As I type this baseball coaches across the country are busy putting their 2022 schedules together. I thought it would be interesting to put a list of schools that are in the Top 100 or close to it that are within driving distance of Dayton. I define driving distance as about six hours or less. Just to refresh your memory our #RaiderGang finished the 2021 season with an RPI of 33.
I will start with the usual suspects which are the Big Boys from the Big boy Conferences and then add in all the others.
Notre Dame 5 Pitt 52 UofL 70 Michigan 94 Ohio State 102 Tennessee 6 Vandy 3 Kentucky 66
Indiana State 38 Southern Illinois 82 Central Michigan 49 Ball State 50 Southeast Missouri State 86 Charlotte 34
There are just 14 schools, some years there might be 25 schools close by in the Top 100.
If we expand to the Top 150, that about doubles the number of schools. If the Raiders play a schedule of these types of schools, it will toughen them up and give them a good RPI which helps in most years in the Regionals seeding.

I ran into a baseball coach from Indiana State today. I told him I would love to see the Sycamores play the Raiders since both programs are Top 40 RPI programs. He is not the coach that does the scheduling but he said he doubted it would happen. He said the MVC scheduling guidelines encourage teams to avoid playing teams in crappy baseball conferences because a few conference losses would sink that team's RPI. I told him the Raiders have been under 80 in the RPI the last six years. He said he didn't think it would matter. If what he says is accurate, it is amazing we can get Ohio State to play at WSU, but an MVC team wouldn't. Maybe this scheduling process is harder and more complicated than I thought.

Runt, I can see the idea of not playing teams from crummy leagues if they are crummy programs. But a crummy league does not change the fact that we had an rpi in the 30’s. Maybe coach thinks we are too good for them.
This policy may affect our ability to schedule basketball games with the mvc as well. We are a pretty crummy bball league too. That would be unfortunate though I do not remember a ton of games with the mvc, maybe one per season or less. we do a lot more with the Mac , maybe due to proximity,
As far as osu playing us I think the fact that we are a pretty solid rpi opponent for them is one thing. Also I am sure they can beef up their rpi with their big ten league schedule. I wonder where our typical baseblall rpi would fall in the big ten??
Hope you will be getting down here for the Naples tournament. I’ll throw a pork butt in the smoker and we’ll have pulled pork for lunch one day.

I will be down in Lee County for the entire month of November and that will include the short drive down to Naples to catch the Raiders.

Wright States 2023 recruiting class is ranked at 56. Xavier is ranked at 51, Ohio State 66, and Indian is at 45. But that ranking is deceptive because the more players signed the higher the ranking. I think the key number might be the average player ranking. WSU average player ranking is 4.4 Xavier is at 2.75 Indiana is at 6.20 Ohio State 3.75 Some of the better programs are at 8.0 to 9.0. So, our #RaiderGang seems to perform above the player ratings. www.perfectgame.org/rankings/Recruiting/Rankings.aspx?g=2022

When I look at the eight players that our #RaiderGang signed two things stood out; first and foremost, all eight are from Ohio and second, none were from Cincy....which probably has the greatest concentration of baseball studs in Ohio I think not having any Cincy players is an anomaly.
The teams that Wright State competes against for seeding in the Regionals mostly are national recruiters. I don't see Wright State getting a big enough recruiting budget anytime soon to be considered a "national recruiter?" If #RaiderGang can get to the CWS, then getting some good players outside the Tri-State becomes more doable. With player evaluations services like Perfect Game, it is not that hard to find the best players, it just comes down to getting them to come to Wright State. It is certainly easier to get good players in the Midwest to come to WSU, than it was 10 years ago. I remember talking to former Indiana Coach Tracy Smith a few years ago and he told me he went out to California after all the best players had signed with Western teams and he signed the left-overs. He prospered doing that. As #RaiderGangs wins, grows and gets some national success I can see Wright State doing that, probably in the South or West of Indiana.
Just for kicks I pulled East Carolina's roster. #RaiderGang beat them a few years ago. They are a little higher on the baseball pecking order that WSU, but not that much. They have players from NC, VA, WI, PA, CO, MO, MD, NY, FL and IL. WSU has players from Canada, OH, IL, VA, MI, IN and KY. A Big 10 baseball program would probably have players from 14 or 15 states.
Wright State doesn't have a problem in the World that winning can't solve. Right now, I think Wright State can get their share of top-tier talent in Ohio and more wins should mean that WSU's recruiting area should continue to grow.
