With the completion of the regular season last night, I've tabulated my annual analysis of the attendance results and trends below. As usual, all attendance figures were taken from official box scores. A few teams did not report attendance for exhibiton games, so those were ignored.
Games factored were games in home arenas only (not neutral sites). Schools with multiple home arenas (Milwaukee, Green Bay, IUPUI) had all their games included from either of their normal home arenas.
TOTAL ATTENDANCE: WSU 52,697 NKU 50,079 YSU 42,226 OAK 37,558 CSU 29,050 MKE 27,960 DET 23,151 PFW 21,738 GB 20,696 IUPUI 15,527 RMU 14,394

Ok, 09, you have piqued my curiosity. UIPUI averaged about 1100 for their home games and got 4400 for Spaulding?? And who the heck is Spaulding?
And YSU averaged 2800 for home games and got 4400 for Grace Christian??
Those seem like truly strange numbers??
But a great job putting all that together. BTW did WSU average numbers include our two exhibition games??

So I know the IUPUI Spaulding game was a daytime "education" game where they had a bunch of elementary school kids in attendance, so yeah...certainly odd, but a few years ago we played them in that game.
The YSU game appears to be the same story. An 11am weekday game, though I don't see the promotion called out on their schedule, so I can't say exactly what it was, but it must have been for local students.
WSU does publish attendance figures for all of our home games as do most HL schools; a few schools don't (NKU, GB, MKE, RMU).

Thanks as always for putting this together. IUPUI seems to always get half of their attendance for the season on that education day.

Really appreciate WSURaider09 putting this together as usual. With the end of the season, I wanted to see how this year stacks and take some inspiration from the breakdown of attendance to put this year in perspective of other WSU D-I seasons. May not be the best place for this, so apologies in advance:
1) This is now 36 years of WSU at the D-I level. Including this year, 26 of those the Raiders finished .500 or better.
2) Assuming WSU beats UWGB, that means WSU has won 18 games or more in 19 of their D-I seasons
3) Since joining the HL, WSU is 279-212 in league play (not counting HL tourney). In 29 seasons in the HL, WSU has finished fourth or higher 19 times. Half of the ten years outside the top four occurred from 1994-2000. After that, three of the other times WSU was outside the top 4 the team still finished .500+ in HL play.
4) Trey Calvin has really put together quite the career and if he doesn't come back we should definitely be thankful we saw him develop the way he did. Assuming he hits his scoring average in at least one HL tourney game this year, he is now top 10 in the following categories in terms of career stats: - Points scored -Minutes Played -Field Goals Made -Field Goal Attempts -3 point FG made -3 pt FG attempts -Assists and assists per game -Steals Goes to show a major reason why WSU leads the HL in attendance and its the winning tradition we all come to expect and appreciate (and sometimes may take for granted)

May not be the best place for this, so apologies in advance: Goes to show a major reason why WSU leads the HL in attendance and its the winning tradition we all come to expect and appreciate (and sometimes may take for granted) What's interesting too is that you look at teams atop the league this year...Look at a team like Milwaukee which has had what I'd consider a below-average decade. They've had two winning seasons in the last decade. All of a sudden, new coach, new look Panthers. They turn things around this season, and where are their fans? They're not showing up to games. Obviously their last two coaches were big busts, the fans don't seem to love their AD Amanda Braun. They get this new coach, they get hot, and the fans still don't come out. Though I'll admit, the attendance change might not be incredibly fair. The majority of the league's teams saw attendance dip last year after the "no fan" year, and that is likely largely due to the concerns over Covid. However, some teams have rebounded well this year, and others not so much. I tell you what though, if the trends continue, we won't be long for ruling the roost so to speak, as NKU and YSU both had strong turnouts this year. One last interesting stat of note I just kind of fell onto this morning is home records. Historically, WSU has been very good at home, though that seems to have taken a blow the last number of years. You're almost guaranteed to win this league if you win every home game, and split your road games. Every team above us had a better home record than we did. Winning this league starts at home. Home Records in League Games Only: CSU 9-1, only loss to Milwaukee/ MKE 8-2, losses to WSU & GB NKU 7-3 RMU 7-3 YSU 7-3 OAK 6-4 DET 5-5 WSU 5-5 PFW 4-6 IUPUI 2-8 GB 1-9

I still wish and think our average game attendance could be higher, but it is nice to know that we top the league pretty much every year (since Butler left). Anytime there are more than even 5,000 people in the Nutter Center the atmosphere is great. The NKU game this year was a blast. I wish that happened more often, but still glad it happens at all. Things could be worse. Another thing that will be interesting to watch is how the schedule aligns with the proposed changes of dropping the travel partner format and if that affects attendance at all. That could mean you have a week with a road game and a home game instead of two of one. That could be useful for attendance if there was only one Raider home game a week instead of two one and none the next...if you were looking to attend a game, you wouldn't have two to choose from...but if we have a home game say on a Wednesday or a Thursday and then a road game on a Saturday or Sunday, you can bet that won't be a well attended game being on a school night. Hopefully the league does a good job with balancing the schedule and hopefully doesn't play good rivalry games on weeknights.

I didn't know YSU's arena even held 5,000 good for them! Listed capacity is 6,300. The arena is kind of a bit unusual. You almost only see the lower bowl on the TV feeds. They put the students up on the wings in bleacher style seating that start at the hgight of the basket, not at the floor. What you really don't see are old, dated wood bleachers that go up above the nice premium-seating areas. I don't know the actual count, but I remember those wooden bleachers going up quite a ways and I would wager a guess they have more bleacher seats than they have chairbacks, but I haven't been to Beegly since I was a student, so don't quote me on any of that.

That's interesting wsuraider, I've never been there, yeah on TV it looks like my old high school gym with about 2,000 seats so I wouldn't have guessed they had that much. I thought Purdue Fort Wayne looks pretty small too on TV, but couldn't really tell.
