; might just take some time.

Jazzfan, if I remember correctly Vaughn wasn't on that trip for the exempt tournament in Washington ( there were 3 games played by the Raiders ). Again, the timing might not be right to the offense involving Vaughn but I think that was it.

It seemed like on a few people were active and watching due to the obnoxiously weird start time. The feed was very choppy, and made individual plays difficult to see in their entirety. One final thought, that I didn't realize due to the crappy feed...BG held WSU without a field goal the final 10 minutes of the contest... BD said in an interview earlier this season we were going to have to push the tempo more because we are smaller and faster. Now that we are missing probably our best defender, we aren't going to be in game where we have dry stretches like that.

The bottom line is that BG won every stat line that I looked at. After the game I heard two BG fans discussing how BG just dominated the paint. Unless WSU can find a way to avoid many repeats of that, I think we'll be in for a long season. S. Davis continues to struggle against DI foes. If he doesn't, we'll be down to 3 effective big men, barring illness and injuries to any of them. My biggest concern coming into this season was our lack of big men, especially big men with basketball talent, like scoring ability or being a major presence on the boards. If you have a load of guards they had better be very good in all phases of the game. So far Hopkins, Thomasson, and Reggie show they have that level of skill. The rest better up their game ASAP.
