Quite honestly, if Nagy interviewed with Southern Illinois I hope he leaves. We dealt with a semi successful coach in Brownell for years who always had his foot halfway out the door looking for greener pastures instead of trying to improve his roster or staff. I want a coach focused on his job here trying to make Wright State the best program it can be. The program hasn’t been the same the last several years. A few fans like to say all of Nagy’s success was based on one player, London Love and that is just plain stupid. He was very successful at his previous school before he came to Wright State and it was never based on one player or another. I think the vast majority of our recent decline is based on Nagy losing his top 2 assistants and his father’s death. I don’t think it is a coincidence that the 2 assistant coaches that left coached for teams that went to the NCAAs this year while we got booted from the HL tournament in round 2. Brian Cooley ran our practices and I don’t think it is a surprise that our defense has gone to shit since he left. His attention to detail was always very impressive. Brian was also our recruiting coordinator and that coaching staff worked their asses off on the recruiting trail. They had to, because Nagy isn’t a good recruiter at all. I can’t remember the last time I even heard that he went off campus to recruit. He is a very old school coach that expects his assistants to find the right players and get them on campus and he acts as a closer. Our current staff just isn’t at the same level as our last staff in that regards. I think it is also evident that Nagy doesn’t display the same passion for coaching as he did before he lost his father. If it wasn’t for Clint Sargent, I don’t know if we would have even fielded a team the year after our other coaches left. Nagy took his good ole time replacing the rest of the staff and left it to Clint to keep the roster together and fill out the class. He got promoted to Associate Head Coach after that.
I think Clint Sargent could be a good head coach someday but I really think he needs to spend some time under another head coach first and gain some more experience and a different perspective on how to do things other than the way Nagy does it. I would try to hire Brian Cooley if it was up to me. If Nagy leaves, the next coach is probably going to have to do a complete rebuild of the coaching staff and roster. I think we lose all 3 recruits and anyone on the roster that has other options. I think Cooley is much better prepared to do that with his extra years of experience and connections in the coaching world. I think he will be able to put together a good staff. He is a respected coach that I think other coaches will trust their future with. I don’t know if many good assistant coaches will be willing to work for someone as inexperienced as Sargent and trust their future in his hands. I think he would get stuck putting together a really inexperienced staff of guys trying to cut their teeth in the college coaching world. We can’t afford to have a rookie head coach and staff especially in this new college basketball world with NIL and the transfer portal. We need a least a little bit of experience.
