Head coaching candidate profile: Brad Brownell by Martin Rickman Apr 9, 2010 As it is appearing more and more likely that Brad Brownell is realistically in the running for the Wake Forest job, it's time to look a little deeper at the Wright State head coach. Brad Brownell certainly won't bowl people over with his pedigree, but there is something to be said about his consistency as a head coach. Since becoming the head coach at UNC-Wilmington, he has won 20 games in six of his eight years, including all four years at Wright State. He has three tournament appearances under his belt, two with the Seahawks and one in his first year at the helm coaching the Raiders. Pretty impressive stats for a guy who was let go from UNC-W. The background story on that is a bit muddled, but from all accounts, Brownell wanted a raise and the AD flatout said no. For a coach who had just been to the NCAA Tournament, Brownell felt that he deserved the bump in pay and he packed his bags for Fairborn to coach in the Horizon League. The book on Brownell is pretty basic. He's a decent recruiter (2010's class includes four guys ranked 80 or higher on ESPN), he is young (41), his teams play good defense (61st in the country in defensive efficiency) and they play smart. They will not wow you offensively, they were 316th in the nation in tempo. Simply put, Brad Brownell is about as safe as they come. He won't ruffle feathers, he's won some coaching awards, he'd represent the university well and he'd likely be able to contend for NCAA Tournament appearances most years as long as his recruiting success at the mid-major level can translate to the ACC. And in all likelihood, he would retain one if not two of Dino's assistant coaches. There is a fear though that due to Brownell's plodding offense that he may lose one or two of the 2010 guys, who were brought in expecting a faster-paced offensive mindset. But, that said, didn't Boston College just fire a guy who sounds just like Brad Brownell? Didn't Wake just fire a guy who won an NCAA Tournament game last season? Is Brownell really a guy that will excite a fanbase that is disillusioned after collapses the last two seasons? I'm not saying that Brownell wouldn't be a good fit and have the chance to be successful. What I am confused about is this: if Ron Wellman fired Dino Gaudio to make a statement and a commitment to winning in the post-season, did he really do that just so that he could hire Brad Brownell? www.bloggersodear.com/2010/4/9/1413016/head-coaching-candidate-profile

WSU’s Brownell interviews at ClemsonBy Tom Archdeacon April 9, 2010 Wright State coach Brad Brownell is a serious candidate to replace Oliver Purnell at Clemson. That’s what CBSSports.com is reporting today. Clemson officials interviewed Brownell on Thursday. Contacted by phone Friday afternoon, Brownell wouldn’t discuss the report: “My policy has always been I don’t comment one way or another on job concerns….Half the time these reports that come out are wrong.” Asked if this report is wrong, Brownell wouldn’t say yes or no. “I hope you understand,” he said. “I just don’t comment on job situations.” WSU athletics director Bob Grant could not be reached for comment. The Tigers job opened when Purnell, the former Dayton Flyers coach, took the basketball job at DePaul. According to several internet outlets, Clemson also interviewed Al Skinner, the 57-year-old former Boston College coach, who was fired a little over a week ago. The 41-year-old Brownell has won at least 20 games a season in each of the four years he’s been at Wright State. He took the Raiders to the NCAA Tournament his first year here. Prior to WSU, he was head coach at University of North Carolina-Wilmington four years, had an 83-40 record and took the Seahawks to two NCAA Tournaments. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at the school for eight seasons. His in-laws still live in Wilmington. www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/throughthearch/entries/2010/04/09/wsus_brownell_interviews_at_cl.html?cxtype=feedbot

WAKE FOREST TARGETS COLORADO'S BZDELIK Friday, April 9, 2010 Wake Forest has targeted Colorado head coach Jeff Bzdelik to replace Dino Gaudio. Bzdelik, 57, has been at Colorado for the past three years and spent two seasons in the NBA as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets from 2002-04. He and Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman, a former college baseball coach, have a relationship that dates back to when both were at Northwestern. Prior to taking the Colorado job in 2007, Bzdelik compiled a 50-16 record in two seasons at Air Force from 2005-07 and went to the NCAA tournament. Bzdelik has also been a college assistant at Davidson, Northwestern and UMBC - and has been in the NBA as an assistant and scout for 15 years. Bzdelik would take over a Wake Forest program that has lost three players early to the NBA in the last two seasons – James Johnson, Jeff Teague and this year, Al-Farouq Aminu. community.foxsports.com/goodmanonfox/blog/?pref_tab=blog

