So happy to hear that Alex is doing well, and looking good this preseason. His floor spacing will be huge! Amari and Trey should be able to get in the lane with ease if he and Finke are hitting shots.

RIP to Professor Wise. So glad I had an opportunity to be in one of his classes. I remember he was talking about appealing names for restaurants and he gave an example "Gordies Rusty Spoon". Odd to say that was 12 years ago but still remember his class! Just the best, he will be missed.

When Brandon came in as a true freshman, the plan was to red-shirt him and develop him (like Nagy likes to do for most of his freshmen). He impressed the coaching staff enough when he arrived on campus that they reversed course and planned to play him. He would have been Lou and Grant's primary back up that year before he suffered that ACL injury. I saw Brandon play a dozen times in high school. I really liked his game back then when he was still raw. He was a guard up until his freshman or sophomore year until he had a big growth spurt. He really does have guard like skills in the way he handles the ball, passes, and shoots. He is a really good outside shooter and had a solid inside game too. The DDN keeps trying to point out that Brandon didn't have any other D1 offers when he committed to Wright State. That is very misleading. He committed to us very early in the process. If he would have waited until after his senior year of high school, I think he would have had his pick of mid-major programs interested in him. He has had 2 years to learn the game from our coaches and has had the benefit of working against Lou, Grant, and now AJ Braun and Blake Sisley. I really cannot wait to see how far he has come since his high school days.

With roughly 1 month until the season tips off how is everyone feeling about the upcoming year of horizon league basketball? I think we can all agree Calvin, Davis, and Finke are one of if not the best trio of guards in the league but who else starts? Braun and Sissley with Noel, Welage, and Alex H coming off the bench? We all know that Nagy won't play more than 8 so that kicks out the 2 incoming Freshman plus CJ Wilbourn. Finally, who scares you the most....YSU, Oakland, PFW, or NKU?

I saw one outlet pick Youngstown State to win the league. I think their best finish in 20+ Horizon years was 3rd in 2007. They've done a good job there but until I see it no way will I pick them to win.
I saw another outlet pick WSU to finish sixth which is also insane. There is no chance WSU isn't in the top half of the league. I think the floor for WSU is fourth.
Curious to see how the conference coaches vote later this month on how their predictions.
Would love to see Coach play 9-10 players this year. Feels like WSU has the depth.

I saw another outlet pick WSU to finish sixth which is also insane. It really isn’t that insane. We weren’t good last year. We finished 4th in a very bad HL in the regular season. If you visited the board before our conference tournament the overwhelming sentiment on the board was that last season was a bust. We got hot at the right time to win the HL tournament and our first round NCAA game. That turned our season into a success. We lost 2 All conference players who accounted for 60% of our scoring and rebounding last year. No one knows how our new guys are going to do for us this year. We are all optimistic that we are going to have a good year but I completely understand why people outside the program don’t think we are going to be very good. I like the fact that we aren’t getting a lot of love by the preseason publications. It is just another thing to help motivate our team. In regards to our lineup, Nagy keeps talking about playing small and using 4 guards in his media interviews. I don’t quite understand that thought process when you have 3 really good big men in a conference without very many good big men. I expect him to experiment with multiple rotations throughout out OOC schedule and he probably won’t settle on his starting lineup until HL play starts. I really hope we go 9 deep this year and use 2 bigs most of the time with periods of 4 guards on the court in certain situations. I think that gives us our best chance at success. If we go 4 guards all the time I think we will get killed on the boards and that 6th place finish could become a reality.

I left out Keaton Norris on my post last night, Nagy loves him and I'm sure he will be getting playing time as well. 9 deep is possible and would help keep others fresh.

Would love to see 9-10 players play well enough to get consistent minutes.
To the previous discussion about expectations I believe in the coach to put it together enough to finish in the top half at least. Nagy hasn't finished outside the top 5 as a head coach since 2008-09. I'm not the type of person to say I would do something dramatic to emphasize how much I believe something but I would make a significant wager that WSU finishes in the top 5. Expectations are definitely different this year compared to the last three.
