This new system is brutal.
I know it's been discussed especially during the rollout but having it come to fruition and practically gutting the team is so difficult.
I don't know what the solution is but stuff like this is going to make winning in the tournament at the mid/low major level so difficult.

The deck was already stacked against mid-major programs, and now it's only gotten worse with the no-sit rule. Good mid-major programs are like the Reds, just farming good players for better (power 6) teams. It isn't something we've really dealt with at this extent, but Grant & Tanner are going to get much better exposure at the p6 level, and if they can get serious minutes, it's life changing for them. Great for THEM, but awful for the betterment of our team and it's ability to win in the short term.

Ouch. I really thought Tanner would stay one more season, graduate, then maybe use the extra year of eligibility to grad transfer for the exposure.
I thought the team would still be very good without Grant, but I don't want to think about it without Tanner.
Brotherhood over basketball...

Try to operate with that from an administrative or coaching angle has got to be absolutely brutal, but it’s right from a moral perspective.

I don't disagree with what you're saying about how much it helps the players but it sucks for schools like ours. I wish there was a better solution that's fair for everyone but I don't think it exists/would ever be implemented.

So what is the plan now? Not feeling optimistic at all now. The good news is the HL still sucks so even a complete overhauled roster will would be a top 3 team. But at this point I bet Calvin and Finke leave. I was getting excited we could get a better seed and make a run in the tournament. Seems like if this keeps happening we will just be lucky to make the tournament.

Even if WSU was in the MVC I don't think that would have changed what Grant and Tanner did so a conference change won't be cure everything or even cure some things. This is the reality of a low-major school and it sucks. We got spoiled by Loudon Love staying as long as he did. As great as things felt a few weeks ago they feel the total opposite right now.

Damn. Brutal. Agree with the general vibe of everyone here. I get the transfer portal for the sake of the kids having freedom to go where they want. But it sure makes it tough to stay invested in college athletics as a fan. Of course I'll always root for whoever's in the Green and Gold but the player movement now is starting to resemble professional sports which kills part of what I love about college athletics.
We need to make sure we are using the portal in the same way and stealing the best talent from low majors (lower than us) or D2 schools. Pluck some good verteran talent from other schools each year if we are going to hope to compete year in and year out.

Everyone will just have to adjust to the new normal. Granted Murray State is going through a coaching change, but pretty much their entire team is now in the transfer portal. It looks like our coaching staff is going after several D2 players. This is likely another thing we will see more of.
It's tough to be optimistic. I put down my deposit for season tickets after the promotion was announced yesterday and now I'm kind of regretting it. As long as no one else enters the portal I can remain somewhat optimistic. A number of good players are returning. Alex H will return from injury. Brandon Noel could be a breakout player and I'm very excited to see the freshman. The staff could also land an impact transfer or 2 or 3.

Best of luck to Tanner. I will be surprised if Trey leaves and same with tim. They have an opportunity to really become the go to guys. Maybe I'm just hoping.
How good are the incoming freshman? Are they going to be able to be impact guys like Grant Benzinger and Malachi Smith or more projects?
There is still talent on this roster and I think WSU still has the best coach in the league. But this is still deflating.

We need an immediate impact transfer without any question. The one kid from Columbus that was posted over in the recruiting thread looks like a bigger stronger Tanner.
We're looking at a team chocked full of good guards and very little up front. I've said it before and others have reiterated it, Braun has great upside, but he's not a plug in 30 minute a night guy right now, and I don't believe Noel to be either. I think we risk a big regression next season without a home run in the portal at the PF position, and I'd really prefer 2 good options with the scholarships just coming available.

I hate to see what’s happened to mid major basketball. For years I’ve been preaching to my now 14 year old Raider fan the best part of following a team like Wright State is watching the players develop, knowing that most players will be around for their entire scholarship, seeing their growth and the connection through those years is one that’s much different than the one-and-done players that frequent the majors. To me it’s been about growth as a team and a fan base family: something you don’t get when players jump to the nba after a single season.
I suppose it’s a sign of the times. The NCAA isn’t what it once was and a new generation is constantly looking around for what’s next even when the best path seems to be the one they’re on. I wish them success but I worry their constant need for “the next” is eroding character and integrity, a few traits clearly missing for so much of society anymore.
A new norm perhaps, but certainly not an improvement in my eye.

On the bright side of things, if this is the new normal, we’ve got two guys likely transferring to bigger schools following a guy that’s playing in the g-league from the year before. If someone is looking to make it to a P6 school, but isn’t getting the interest, WSU looks like a pretty good place to build and improve.
