This game is as close to a must-win as we've had this year. We have a lot more experience and depth than the first time around and if we can limit their offensive rebounds and knock down free throws we should have a great chance to win and clinch the #2 seed for the conference tourney. I believe Coach Brownell will have us ready. It should be a great game and atmosphere; I like our chances.

Does the Valpo game tip-off at 11AM or noon here in Dayton? Noon Dayton time. Valparaiso is in the Central time zone. The upper Northwest corner of Indiana is Central time while the rest of Indiana is Eastern time.

Boy this should be a good one. I like the fact that the #2 seed is on the line. It should give our players an extra sense of purpose. I also like that our bench is almost completely healthy again. Gavin played some last night and looked pretty good. JDG dressed and ran through warm-ups. If he is healthy and able to contribute at all in the HL tournament, that will be a huge bonus. 21 and 1/2 hours until tip. I can hardly wait.

blogs.post-trib.com/lazerus/2008/02/the-possibilities-are-endlessl.htmlThe possibilities are endless(ly confusing) By Mark Lazeruson February 28, 2008 10:52 PM | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0) OK, so after VU's too-close-for-comfort win over Detroit, here's where things sit in the Horizon League. 1. Butler 15-2 2. Wright State 12-5 3. Cleveland State 11-6 4. Milwaukee 9-8 5. Valparaiso 8-9 6. UIC 8-9 7. Green Bay 8-9 8. Loyola 6-11 9. Youngstown State 5-12 10. Detroit 3-14 Here's what we know. --Butler will be the top seed and host the semifinals and finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse. --Detroit will be the 10th seed. That's about it. Yikes. Here's what can happen on Saturday at the ARC: --If VU beats Wright State, it very well could cost the Crusaders a home game. Because chances are CSU will beat YSU, meaning a VU win would knock Wright State to the third seed, costing the Crusaders their tiebreak edge over UIC and Green Bay. If VU, Green Bay and UIC all win on Saturday, and CSU beats YSU, Valparaiso would lose the tiebreaker to GB, Milwaukee and UIC (all 9-9) because Cleveland State will be the second seed, and VU was swept by CSU while GB, Milwaukee and UIC each have a win over CSU. Confused? In short, VU will be on the road as the seventh seed if the following teams all win (which is no stretch): VU, UIC, Green Bay and CSU. --If VU wins and UIC loses to Milwaukee, VU gets a home game. --If VU wins and Green Bay loses to Loyola, VU gets a home game. --If VU wins, and UIC and Green Bay BOTH lose, VU gets a home game and assures itself of the fifth seed, behind Milwaukee. --If VU, UIC and Green Bay ALL lose, VU gets a home game and the fifth seed because WSU will stay the second seed, giving VU the tiebreak. --If VU and either UIC OR Green Bay lose (just one of them), VU gets a home game and the sixth seed. --If Wright State beats VU, WSU will clinch the second seed. --If Wright State loses to VU and Cleveland State loses to YSU, Wright State will clinch the second seed and Cleveland State will clinch the third seed. --If Wright State loses to VU and Cleveland State beats YSU, Cleveland State will clinch the second seed and Wright State will clinch the third seed. OK, my head's spinning. I think I got that all right. But remember, I was a journalism major, not a math major. The Horizon League should release a more complete scenario breakdown for all teams on Friday, and I'll be sure to post it here. And be sure to read Saturday's Post-Tribune for a look at what Saturday's showdown against Wright State all means.

This should be a great game. WSU is coming off a 2 game losing streak and we lost a close game to Valpo earlier this year. We should have something to prove.

To me we need to control their big men. We have more big bodies to throw at Valparaiso's big guys this time around.
Valparaiso is on a roll having won three games in a row so we will have to bring our A game if we hope to win. We can not let a player like Haapna get hot from the perimeter because it will only open up their inside game even more.
I just hope our offense can find a groove and not struggle to score like they have been over their last six too ten games.
This game concerns me. I would hate to lose that second seed.

