I understand the need to constantly move forward as an institution and that, per the article, this supposedly “would not impact the university’s already troubled budget”, but good lord, given what we’ve just gone through and are currently going though this seems like the last thing we need to be considering at the moment.

I want to start off by saying this is a great idea and something that is really needed. One of the biggest complaints of student's at Wright State is that there isn't enough things to do on campus. (not enough parking is probably their other top complaint). Adding this could really help with the universities turnaround by attracting more kids to Wright State and retaining more of our current student body. Paying for it with a student voted on fee is a smart way to do it for our financially strapped university too. We paid for the Nutter Center this way and it was a great way to get student invested in our basketball program at the time because they literally paid for it. Now the negative of this current initiative is the timing. Morale at the university is is pretty low with the student body due to the recent faculty strike. Students are still rightfully pissed off. Announcing this idea now and asking them to vote on increasing their fees for a new recreational center just weeks after the strike ended seems really stupid to me. I think they should have introduced the idea to students now and asked them to give their feedback on what they want in the recreational center and gauge interest if they would be willing to pay for it with an added fee. I think they should have waited until the fall to ask students to vote on it if they really want students to get behind this. I think they are going to have a hard time getting kids to vote on giving more money to Wright State right now.

This is the best initiative the university could push to increase morale and school spirit and love of the institution. Recreational activities, landscaping, and food are the most important things to students that take them from attending a school for financial and academic reasons to actually liking the institution. Sports obviously are a part of that as well. Too many people attend WSU because it’s just affordable, and things like this help change that. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’ll pass, but I’d love to see it happen!

I actually think it's a smart move right now. They aren't doing a yes or no vote on adding fees right now. I think this is more of a survey asking what type of things they want in the facility and how much they would be willing to pay in an extra fee to pay for it. When they compile that data they will come up with a realistic budget for the project and figure out what the fee on that would be. The real vote will come after that. That vote is probably a year away.

I used to want something similar to what they have at Miami of Ohio. Without swimming and diving not sure I'd be interested but, I wouldn't have a vote and wouldn't interfere with a vote. Just interested if their vision is the same as mine or if the final ideas would make a difference. WSU has been putting sports buildings away from campus, if this is just something for the students to use then I'd make do with what is already available.

Just a thought I wanted to share: I work in the education sector here in China. A delegation from Miami University (Oxford) is coming today to sign an agreement with a high school here to set up a program where students can opt to go directly from this Chinese high school straight into Miami U. A delegation from UC was recently here in the past to do the same thing. International students basically pay twice the fees that domestic American university students do and Chinese students' desire to attend American universities is insatiable right now. Why in the heck am I not seeing a WSU delegation come through eager to sign a similar agreement?

AAUP Wright State University has made a Facebook post regarding their stance on the proposed student recreation center:
AAUP Wright State University:
"Hey Students: Voting started today on Wings regarding the new student recreation center paid for by hundreds of dollars in increased student fees per semester. We encourage you to vote even if it won't impact you and we think it is a #misplacedpriority #yourvoicematters"

Which I totally support and will look forward to using as an alum

This display of apathy is astounding. 18% participation rate. There are gonna be a whole lot of pissed off students who will claim that they never wanted this, yet never bothered to make their voices heard. Glad this passed but I have a feeling this won’t be the end of it.

There are gonna be a whole lot of pissed off students who will claim that they never wanted this, yet never bothered to make their voices heard. Glad this passed but I have a feeling this won’t be the end of it. Not really. It’s been forever but as far as I can remember the percentage of students that voted on adding fees to pay for the Nutter Center was pretty similar. If some students aren’t happy with the results they should have voted. It was online for Christ sake so they could have done it in 30 seconds anytime over the past week. WSU is the biggest state university in Ohio that doesn’t have an independent student rec center. It’s about time this happens and the fee is actually less than the student fees that most other public schools in Ohio charge their students and it won’t go into effect for 2-3 years so it won’t affect most current students. If any of the ones being affected are so against this that they want to leave WSU, I think they will change their mind if they research other Ohio schools and realize all schools have these type of fees to pay for something or other.