Colorado's Bzdelik a candidate at Wake ForestPublished: April 9, 2010 By Dan Collins JOURNAL REPORTER The pace of Wake Forest's hunt for a basketball coach might have accelerated in the last 24 hours, with Jeff Bzdelik of Colorado emerging as a viable candidate. Although those around the program expect nothing to be announced in the next 10 days, a person familiar with the search said Friday afternoon that the new coach might actually be named by Monday. Ron Wellman, the director of athletics who is conducting the search, will attend the annual ACC meetings in Greensboro on Tuesday and Wednesday and the meeting of the Wake Forest board of trustees from Wednesday through Friday. The person familiar with the search said that Bzdelik might indeed be a candidate, as reported earlier this afternoon by Jeff Goodman of Foxsports.com. Bzdelik worked with Wellman at Northwestern from 1981 through 1986, when Bzdelik was an assistant basketball coach and Wellman was the head baseball coach. Also, Bzdelik's daughter Courtney is a student at Wake Forest. Bzdelik was the head coach of the Denver Nuggets from the 2002-03 season through the 2004-05 season, compiling a 73-119 record. He had two stellar seasons as the head coach at Air Force, with records of 24-7 in 2005-06 and 26-9 in 2006-07, but left to tackle the job of turning around a downtrodden program at Colorado. The project has yet to be completed. The Buffaloes were 12-20 overall and 2-13 in the Big 12 in 2007-08, 9-22 and 1-15 in conference play in 2008-09 and 15-16 and 6-10 this past season. Two other names that have been mentioned around the program as possible candidates are Travis Ford of Oklahoma State and Dana Altman of Creighton. www2.journalnow.com/content/2010/apr/09/source-colorados-bzdelik-candidate-wake-forest/

Tigers' search takes a mid-major turnThe Clemson Sports Blog By Greg Wallace Posted April 9, 2010 Hours after Oliver Purnell left for DePaul, Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips promised a national search for his replacement. It appears that search is both national - and encompassing the mid-major ranks. Friday, that search took him 50 miles up Interstate 85. According to CBSSports.com and TigerIllustrated.com, Phillips and associate athletic director Bill D’Andrea interviewed Wofford coach Mike Young for the Tigers’ vacancy. TigerIllustrated also reported that Clemson interviewed Jacksonville University coach Cliff Warren for the position. Warren has led JU to four consecutive winning seasons; the Dolphins were 20-13 this season and have made two straight NIT appearances. Warren was a Georgia Tech assistant under Paul Hewitt from 2000-05. 2009-10 was a breakout season for Young. He led Wofford to a 26-9 record, Southern Conference title and its first-ever NCAA berth; the 13th-seeded Terriers dropped a narrow 53-50 first-round decision to No.4 seed Wisconsin. He was named the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year by collegeinsider.com, beating Butler’s Brad Stevens, among others, for the honor. He is 116-126 in eight seasons at Wofford; he spent 13 years there as an assistant before being named as head coach in 2002. Ironically, he was an Oliver Purnell assistant at Radford in 1988-89; Ron Bradley, Clemson’s interim coach who is also a candidate for the position, took Purnell’s place there and served as the Highlanders’ head coach from 1991-2002. Wofford plays a defense-oriented, 3-point-oriented style, although the Terriers didn’t have a starter over 6-foot-6. That style could change with a taller, more athletic roster at Clemson. He is believed to be the third candidate to interview for the position, joining former Boston College coach Al Skinner and Wright State coach Brad Brownell. When reached by the Dayton Daily News Friday, Brownell would neither confirm nor deny that he had talked with Clemson. Other candidates for the job are believed to include Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart, Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel and Western Kentucky coach Ken McDonald www.independentmail.com/blogs/greg-wallace/2010/apr/09/mike_young/

