I heard Mortensen will be going back to Denmark to play professionally and that Nagy will be bringing two players that had committed to SDSU. No names, though. Hopefully, we will hear something official soon. If those two players are Jr. College player Julian Walters and incoming freshman Loudon Volbrecht , I will be pleased. Opti Count me in too. That would be great. (Although, I don't think Julian Walters was a SDSU commit.) Stinks to lose Mortensen -- he really came on toward the end of the year. Oh well, not a big surprise though since he asked for his release a few weeks ago. Was hoping he'd pull a Benzinger and stay, but if he's the only good/decent player we lose off last year's roster (in terms of the underclassmen) I'll definitely be happy. As far as we know, all the other good players (Hughes, etc) are staying, right? I know Alstork is staying because I heard Coach Nagy say Alstork and Benzinger will be two of the big pieces to the puzzle the next two seasons.

Julian Walters was not a SDSU commitment when Nagy was there. They didn't even start recruiting him until their new coach took over. SDSU had 2 commitments for next year under Nagy: JUCO SG Andre Wallace and C Loudon Vollbrecht. Walace signed with SDSU and has not asked to be released from his scholarship. Vollbrecht asked for and was released from his LOI.

Is that a possibility, Big D?

Just noticed this post and thought I'd clear some stuff up: The only commit for 2016 while Coach Nagy was at SDSU was Loudon Vollbrecht, who (as already note) has decommitted and is currently exploring his options. I'd think you guys would have a good shot at landing him. Andre Wallace was offered by Nagy and Co. at SDSU, but he didn't commit until after TJ Otzelberger was hired and re-recruited him (I'm assuming Rob Klinkefus, a holdover from Nagy's staff, had a lot to do with it). I think it's safe to say he is not leaving. Julian Walters, as you said, was not offered until the new coaching staff came in at SDSU. Since the offer, however, Sergio El Darwich, a 2016 prep school point guard, has signed with SDSU. Also, Southern Utah grad transfer AJ Hess has decided to transfer to SDSU. Though I can't say for certain, a lot of times scholarship offers are attached to a certain group of players, so it wouldn't surprise me if SDSU has cooled on Walters a bit since the offer. I think he'd be a really nice get for you guys, as the strength of the point guard position really affects how well Nagy's motion offense works.

Thanks for info from the SDSU perspective, Kemo.

Hmm. Sounds like the person I talked to was mis-informed. It was a graduation party, and there was alcohol involved, so it could have been my misunderstanding.
Thanks for clarifying, Big D.
I checked to see if maybe someone in the class of 2017 have verballed, but that does not appear to be the case, either.

That's good news he's visiting though. Great news. I don't see what the excitement is for. We are talking about a walk on that played very little while at Illinois. We do need a pg for next year to split time with Hughes but our real need is at least 2 inside players.

Were you excited about Biggie Minnis when he was recruited? He turned out pretty well. To answer your question, no I wasn't excited by the signing of Minnis last year. He was a journeyman PG who came to WSU and was a backup that came off the bench for us. If you are trying to make a comparison between Minnis and LaTulip I don't think that is going to get me any more excited about this signing. Biggie didn't have great stats at his prior schools before he came to WSU but they completely blow LaTulip's resume out of the water. Biggie was a scholarship player at Texas Tech and Rhode Island before he came to Wright State. He played 1514 minutes in those 3 seasons. LaTulip played a total of 127 minutes in his 3 seasons at Illinois. Biggie scored 300 points and had 161 assists prior to coming to Wright State. LaTulip scored 56 points and had 2 assists in his 3 seasons. Once again, I ask why is anyone excited about this signing?

Guys let's recognize LaTulip for what he is- a 1 year player that will fill a roster spot while Coach Nagy recruits for the 2017 class. LaTulip had good numbers in high school and turned down D1 offers to go to Illinois. Let's give him a chance to be a contributor.

I'm sure it was accidentally, but it sounds like you are the one somewhat downplaying the transfer of LaTulip to WSU. I think he will be a very solid player in the Horizon League. Not a starter, but a very good bench option. Certainly more than a guy who is "filling a roster spot" as you said. He might end up being the team's 6th man ... and a good one.

As I said, he had good HS numbers and turned down offers to play at Illinois. That's also why I encouraged others to give him a chance. The reality of the situation is that he will be a Raider for 1 year, bridging the gap to allow coach to recruit for next year. I don't feel I've downplayed the kid or his potential to see playing time in any way.
