I'm glad I'm not the only one concerned. I've always heard “no news is good news”. I think in this situation it only means no news. I’m concerned the transfers are concerned about lack of head coach experience. I don’t think that really has much to do with our lack of commitments. Like I have said several times now, I was hoping that Clint would have hired an experienced assistant to fill the 3rd coaching spot. No one on our staff is an experienced coach when it comes to the portal and utilizing NIL. Nagy didn’t like the portal and didn’t really have his staff utilize it much so Sargent, Bere, and Trice have limited experience with it. Cole and Jaaron have no real recruiting experience let alone portal recruiting experience. Recruiting high school kids is like a guy courting a girl in the 1960s. Recruiting the portal is like speed dating or looking for a hook up on Tinder. Our staff is trying to build relationships with kids when other schools are calling kids up and just offering them a scholarship and NIL bag. Our staff needs to start landing some kids to get the ball rolling in the right direction. They aren’t going into next season with 5 open spots. They are going to use those scholarships one way or another. They need to land some quality players. We can’t afford to let all the good players commit elsewhere while we are trying to get their shit together. We can’t afford to fill out the roster with guys that can’t contribute like Bo Myers.

Agree-Nice coach pickup here, would say our chances of getting both kids from Alter in portal have definitely increased. We need both if Sargent can make it happen! There is only 1 kid from Alter in the portal that we are recruiting: Jacob Conner.

Brian Cooley would be the smart choice, I’m afraid WSU will go with the easy choice and promote Brown to AD and Sargent as the next basketball coach just because it will be easier and cheaper to stick with the status quo. I like Sargent but he isn’t a program builder. He does a good job recruiting but he likes to recruit a small group of players each year and does a good job landing a couple of them. He isn’t equipped to refill 1/2 to 3/4 of a roster the way he recruits. I would have liked Cole to be added in Tae Gibbs role. It would have been the next step up the coaching ladder, not a full blown assistant. Cole has absolutely no recruiting experience and more importantly no recruiting connections. Half the battle of recruiting is getting past the gate keepers, which are the high school and AAU coaches. If those guys like you, you have an in with their players. Cole currently brings nothing to the table from that regards. I think Cole will eventually be a good recruiter but it is going to take some time. I wrote the first quote before Clint was hired and the second after Cole was added as our last assistant coach able to recruit off campus. After losing Webber today it is pretty imperative that they both prove me wrong. We now have 5 open scholarships for next year and some glaring holes to fill. The only player Clint has offered a scholarship to since being named head coach decided to attend the worst program in the HL instead of coming to Wright State. Honestly, that was a straight kick to the balls for the program. The staff needs to step up their game big time and start making good additions to the roster for next year.

Do we even have an opening for another full time assistant coach or just a player development position? Feels like maybe we should be tempering our expectations for how big of an impact the remaining staff position is going to be. I’m 2023 the NCAA changed the rules for the number of assistant coaches allowed. I am not sure what the exact rule is and how many of those coaches can recruit off campus etc.

Would love to see Wright State bring in some players from Overseas. Seemed like Wright State was one of the first teams to bring in Foreign players, beginning with the Underhill era. Players like Herriman, Potapenko, Sheinfeld, Nahar, Kos and I think Bruno Peterson was from Latvia. Can anyone think of any other foreign players who played for Wright State? As Runt pointed out, those days are long gone and not coming back for us, at least with our current coaching staff. As I mentioned a few posts back when I brought up what Cole Gentry lacked as a recruiter, it is all about relationships. A very large part of recruiting is knowing who to recruit and getting your foot in the door. Underhill was able to bring in overseas recruits in a large part because he knew overseas scouts that would tell him they had a handful of kids it would be worth taking a look at. Those scouts made sure those kids would be interested in the chance to come to the US and going to school at WSU. They would also make sure those kids would be able to get through the NCAA clearinghouse. Underhill would travel overseas every other year to take a look at those kids then. We don’t have a coach on our staff with any of those connections and like Runt pointed out, kids overseas now know they have much better options to come to the US than coming to WSU. Nowadays more foreign players also come to the US and spend a year at prep schools to get the exposure they need to get scholarships. Ultimately, it isn’t a goal of our coaching staff to bring in foreign recruits. If anything, I know they would like to recruit better locally in Ohio.
