I always wanted WSU to go to the MAC but it'll probably never happen and they'd probably actually struggle there as the MAC seems to have improved. Never gonna happen. We don't sponsor D1 football, which every MAC member does. Not to mention they've got a nice even 12 members and have them logically split into two divisions. The only two leagues that really make decent geographical sense are the OVC (which is in shambles with a ton of teams moving in and out over the last two years), and the MVC (which has a history of poaching Horizon members), though the Summit may come into play down the line...who knows. (Maybe we move this to the conference expansions sub).

Big d, I agree 100% with 09. Nobody knows who regular season champs of these crappy leagues are and nobody cares. The goal is the dance and if we do not make it we have failed to reach our goal whether we finished first or ninth in the regular season. And the fact that a program that was div ii 10 or so years ago has more appearances in the ncaa tournament in their brief stint in div i hoops than we have had over that same 8-9 years is a real indictment on our program.
I appreciate the euphoria that developed over beating Bryant . I watched it and enjoyed it. Our first ncaa tournament win!! But I think a bit of a reality check is in order. We were a 16 seed playing another 16 seed. In essence a playoff to determine who the worst 16 seed was. Not exactly how I envisioned our first tourney win coming. I am not saying it was meaningless but it was close. Trumpeting it as some evidence of the development of our program is just a bit deceptive.
The fact that the hl has gotten worse and worse and we have failed to step up as the clear premier program in the league is telling. First it was butler and when they left raider fans were excited that it was now our turn. But then valpo joined and I think they had more ncaa tournament appearances than we did. They left and a brand new , just turned div i program came in and since they have been here I think they have outdanced us , I think 4-2.
One final thought. During the season I sometimes look at the rpi or the Sagarin or the Ken Pom or even the NET. When I look at the top 100 teams there usually 45-50 of them are mid majors. Mid majors can build quality programs. I would bet that few mid majors have facilities better than ours, and many of them draw way fewer fans than we do. Yet we seldom build our program into a top 100 program. There is no reason we cannot be that , we just need to expect it and do it!

The goal is the dance and if we do not make it we have failed to reach our goal whether we finished first or ninth in the regular season. That is complete and utter BULL SHIT. If no one else does, our fan base still cares who wins the regular season and we celebrated it each time. As negative at 09 is a good portion of the time, if you take a look at his twitter feed you will clearly see he spent a great deal of time celebrating those regular season championships too. I appreciate the euphoria that developed over beating Bryant . I watched it and enjoyed it. Our first ncaa tournament win!! But I think a bit of a reality check is in order. I think I can speak for 99% of our fanbase when I say no one cares how you envisioned our first NCAA win would be and that it didn't live up to your expectations. It WAS our programs first NCAA win and it WAS the first NCAA win for any HL team since Butler left. If you still lived in the area, you would have seen the impact that win had on our fanbase and community. It has brought out some true pride in our school. There has been one hell of a lot more vocal Wright State fans proudly wearing their Raider gear in the community since we won that game. I cannot think of the last place I have gone to locally this entire year where I didn't see at least 1 person wearing some of our gear. That was unheard of 20, 10, even 5 years ago. If you think that victory was "close to meaningless", you are clueless. Wright State's basketball program has not achieved the level of success any of us want for it, but we have had some major setbacks along the way: Underhill being fired for shoplifting, Biancardi being fired for breaking NCAA rules at his previous job, the school going into a financial crisis and having to eliminate sports. All of those things have set the program back and it is also the reason I remain a faithful Raider's fan. Because no matter how many times we have been knocked down, we refuse to stay down on the mat. We get back up and fight. This year did not live up to what any of us hoped it would be. Nagy has a winning track record here and at his previous job. I am hopeful that he is going to learn from this season and get the program back on track next year. I AM a Raider fan and will always root for our success. I sure in the hell won't mock our achievements like you two.

That First Four win last year sure was something. I couldn't believe the number of people in WSU gear that attended. I wish more of those people went to games at the Nutter Center.
I don't live that close to WSU so it is exciting to hear that people are wearing the gear more often.
Another First Four win would be huge for our program and local pride (and I would have loved it after this year's regular season) but I have dreams of WSU putting together an amazing regular season and competing for a 12 or 13 seed. That feels really far away right now but having a regular season like that with a winnable round of 64 game is where I would guess a lot of us would like to see the program.

