Yesterday Basile drops 20 in a half, tonight Tanner hits the buzzer beater for OSU. Oh what could have been. It was a great/fortunate shot. I surprised myself with how salty I was after watching the end of the OSU game last night. It was his only basket of the game and he's only averaging 4.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 16.6 minutes per game this year at Ohio State. He could be leading the greatest team in WSU history if he had stayed but instead WSU just went 0-2 at home to start conference play. WSU needs him a lot more than OSU does. I know this is how college athletics are going to be from now on but it sucks. We were lucky that Loudon stayed for so long and will be lucky if future Raider greats stay for their entire college careers... And that makes me sad.

Did Tanner Holden make a mistake going to Ohio State? Only he knows so far. I was a little surprised when OSU's coach made a comment in preseason that he thought Holden would really be good in his 2nd year with Ohio State. Ouch, this guy was averaging 20 ppg at WSU, and coming into his 4th year of College Hoops and the OSU coach signaled early on that he was maybe going to be basically a sub.
I do think this Ohio State team may be very talented, but I also wonder if Chris Holtman is not really a great coach. His NCAA tourney record is not super impressive. I also think guys like Holden need to realize they are somewhat dispensable when going to the bigger schools. It's too bad because we know Holden is a really good player.
I like Holden a lot and I often check OSU's box scores to see how he is doing. I feel a little for him, not playing much, but I know it was his dream to play at Ohio State. So I think he's probably ok, but if he ends up just being a bench guy for his two years there it could be a cautionary tale for future stars at mid-majors, which could be a good thing for the Wright States of the world to keep those guys.
The other day I noticed Holden at Ohio State, Malachi Smith at Gonzaga, and Basile at VTech. It's too bad they aren't at WSU, but also impressive to think Nagy recruited all those guys. It shows WSU could be a NCCA Round of 32 or Sweet 16 type of school, but unfortunately it's really hard keeping those guys in today's game.

Yes, I agree, that it is sad that players leave, but in the case of Grant and Tanner they gave us good years and won an NCAA tournament game. I have only watched OSU on a limited basis, but when I have Tanner appears much slower than the rest of the OSU team??? Anyone else notice this?

Whether any transfer made a mistake is most-importantly determined by what they wanted/expected at/from the new school.
Basile is the only one who is a starter...and he isn't the primary "big" at VT from what I've seen...meaning he isn't doing the dirty work that Love did here and Basile had to do here. I think he sees himself as a Forward and not a Center. I don't think he's an NBA-level player...that won't change if he uses his COVID year. Maybe he thinks VT has a shot at the National Championship (NC).
Tanner isn't a starter now. I think he sees himself as a wing and 3pt guy. He wasn't going to play that role here...and I don't think that will work for him at OSU either. He's less of an NBA-level player than is Basile. However, if Tanner were 4" taller he would be an NBA-level player. He probably thinks OSU has a shot at a NC.
My biggest disappointment with those ^ (2) is that the coaches were reportedly caught completely off guard that they were leaving. That's a crazy-bad look for (2) team leaders to do such a thing. I follow those guys and hope they do well and get what they were after. They both may get a shot at a NC and maybe improved their shot at a higher-level, overseas league with the bigger-school exposure. Although with Tanner not playing major minutes that may backfire as he'd be playing 35+ per game here. I think the guys ahead of him are better fits right now than he is...maybe that will change as the season moves along.
Smith is another guy who never left the floor at his previous school and is now a sub...but on a true NC contending team now. I think he is the best NBA prospect of the (3), but those chances are still slim. I think he's a PG but I'm not seeing him playing that at Gonzaga right now. (Disclaimer: I'm not the Xs and Os guru that others on here are.) I don't see the guys ahead of him as being better fits than him right now...he's a really good player. I think his transferring out of here is my biggest transfer-disappointment in WSU history. He played well here and as a true Freshman. To my eye - and with absolutely ZERO insider knowledge - he saw the rope that Jaylon Hall had with the coaches and saw that he wasn't getting such leeway and that moving ahead of Hall wasn't likely no matter how atrocious Hall's play was.
To your point, it IS impressive that Nagy recruited those guys and I believe Nagy's coaching & crew helped both Basile and Tanner develop into such good collegiate players. IMO, neither of those guys were Power 5 prospects when they got here...nor were they in their first two years here. I'm biased in my opinion of Smith. I REALLY liked that guy as a Freshman...but I'm not going to type that I saw him as a prospect for a perennial NC caliber team...although I DID see him as ridiculously better than the guy in front of him.

I was watching Ja Morant the other evening and remembered that the Raiders played against him and the Bill Wampler covered him most of the evening. Has anyone kept track of Bill?

Brad Brownell's Clemson Tigers just lost at Louisville 83-73.
Yes, the same Louisville team we knocked off earlier this season.