Preview: Wright State at ValparaisoBy Marc Katz Saturday, March 01, 2008 When: Noon today, March 1 TV: ESPN2 Radio: WONE-AM (980), WIZE-AM (1340) Records: Wright State 20-8, 12-5; Valparaiso 18-12, 8-9 Wright State Player Yr Ht Pos Ppg Vaughn Duggins So. 6-3 G 14.2 Will Graham Jr. 6-2 G 5.9 Todd Brown So. 6-5 G 12.9 Jordan Pleiman Sr. 6-8 F 7.9 Scottie Wilson Sr. 6-6 F 9.5 Valparaiso Player Yr Ht Pos Ppg Michael Rogers Fr. 6-6 G 10.0 Howard Little Fr. 6-4 G 9.9 Jake Diebler Jr. 6-3 G 5.0 Shawn Huff Sr. 6-7 F 12.3 Urule Igbavboa Jr. 6-9 F 10.1 About Valparaiso The Crusaders have won three straight and four of five, but without a regular lineup. After using the same starters for their first 23 games (14-9) the Crusaders have had four different lineups over the past seven games (4-3). Freshmen guards Howard Little and Michael Rogers were the latest into the starting lineup. Senior Jarryd Lloyd scored all 15 of his points in the second half against Detroit. The Titans led by as many as 10 in the second half, but were passed for good with 1:01 to play on two free throws. Valpo won 59-56. The Crusaders are 8th in the nation in 3-point shooting (40.4 percent). They're trying to pack their gym (5,000 seats) for today's game, offering free tickets to students of any age and $2 tickets to their parents. Also, free T-shirts and pizza are involved. About Wright State At times this season, the Raiders have received big numbers from players off the bench. Thursday, Feb. 28, those numbers were reduced to seven points (Butler had only 11), six rebounds and no assists. The five reserves used played only 39 minutes. Valpo stunned the Raiders with a 71-66 victory at the Nutter Center on Dec. 6 to open Horizon League play, in the process breaking WSU's 15-game home winning streak. Reserve forward Cooper Land shaved his beard after the loss at Illinois State on Feb. 24 and won't begin growing it back until the Raiders win again. Because of the intensity of Thursday's game and expected intensity of today's, coaches used mostly a film session Friday to get the team ready. Instead of a full-scale practice, there was only a late-afternoon shoot-around. If the Raiders lose, they won't know their fate for seeding in the Horizon League tournament until after today's 7 p.m. Cleveland State at Youngstown State game. FYI This is the third time in a month Valparaiso has hosted a game broadcast on one of the ESPN platforms. It is WSU's third straight game on an ESPN network, all of them on the road. Quote "The last two games (counting this one) have been very emotional. They're big games from that standpoint." — WSU coach Brad Brownell www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2008/03/01/ddn030108wsuprev.html

Win would clinch No. 2 seed for Wright StateBy Marc Katz Staff Writer Saturday, March 01, 2008 VALPARAISO, Ind. — Today's March 1 lunchtime basketball game between Wright State and Valparaiso could hardly be more important to either team. For Wright State, a win (or a Cleveland State loss tonight) means second place in the Horizon League and two byes into the semifinal round of next week's league tournament. For Valpo, a win clinches an opening-round home game in the tournament. "It's a tough challenge and a short amount of time to prepare," WSU coach Brad Brownell said. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they've exhausted all their friendly tiebreakers should they lose and Cleveland State win at Youngstown State. That scenario would put WSU and CSU into a tie for second and drop WSU to the No. 3 tourney seed. In that situation, the Raiders would host a game Tuesday, March 4. They would need a win to move on to the quarterfinals Friday, March 7, at Butler. Wright State's Thursday night, Feb. 28, game at Butler — a 66-61 loss — ended after 11 p.m. Today's game starts at noon. That's a quick turnaround. "I played five games all in one day in an AAU tournament in Las Vegas," WSU sophomore Todd Brown said. "Before that last game, I didn't want to play. I was younger then, probably about 17." Brown wants to play this game. "We've got to get to second place," he said. Senior Scottie Wilson also has experienced basketball overload. He once played in four junior-college games in one day. His team won them all. "That's the closest I've been to being real tired," Wilson said. WSU sophomore Vaughn Duggins said he had only one year of AAU ball, but once pulled an all-nighter with his high school friends. "We had a midnight tournament during Christmas break," Duggins said. "We played until 5, 6 in the morning. Then, it was time to go to sleep." www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2008/03/01/ddn030108wsubb.html