I think fans can agree to disagree on some of these conversations. I can see both sides a bit. The win over Bryant was an great moment in Wright State basketball history. I think particularly because of the first 4 being in Dayton. If Wright State beat Bryant in the First 4 in Omaha, Nebraska it wouldn't carry nearly the excitement. Still exciting to an extent and Raiders fans would be excited, but playing in Dayton in front of home area fans, it felt like Wright State was like Duke when they'd be a #1 seed playing in Greensboro. You got a taste of Wright State being the big dog in the tournament.
As far as it being an NCAA tourney win, I'll take it, but I understand those who don't think it was very impressive from a purely basketball perspective. Bryant was a nice team with a star, but WSU should have won that game. Whereas they shouldn't have beat Arizona, Tennessee, Pittsburgh past NCAA opponents. I felt like they weren't embarrassed by Arizona though. I think they were embarrassed by Tennessee and Pittsburgh for the most part from my recollection. Last year's team by the time it was in the tourney I would say was a team that could have beaten a 3 or 4 seed more than the teams that got crushed by Tennessee and Pittsburgh.
With all that being said! I get where both sides are coming from. On a side note, and I'm biased as I was at the game, but my favorite moment in WSU history was when they beat Butler to win the HL championship at the Nutter Center with Dashaun Wood as PG. I think that was a more significant basketball win then the Bryant win...but I will say I think the Bryant win really gave a positive vibe for Wright State all over the Miami Valley. I think even the doubters after watching them realized how talented and well coached Wright State can be.

I knew that 09 would get down voted and attacked for voicing his opinion on a message board used for Fandom/voicing opinions.
Unfortunately I watched the HL games and needed to bleach my eyes from watching horrible passes, selfish decisions and unathletic players tripping over their own feet. And yet we can't win each year as the league gets worst and worst each year. It's not unrealistic. We have a fan base (albeit aging), good facilities and strong academics.
Was last year having the play in game basically at home fun? Hell yeah it was. And you have to start somewhere to get better. But it is embarrassing being a play in game when you know you should strive for more. We had 3 outstanding players last year, still ended up with a play in game. I also want to point out again, even with 3 outstanding players that were clearly the best at their position in the league, we almost didn't make it. It took a lively crowd to bring life to the team when okaland was kicking our ass and even more energy to come back against nku when they were kicking our ass. A horrible pass by a trash nku player forces a horrible shot by another trash nku player and we win. Had that been against a decent team, probably a decent pass that leads to a decent shot. Our defense did not cause that pass.
My friends, the honest truth is that NKU is running this trash league. They joined in 2015. 4 HL championship wins. WSU joined in 1994. 3 HL championship wins. 4-2 in NKUs favor since they joined. Dangerously close to 5-1.
I'm concern if we are relying on help from the transfer portal because our last couple of transfers have been bad or don't end up playing. We can no longer afford losing out on transfers. I'm tried of the moral victories and learning from the failed season(s). Missing the tournament once should be enough learning. Having one of the worst meltdowns in NCAA history should be enough learning. Losing multiple games on last second layups should be enough learning. We need to make the dance next year. No excuse when we play in such an atrocious league.
D, well said on why you like this program and that we pick ourselves up. I like the optimism. But we really need to go dancing every year. Not every other year. Hopefully we can pick ourselves up and do that.
That embarrassing quarter final loss is something I expect from a coach getting paid 300k and can't coach worth crap. We need higher expectations from someone who has over 500 careee wins and paid 500k.

That embarrassing quarter final loss is something I expect from a coach getting paid 300k and can't coach worth crap. He got trashed for mocking our achievements and trashing our players on a constant basis in EVERY game thread. Everyone is entitled to their option and can express it and that includes fans letting other fans know when you think they are crossing a line. 2. If you read my posts again, I clearly state Wright State has not achieved a level of success any of us want. We ALL have higher expectations for the program but like I just said you don’t need to trash what we have achieved to state that you want even more success. It’s insulting to the school, the athletic department, the players that achieved that success, and our fan base. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of what you have achieved and still have higher expectations. There is something deeply wrong with you if you need to trash someone/something because you want more from them. 3. This thread has gone way off course from its intended purpose. The HL tournament is over and this thread is now too.