WSU’s Brownell linked to ACC coaching vacanciesFriday, April 9, 2010 Wright State men’s basketball coach Brad Brownell has been linked to openings at Atlantic Coast Conference schools Clemson and Wake Forest. Contacted Friday, April 9, Brownell wouldn’t discuss a report by CBSsports.com that indicated he was interviewed Thursday by Clemson. “My policy has always been I don’t comment one way or another on job concerns,” he said. “Half the time these reports that come out are wrong.” Asked if this report was wrong, Brownell wouldn’t say yes or no. “I hope you understand,” he said. “I just don’t comment on job situations.” The Clemson job opened up when Oliver Purnell took the job at DePaul. According to The (Charleston, S.C.) Post & Courier, Al Skinner, who recently left Boston College, also interviewed for the Clemson job. The newspaper reported that Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel is at the top of Clemson’s list. Brownell’s name also has been linked to the Wake Forest job. The private university located in Winston-Salem, N.C., fired Dino Gaudio earlier this week. WSU Athletic Director Bob Grant said he talked to a few South Carolina media outlets Friday but had not been contacted by either Clemson or Wake Forest. “I never comment on other teams’ openings,” Grant said. “If I’m doing my job, we have a bunch of coaches other people want.” Wake’s athletic director is Ron Wellman, who grew up in Dayton and graduated from Wilbur Wright High School. Brownell, 41, has a four-year record of 84-45 at Wright State. He led the Raiders to the NCAA tournament in 2007. Prior to taking the WSU job, Brownell spent four years at North Carolina-Wilmington, compiling an 83-40 record with two NCAA tourney trips. His in-laws still live in North Carolina. www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/wright-state-university-raiders/wsus-brownell-linked-to-acc-coaching-vacancies-645334.html

Clemson and WF really worry me, much more than Iowa. I think Billy Donlon would be a very good coach, but I want BB here for a few more years. Anyway I wish something would happen soon, so WSU can get on with recruiting.

Anyway I wish something would happen soon, so WSU can get on with recruiting. I'm frustrated because even if Clemson and WF decide to go with their frunt runners, it just starts another round of Brownell to Colorado or Brownell to Baylor, etc. At some point he needs to shut down the job search this year and focus on being our head coach.

Baylor's Drew latest serious candidate as search heats upBy Travis Sawchik The Post and Courier Saturday, April 10, 2010 CLEMSON -- Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips is believed to have conducted a series of interviews Thursday and Friday, with more possibly coming today as the university continues its search for a new men's basketball coach. Baylor coach Scott Drew spoke with Clemson officials Friday, according to a source. He is believed to be interviewing for the position today along with Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel. The source speculated Drew could be near the top of the list. Another source said Wright State coach Brad Brownell spoke with Clemson officials Friday after a confirmed meeting Thursday. Brownell was reached by The Post and Courier on Friday and was asked about contact with Clemson. "I don't comment either way," said Brownell, who led UNC Wilmington to the NCAA tournament twice in four years before taking over the Wright State program in 2006. Tigerillustrated.com and the Spartanburg Herald Journal reported Friday that Wofford coach Mike Young met with Phillips. In his eighth year at Wofford, Young led the Terriers to 26 wins and a Southern Conference title. Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor also met with Clemson officials Friday. Multiple sources said Friday that Ohio coach John Groce has emerged as a coach of interest for Clemson. Groce, 38, led Ohio to an upset win against Georgetown in the NCAA tournament and was credited with being a key recruiter in bringing together Ohio State's "Thad Five" recruiting class that included Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jr. Ohio University officials declined to comment on whether Groce had been contacted. Former Boston College coach Al Skinner reportedly met with Clemson on Thursday. Whoever the next coach is might have quite a few decisions to make regarding Clemson assistants. A source said Friday departing Clemson coach Oliver Purnell will likely only bring one assistant with him to DePaul in part due to a DePaul mandate, and in part due to pressure from Chicago-area prep coaches who want certain assistants retained. It is critical Purnell have a portion of his DePaul staff with ties to Chicago. As for Clemson players, add Noel Johnson to the list of Tigers on the fence. Johnson is considering transferring, though it is not because of Purnell's departure. Like Devin Booker who had been unhappy playing under Purnell, a source said Johnson was similarly dissatisfied with playing time. Clemson signee Marcus Thornton has asked to be released from his letter of intent, though he is still considering Clemson. www.postandcourier.com/news/2010/apr/10/baylors-drew-latest-serious-candidate-as-search/
