I said it earlier in this thread that I hoped all our returning players really looked at what they had here and what they would be giving up if they left. I assume Grant and Tanner are looking at going to a P6 school as a chance to get more NIL money and a chance to get more exposure to NBA scouts for their future. I wish them nothing but success, but I think they are both making huge mistakes and a history of HL transfers to P6 schools over the year backs that up. All conference HL guys go to P6 schools and become role players over and over again. They do not become stars and I don't think a single one has gone onto becoming an NBA draft pick at their next school. Many HL guys that honed their craft in the HL have gone on to play pro ball in the NBA or overseas.
Grant is being recruited pretty hard by Notre Dame. If he ends up there, he will cash in on some short-term NIL benefits, but he has a better chance to develop into a professional basketball player here. Notre Dame is going to play in a lot more games where NBA scouts are going to be present then there will be at Wright State. I don't think that helps his pro chances if he is coming off the bench at Notre Dame when he could be starting and playing a ton of minutes here. Grant played 33 minutes a game this year. He was allowed to take 496 shots, including 138 three point attempts. That is roughly 14 shots a game, including almost 4 three point attempts. Does anyone think he will get 33 minutes a game at Notre Dame and be allowed to take 14 shots/4 three pt attempts per game there? He has a chance to develop his game a lot more here and then showcase himself playing major minutes. He just isn't going to get that chance at a P6 school. The same can be said of Tanner. He averaged 35 minutes a game and he took 491 shots. I don't see him starting at a P6 school and even if he does, he isn't going to get the minutes or allowed to take anywhere near as many shots as he was at WSU. I hope they are happy with their decision at the end of the day, but I don't think it is going to end the way they want for either of them.
In regards to Wright State, this completely screws us. We aren't going to be able to replace 2 All HL players with HS recruits or portal players we are going to have a chance with. We can still sign some good recruits and have a good year next year. If everyone would have stuck around, we had the talent to make a real run in the tournament next year. I just don't see that happening now.

I know we don't know what the 2022-23 roster looks like now, but I believe the fan base needs to show up and support the program. We should validate the success of the past seasons and show our loyalty to our returning players and coaches by renewing season tickets. I still have faith that this staff will bring success this upcoming season.

Of the two, the one that makes me scratch my head is Tanner. He had a real chance to leave as the all time leading scorer at a solid DI program with a proud tradition and solid fan base. That would break a record that has stood nearly 40 years. There are plenty of role players at great P6 schools and even more starters averaging 8-10 pts a game at .500 P6 schools. As Big D pointed out, that type of situation is very likely for both. Frankly, this makes me as a fan and alum not only value Loudon more, but also players like Dashuan, Drew Burleson, Vaughn Duggins, Grant Benzinger, and going back to the core group that led the team to it's first NCAA berth. I really hope Trey and Tim return. I think they both have a chance to have great seasons. Trey I think can really have a good chance at HL player of the year if his play the second half of the season carries over.

Finke has already transferred once, so if he leaves he will have to sit out a year before he can play again.

Well, we have 3 open scholarships now. It would be nice to read some reports of our staff making offers to recruits. There have been a lot of new threads started for recruits but none of them have an offer yet. I don't know what the hell our staff is waiting for.

The big caveat here is if Grant does end up at Notre Dame, he has the chance to get his Masters for free at one of the premier institutions in the country. If that's his rationale for leaving, then more power to him. That's the kind of logic I can get behind and is truly the best thing for his future. But if it's anything basketball related, then I agree with Big D 1000%. I said it earlier in this thread that I hoped all our returning players really looked at what they had here and what they would be giving up if they left. I really hope our guys aren’t leaving for NIL opportunities elsewhere. I just can’t believe there will be significant money available (even for top low/mid major talent like our guys) that would offset the long-term financial gain of developing further here and enjoying a long professional career earning money.
That said, has there been any movement on some sort of collective being set up to support Wright State’s NIL opportunities? Just throwing random numbers out but there’s probably a big difference for a college kid between earning $0 to stay at WSU or earning $20k elsewhere compared to earning $5k here and $20k elsewhere. If we can at least get them something it probably makes it easier to stay.

It won’t take much to win a conference championship in the Horizon. We Just need another big guy and we will probably be contenders. Anyone know what offers Tanner had?

I was curious on Grant Basile and his 3 pt shooting. He took the third most on the team (only 20 behind Trey Calvin) and made only 28%. I knew he took more 3s but it really seemed to have crowded out more valuable possessions. Those 3pt attempts will be redistributed to guys with much higher 3pt averages like Trey (38%), Norris (38%), Welage (34%) and Finke (33%). Also, hopefully a much improved Huibregtse will get his share of makes. The team's 3pt average this year of 33% should be closer to 38-40% next year, which will help offset the scoring loss of Tanner and Grant. So even as currently constructed, the lineup still would have very good offensive punch, assuming Braun makes the type of sophomore leap we saw from Loudon and Grant, and Noel is healthy. And this is before any potential impact transfers or accounting for the two incoming freshman. Not saying the team won't miss Grant and Tanner, especially on the rebounding end, but at least in terms of the offense the impact may not be as significant or felt at all.

This is our current roster for next year based on the WSU athletics website. We have 3 scholarships available. From all the new names popping up on the recruiting board, it looks like we are going after a PF, SF, and SG. I hope we are able to sign 3 transfer portal or JUCO guys to give us some more experience.
Seniors: Trey Calvin CJ Wilbourn Tim Finke RS
Juniors: Andrew Welage
Sophomores: Keaton Norris AJ Braun Alex Huibregtse RS Brandon Noel RS
Freshmen: Logan Woods Drey Carter

I agree with some of this--the current roster can more easily fill the void left by Basile. The void left by Holden is another story. There are plenty of capable 3-point shooters on the roster, but who can drive to the basket and finish or draw the foul? Tanner made 221 free throws this past season. The rest of the team made 301. Grant accounted for another 131 makes, so Tanner and Grant combined for 67% of the made free throws. Throw in Tanner's rebounding, the cuts he made, and all the little things he did, I think we are going to miss him greatly. The 2 freshmen will help, but this team desperately needs some athletic playmakers.

Shots are going to have to be divided more evenly this year among multiple players. We are going to need more people trying to drive. Finke did a great job of driving in the Arizona game in the NCAAs. Welage showed that ability when he was playing more aggressive later in the year. I agree though, we need to bring in 1-2 guys that can create their own shot.

He showed later on the year he can take anyone off the dribble, including Arizona. And he's an 85% ft shooter. He still needs to be smart about it, but I think he'll help fill some, but not all, of that void in numbers of FT. This Mak Manciel good also fill some of that in terms of his a ability to drive from his highlight tape.
