From the article: “The past four years, we’ve been No. 1 or No. 2 in the league in defense. We’re not doing anything differently. We’ve got to decide we can be a better defensive team without Loudon (Love),” Nagy said. “It’s just a mindset. It’s how you view yourself. (The Vikings) view themselves as players and confident. Our guys are tiptoeing around.”
I think that sums up Nagy's problem. He thinks our poor defense is just due to our mindset. He doesn't see the holes in his roster as part of the problem. We played very soft vs CSU. They played very physical ball and we didn't. That is definitely part of the problem but we also just don't have the athletes at the guard spot either and Nagy needs to admit that to himself and figure out how we are going to compensate for it.

We know that...and that is the problem. I call it "principle of the matter coaching"...we are gong to do it my way or no way at all. I really hope Nagy snaps out of this mindset and sees that he can't do "it" his way right now. Figure it out with what you brought.

Honestly I am starting to look forward to the end of Nagy's tenure here. He's stubborn and he recruited this mismatched set of players. Some talent here but the sum is less than the parts.

Honestly, I think you should start following another team if that is how you feel. Nagy isn't going anywhere unless he decides to leave on his own. He has been the most successful coach in WSU history and he has a big contract that we couldn't buy out even if Bob Grant was dumb enough to want to buy out. There isn't a chance in hell he is getting fired for having a down year. I'm with Big D. I don't think there is any way we don't finish in the top 3 in the HL this year. Like everyone else, I am not happy with the results on the court so far this year. I'm not happy that we didn't utilize our last scholarship on a scoring guard last spring but I also know that we lost 2 assistant coaches last spring which really hurt our ability to find and sign that guard. I think they did a really good job signing 2 good recruits in the early signing period and look forward to seeing what we add in the late signing period.

Nagy is a good coach. He has recruited some good players for the Raiders. He is not a great coach. He sometimes expects a round player to fit into a square hole. The great coaches will design and use offenses and defenses that your players fit into. He will lose to good coaches with good players because they will have an offense to beat the man to man defense and they will play some zones against his offense and be slowed down. I think he is still coaching in basketball of 10-15 years ago. The game has speeded up and it is dfficult for 7 players to still have high energy at end of half and the game. We also need a coach who is willing to take a good player out of the game when struggling. Give them the opportunity to watch from the sidelines and maybe go back in more relaxed and play up to their ability.

IMHO, I think if any of “us” are questioning and second guessing the record and ability of someone with 500+ career wins, we might want to look inward and realize how full of shit we are. Talk about being out of our element: some of y’all need to take a step back and a deep breath. LOL
Everything looks easier when you’re standing on the outside. It’s a funk and we’ll get out of it and best of all, we’ll learn from it.

As far as I’m concerned being just a fan of the team and alum of the school, Nagy can stay here until he retires. I’m pretty disappointed in the way this year is going, but I don’t think the beginning of one season erases the last few years. Might be a bit of an overreaction.

I loved Ralph Underhill but you are delusional if you think his achievements as a coach at Wright State are anywhere even close to what Nagy has done since he has been here. Underhill coached Wright State for 9 seasons as a D1 coach. We were independent the first 4 years, then we were in the Mid Con (SL) for 3 years, then the MCC (HL) for his final 2 seasons. As a D1 coach, he had 7 winning seasons and 2 losing seasons. He won 20+ games twice. He never won a regular season conference championship. He had 1 post season appearance going to the NCAAs. His overall record was 147-109. His conference record was 28-22 in the Mid Con and 14-16 in the MCC. This is Nagy's 6th season at Wright State. He had winning seasons his first 5 years here. He has won 20+ games 4 times. He has won the regular season conference championship 3 years in a row. He has 3 post season invites, 1 NCAA and 2 NIT (we didn't get to compete in 2020 due to Covid). His overall record at Wright State is 111-55. His conference record is 70-24.

I am smart enough to know that every coach we ever had has more basketball smarts in their little pinkie than I do in my whole brain. I would never question our coach’s strategy. I also do not question player playing time. Coaches see them every day in practice and know who should be playing. well maybe the Marcus may situation, but that is all.Believe it or not I am not much concerned about gpa and grad rates as long as we do not get into that penalty situation.
I am interested in performance and results on the court. And of course that leads to disagreements about what we should be doing as a program. Big d cited a bunch of results. And I would agree with all of it. So if winning 20 wins per season floats your boat you have every right to be happy. If beating a bunch of pretty crummy teams in a league that has deteriorated badly the past15 years or so, ditto. But that is not where I personally am at.
I want to be able to turn the tv on 10” into our game with Purdue or uc and see us still in the game competing with them. I do not want to watch the scores on espn and see us blown out by 40-50 points. That is truly embarrassing . Truth is one of the better div ii teams would have given them a better game. 30+ years into div i and we still cannot compete with those teams. I see mid majors competing with these teams all the time, but not wsu.
I want to see my team competing in the ncaa on a regular basis, not once per decade. As our league got worse and worse you would think at some point we would have become the dominant force, but first nku kept us from doing that and no w it looks like csu is doing it. Don’t know who is next.
I would like to see us thinking, planning and scheduling like we are intent on capturing an at large bid should we not win the tourney. So far that is not something we have come close to. imho, we just completed a 2-3 year window where we had a chance to accomplish something. We had solid post play and a pretty good point guard, two key ingredients to success, and we accomplished nothing.
For years I have argued that this program is underperforming, and despite all the data big d provided, I still think so.

Last point about the fan base, how did we get crowds over 6,000 for most games in the 1990's! Wright State used to give out a crazy amount of tickets just to get fans in the stands back then. At one point in time we averaged over 8000 fans for the season. Maybe 3500-4000 of them were paying customers.

If the program would have continued to develop the way we thought it would back then, those free tickets would have turned into paying customers. Unfortunately, history has proved differently. I even thought at one point that WSU should add football to their sports. I was excited at the thought of spending a Saturday afternoon on campus watching the green and gold on the gridiron. Now that seems like such a silly idea since we currently don't even have enough sports programs to remain div. I. Sports just doesn't seem to be a priority at WSU. Years ago I sat on an alumni/fan board at WSU and we tried to come up with ways to improve the gameday experience for basketball. It seemed like for every idea we came up with there was a reason why it couldn't be done. Whether it was WSU vs. the Nutter Center, or administration vs. athletics, or the halftime entertainment vs. the dance team, it just seemed that the various groups didn't work well together. We used to come to the games for the entire experience. We would eat at the concession stands, cheer along withe the cheerleaders, and enjoy the halftime entertainment. That experience is pretty much all but gone at this point. Most of the concession stands are closed, the food is terrible, the cheerleading program barely exists, the luxury boxes are dark, and there is no halftime entertainment. I understand that many of those issues are due to the financial problems the university has been forced to deal with but it seems like they were declining way before the financial constraints started. I will always support WSU athletics, just like everyone on this message board, unfortunately we are in a declining minority. Let's hope WSU can turn things around and bring some excitement back to athletics.
