Sorry to see Amari go. I was really hoping he could turn it around and find his role/fit in Nagy's system this season. I guess there's one open scholarship. Hopefully we can get a big man that can make significant contributions.

Hopefully we can get a big man that can make significant contributions. That doesn’t create an open scholarship. We were one over when we added Tanner and Bo. We cannot add a big man unless we lose another scholarship player. 2023/24 Roster as of 5/19/23:Seniors:Trey Calvin SS Bo Myers SS Tanner Holden SS Andrew Welage Juniors:Keaton Norris Alex Huibregtse RS AJ Braun Sophomores:Brandon Noel RS Freshmen:Logan Woods RS Drey Carter RS Dayjaun Anderson Kaden Brown Solomon Callaghan

Maybe my assumption was wrong, but I thought Bo was going to be a walk-on. Part of my basis for this was the wording: "Committed" rather than "Signed." More interesting - I just went back to check on Bo's announcement and it looks like that tweet has been deleted AND the story that was on the WSU Athletics website has been removed. Perhaps Bo isn't coming here after all.

If he’s not coming my guess would be that he backed out after the announcement that Tanner was coming back. If that’s the case I’m glad he’s not coming. We need team oriented guys willing to put in the work to earn their spot in the rotation and their playing time.

Sorry to see Davis go.

This means Davis was in the portal by May 11, it was just only made public today, correct? I was excited when Davis was brought in, especially as a local kid. But with Calvin on the floor virtually the entire game I think it's tough to have 2 guards on the smaller side out there at the same time defensively; especially when I assume Holden will be logging major minutes as the "4".
Unrelated, but are we under the impression Tanner Holden gets the #2 back from Drey Carter??

This means Davis was in the portal by May 11, it was just only made public today, correct? Not necessarily. If he already graduated, he could enter the portal at any time as a grad transfer. If our staff already knew he was transferring, that might explain why we've apparently been contacting other players in the portal though.

Davis didn’t have to enter the portal by the 11th since he is a grad transfer. Holden is going to get his minutes be it at the 2-4 spot. It all depends on who we sign with our last scholarship, how some of our underclassmen develop by next season, and in game match ups vs other teams. Number 2 belongs to Drey now. It’s up to him if he wants to give it back to Tanner.

Calvin, Holden and Noel are the no-brainer starters here. (It feels odd/good to type that about Holden again.)
If we want to start games with more size, I'd say that Braun is a starter too - although he and Noel are the only guys we have who can truly play a 5 role. I'm guessing that we will not see them together on the court a whole lot.
IMO, Hube and Welage are/were our best outside shooters (2-3 type guys) - with Welage very under-used (again IMO.) So that is (6) guys who I think could be legit starters and the 6th of those ^ guys could be a first-off-the-bench type. Every one of those ^ guys has been here for several+ years.
Carter and Woods have been here through a year of practices and training. Both have good height for their projected positions but Carter is listed at 5 lbs lighter than Hube...and with 5" more of height. Hopefully he puts on the good weight to allow some time as a 4. I don't recollect if Woods played much as a 1 and I don't remember if Carter was more of a wing in HS.
The new guys (so far) are all guards. Brown looks like a 1. I hope this kid can be the backup to Calvin. Maybe Brown plays some PG with Calvin out there to allow Calvin that breather from bringing the ball up the court all-game, all-year. We haven't had a PG who drives to the hoop in forever. Norris is the default backup PG, but he doesn't drive/create the offense and isn't big, strong, fast to defend other PGs.
Callaghan and Anderson are 6'2" & 6'3" and both weigh in at 180. Decent size for HL guards...but they'll need to put on some good weight. Some recruiting videos of Callaghan indicate he can handle the ball.
If Carter can legitimately play the 4, we may be ok in the front-court...if not, that ^ sure looks like a team in need of another 'big guy'.

Welage needs to start and play more. He's one of the most under used and underrated players in wsu imo. He's a fantastic player and needs to see the court more.

It reminds me of Jerran Young & how he could do so much on the court but the coaches didn't utilize him like I wanted (and I'm a fan so I definitely know best). I have a lot more faith in this staff with Welage compared to Donlon's staff with Young to get Welage on the court more but last year he was 8th on the team in minutes/game at 16.8. Behind both Amari Davis & Keaton Norris. I remember celebrating so much when the starting lineup included Welage and it was like, "Finally!" but unfortunately it didn't last. I want him as one of the starters this year but I don't know if it's going to happen. I really hope the coaches can get one more big man for some much-needed depth so Braun/Noel can play together more often.

Callaghan played PG in high school and is capable of playing the 1/2 in our system. Anderson is a pure 2.

Welage lack of playing time comes down to his lack of physicality. He is 6-6 and needs to play the 3 in our system. If he is going to get extended minutes next year it comes down to can he be an effective rebounder for us at the 3. If we are going to play 4 guards next year (and it is looking more and more likely as the roster gets more set) we need our guards to be able to rebound especially the 3/4 position guards. We know Tanner can rebound if he is playing the 3 or 4 for us next year. Welage needs to be able to as well. Our defense looked much worse than it was last year because our rebounding was way below par for a Nagy coached Wright State team. Even when we played good defense and forced our opponent into a poor shot, we failed to secure the defensive rebound too often. Welage is going to need to step up his commitment to hitting the boards if he wants to play more and I really hope he does. Drey Carter is going to get alot of minutes at the 3/4 next year and he was a good rebounder in high school. I really hope he has been utilizing his red-shirt year in the weight room and is physically ready to step in and contribute. I like this team. I think we can be successful playing small but I'd feel a lot better about next year if we land a portal big with our last scholarship. If you have been paying attention to the HL recruiting this spring, the rest of the conference has done a good job adding some size. I think we are going to need to play 2 bigs at times and we are going to need another big to be able to do that. The Baylor kid might just be the key to a successful year next year.
