Ball game. The difference really was Marshall's entire team finished at the rim all night, and the only player we had that could finish at the rim fouled out with 4 minutes to play. So many hasty shots we completely whiffed on under the basket. Make half of those and we have a double digit win on our resume. Holden and Calvin got swatted at least a dozen times total.
Just a wasted home and home in my opinion. We were in both games leading last year for 75% of the game, tonight about 50%, and just couldn't finish either game. We need to win some of these home and homes to move this program forward.

Disappointing loss but glad to see Grant and Tanner playing so well. Norris appears to be a baller too. Different result if our other starters contributed.

Tonight's loss stings a bit more after realizing what were up against next. Yikes.

Where are Noel and Braun? They both are over 6'8" and 235 pounds. Size is usually a good thing in basketball. I don't know for sure on either case but my guess is that Noel is under Covid protocols since he hasn't been on the bench the last 2 games. He is still posting about the team on social media so he is still part of the team. My guess is that Braun is most likely red-shirting.

Do we "homer" other teams in the Nutt? It sure doesn't seem like...at least not to the degree of last night. That said, they were much more aggressive and physical than we were..a road recipe for disaster. Marshall was pounding Basile and most-times it went uncalled...even after the hack resulted in an awkward shot or turnover.
drop said this earlier and I'll say I'll add to it here...our defense could not have been any worse if Manns were in there missing his assignments along with nearly everyone else. I can only wonder how many of the missed 333 we took (8 for 22) that could have been makes by Manns
I saw absolutely nothing special defensively from our two transfer bigs. I keep waiting for Calvin to grow from what I thought I saw of him as a FR...but as a PG, Norris already looks better. Finke had a ridiculously off-night (2-12 and missed all four non-333 shots)...I think Huibregtse should have gotten more of his minutes to see if he could score.
I think we are a better team than Marshall...but we couldn't get/keep it going without a bad shot or giving up a putback dunk or alley-oop ish bucket. That was a road game - against a little name recognition - that we let slip away.

3 takeaways after the game:
1. Really liking the addition of Riley Voss. Tough, big-bodied guy who embraces setting screens. Went back and replayed the "illegal" screen he was called for in the paint crushing the Marshall player. I admittedly do not know screening rules to a 'T' but he was definitely set. Like the commentator said, when a screen is set down there it is often called a foul since it occurs so infrequently. Also can splash a 3 when open.
2. It is going to be tough seeing Wilbourn or Voss playing the '5' when Basile sits. I have faith in the team defense to overcome the height disadvantage to a point...but it really feels like a massive disadvantage.
3. Keaton Norris showed me he's already ready to run the show after his first game vs a D-I opponent. I feel like the offense flowed much better when he was at PG. With that said my patience is running thin on Trey Calvin. He provides great defense (so I'm told, not great at evaluating that myself) but after starting this season 6-for-21 his career shooting numbers are the following:
2-Point FG: 39% 3-Point FG: 29% Overall FG: 33%
I've wanted and expected Calvin to break out, and it is still early in this JR year, but to this point in his career he's been a liability shooting the ball.

Man Grant Basille was incredible. He was in the zone! That was fun to watch. I like Norris as well, he looks like maybe the Point Guard of the future. Would Trey Calvin be better in a shooting guard role? I thought he was known for being a really good 3 point shooter out of high school.
You see the talent difference when we play Marshall. They just have more and bigger athletes. Wright State is solid, but it's hard to tell how good until Basille has just some normal games. I think Finke will shoot better in the future, and Calvin hopefully shoots better too.
Fun game overall. I don't think a bad loss at all. Hopefully this will prepare them for their matchup with Purdue.
