I must be at the acceptance stage because the recruits we are interested in look good. Looks like that 6'8 guy is out the running though as Wisconsin offered him. Not sure why we are waiting on the other offers. The SG we offered looks like he is really athletic.
Any reason they aren't going after power 5/high mid major bench players though?

It seems like a disservice to the team to blindside them like this. For me, it seems to say something about these two players; and I'll just leave it at that. I wish this had unfolded differently. It certainly changes my opinion on how some of this went down. Honestly, I not upset they are leaving. With the way the transfer portal is hurting college basketball I was expecting some of it. I'm just disappointed in the way the 2 handled it. If they would have been honest about it, our coaches would have been more prepared and could have already been on the recruiting trail weeks or months earlier. I know this is upsetting for our fans, but this really hurts Wright State and our coaches. This is our coach's livelihood. If they don't maintain a certain level of success here, we all know they will eventually lose their jobs. If Tanner and Grant really cared about these coaches, they could have at least been honest with them so they could have started the process of replacing them. This also really hurts our athletic department. If you haven't noticed, we were just kicking off a campaign for season ticket sales for next year. With this year's NCAA tournament success, we were making a big push to increase season ticket sales for next year and try to get more corporate sponsors. Selling tickets and getting sponsors when you are returning 99% of your scoring and rebounding from an NCAA tournament team is really really easy. Doing that when you just lost 2 all conference players that make up 50% of your scoring and rebounding really really hurts. They probably just cost the athletic department 400-500K in revenue next year. I thought this timing was very ironic. I was about ready to drop the deposit and saw the Tanner transfer and I stopped myself. I think the renewal is not as going to be a big as they hoped because of these two leaving. Lets see what the new staff can bring in before I decide about next year.

I have thought for a while we could lose up to 3 players. I still do. Good players want to play in and have success in March madness. I do not think it is unreasonable to believe we hit our high water mark this past season. Guys like Holden and basile see time running out for participating in some post season success. They are going to try to grab the brass ring while they still can. I cannot help but wonder if someone planted the thought of a new destination in their heads.
I agree with some who feel the coach needs to adjust his thinking on the transfer portal. What are there, maybe 1000 kids in the portal. We have “relationships” with maybe a dozen or so. A lot of players that we won’t even look at that could help us.
As we attack the transfer portal we need to bring in players who actually make us better, not non contributors. We also need to really up the ante on athleticism in the players we go after. Watching us this year we just seemed pretty unathletic and we struggled against the athletic teams. Sometimes we recruit players who “fit our system” to the detriment of recruiting athletic players.
I think we really need to focus on post players ( 1-2 ). Going into next season counting on Braun and his inexperienced backup is a mistake. It may be too late for that but the aforementioned transfer portal needs to be searched whether we have a relationship with them or not.
I just hope to heck that third shoe doesn’t drop and we lose another key component to our 22-23 team.

In my opinion a lot of this has to do with the Horizon League, it is no longer a league any good player is going to want to spend 4 years at if there is any alternative. Gone are the days when it was threatening to be a top 10 league, now it is struggling to stay out of the bottom 5 and teams are bailing at every chance.

In my opinion it probably has a lot more to do with the paycheck he is going to get from a NIL deal he will get from going to OSU

I don't think this has anything to do with our conference either. Kids are transferring from schools in every conference. I think the number of D1 transfers is over 1100 now. Kids are leaving schools looking for whatever they consider being a better opportunity for them. For someone like James Manns that simply means playing time. For someone like Tanner, I agree with Big D and think it is about the money. Honestly, I think we would have had a better chance to make the NCAAs next year and win a few games if everyone would have returned than Ohio State does next year. They were a middle of the pack Big 10 team this year and they lost their best players. I doubt they even make the tournament next year.

This was kind of the perfect storm in a bad way for Wright State. But some of it is because of the success they had which you can see as a positive.
But you had the free extra Covid year, the new rule allowing a player to transfer without having to sit out a year, two guys who both had great seasons averaging almost 20 points a game, an incredible run at the end of the season, a great showing against Bryant in the play in game, and respectable showing against Arizona (even though not Holden's best game), and those two guys were very attractive for big programs.
If Holden and Basille averaged say 14-16ppg, Wright State lost to Cleveland State, there was no Covid, no transfer, Basille and Holden aren't going to sit out a year to transfer for what would have been their Senior year. So the success of Wright State and these players created this opportunity, but the circumstances more so. I'm not going to get into whether they lied or not, but I can't blame them too much for transferring with 2 years left to make their mark. I think especially Holden, who I believe was recruited to play football for Ohio State, I understand that desire to want to go there since he has some connection there.
I think Holden can play in the Big 10. I think the Big 10 is overrated every year now. No teams in the elite 8. Holden is crafty and I think the Big 10 is not super athletic, so he should be good. From afar I hope he does well.
Unfortunately at this point I'd be surprised if Calvin stays. I hope for Calvin he realizes he can really be a star at Wright State though if he stays, and grow his game as a scorer and passer. It's not what we would have envisioned, but it'd be fun to see Calvin, Finke, Hubrigste (?), Welage, Norris, Braun as a core come back. I think they could be solid, a 20 win team if things go right.

I’d be surprised if Trey left at this point. He’s been pretty active on Twitter liking WSU things. Hopefully that’s a sign he’s coming back.
