WSU 16 UWM 8
The Raiders finished with 16 runs on ten hits with 15 walks against their 12 strikeouts. They were led by Sammy Sass and Ben Vore, both recording two hits. Drew Baker, Patrick Fultz, Julian Greenwell, Gus Gregory, Andrew Patrick, and Boston Smith each added one hit on the day. Making up seven extra-base hits on the day, the Raiders recorded two doubles, one each from Fultz and Patrick, and five home runs, one each from Baker, Greenwell, Sass, Smith, and Vore. Of their 15 walks, Greenwell and Patrick reached base three times on balls, Luikart two times, and Luke Arnold, Baker, Fultz, Harrison Parker, Sass, Smith, and Vore once.
The pitching staff actually held the Panthers to nine hits in nine innings. Here are the Raider pitching stats:
Garrett Simpson (W 3-1) 6 IP, 5 hits, 5 earned runs. Griffen Paige 1 IP, 4 hits 3 earned runs Warren Hartzell 2 IP, 0 hits, 0 earned runs.
RaiderGang hit five HRs in the 3rd Inning. In the 4th, Jay Luikart was called out on strikes and got tossed. I am not sure when he said, but he said it walking back to the dugout. Then Alex Sogard came out to following Luikart's exit and got tossed. If you follow the Raiders, you know that Sogard is calm and respectful. Now players and coaches are not allowed to argue balls and strikes, so he might have just said it was a bad call, which is all it takes to get tossed. Then Assistant Coach Jordan Chiero got tossed. At this point we do not know what any of the three said to get tossed. If I find out, I will let you know. A Raider player or coach getting tossed is a rare occurrence.
This game was never in question after the third inning.

The five HRs all occurred in the 3rd inning. 4 were off a pitcher who had only allowed 2 HRs all season. And the announcers kept repeating the stadium record for HRs by one team was 3 until Raidergang hit 4 on Friday, and now its 5, all in one inning.
The ejections, it sure looks like Sass said nothing. he did toss the bat toward the dugout when he thought it was ball 4, but the strike three call came very late. Probably whatever was said came from the dugout, and the ump got the wrong person (Sass) -- that would certainly get Sogard to come out and question it if it wasn't Sass who said something. It possibly came from the other assistant who got tossed? The home plate ump was bush league in that he walked to first base or right field, kept his back turned, and wouldn't get within 50 feet of Sogard, letting the first base ump deal with it. This is the same home plate ump that had made no call on a double down the first base line that was clearly foul, and another ball down toward first that he made no call (the first base ump got that one right).
Bottom line, Raidergang wins by 8. Let's do it again today.
Lastly, if you missed the HR robbing catch Oakland made against NKU yesterday, go check it out on youtube. The LF goes over the wall and pulls it back, and the CF dives to catch it. A great catch!!

UWM 7 WSU 6
On the 40th Anniversary of Pete Rose's 4000 hit, RaiderGang let another winnable game slip away. The Raiders finished with six runs on 13 hits with five walks against their eight strikeouts. They were led by Sammy Sass's four hits, followed by Carson Clark, Nate Manley, and Ben Vore each recording two hits. Drew Baker, Patrick Fultz, and Julian Greenwell each recorded one hit on the day. Making up Wright State's two extra-base hits were Sass with a double and Vore with a home run.
RaiderGang used four pitchers today, which compared to the six or so they quite often use, they are going in the right direction. They also held the Panthers to nine hits.
Chet Lax 3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 ER Josh Leisure (Loss, 0-2) 1.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER Garrett Peters 1 I, 1 H, 0 R Can Allen 2 IP, 1 H, 4 SO
At this rate Wright State is going to set the record for one-run losses.
Ohio State is at the Nisch on Tuesday

To paraphrase Major League, Raidergang left a small village on the base paths today. This was a game they could and should have won. Outhit MKE 13-9, yet the runs were 6 to 7.

Okay, time for a RaiderGang report card. To help me do this I recruited Madness.
Pitching Madness-this has been the worst set of arms I have seen in a longtime at Wright State, two freshmen lead the pitching staff. Grade: C
runt-on paper this should be a decent pitching staff, but they have not developed as expected. Grade D
Hitting Madness-the numbers they are putting up this year are insane as a team they are batting 12th in the country. Grade: A
runt-this team can hit, and the power is eye-popping. Grade: A
Baserunning Madness-base running has been an issue this year and seems like they don’t run a lot this year. Grade: C
runt-this team definitely is not as adept at base stealing as past Raider teams and the baserunning at times has been sloppy. Grade: B-
Defense Madness-usually they are okay Grade: B
runt-this defense is usually solid. Grade: B+
Coaching Madness-has been a joke this year with the bs they are doing playing guys where they don’t belong is insane to me. Pitching has been bad and this this falls on the head man Coach Sogard. But the hitting been good. Grade: B
runt: I think Coach Sogard has been pretty imaginative in how he has tried to pitch by committee to overcome the pitching woes, but he has had at best minor success doing this. I think because of Coach Sogards history of success, I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. The culture of this program is off the charts--excellent. Grade: B
Overall Grade Madness: B Runt: B-
Two years ago today Jake Shirk pitched a complete game to beat NKU. Two years ago Shirt, Laisure, Luikhart and Gallagher all had ERAs under 7.00. This year the team ERA is 8.86.
In 2022 Shirk was 6-6, Luikhart was 4-2, and Garrett was 2-0. So, the mystery is why are these veterans all having a down year at the same time. As I look into the future at the freshmen pitchers Cam Allen stands out as having some really good stuff, he just needs to get consistent. He will strike out two or three, then give up two or three hits. This sill improve as he gets inning under his belt. If I knew I would be rich by helping teams fix their pitching problems. I do know the Coach Sogard is an excellent coach with track record of success. If I could buy stock in our RaiderGang today, I would because I am confident the price will go way up.

I would be a little more critical of the Defense. It's not because of errors, it is because all the Infielders do not have must range, e.g. Boston at SS the other day. He missed a ball up the middle that he should have had. On a ball hit in the hole, instead of planting his back foot to throw immediately, he had to run through the ball and his momentum caused him not to have a play. And then on the next play, he has a throwing error to make it worse.

Two thoughts on the grades. I do not know how pitching can be graded better than F. It is the only thing keeping the raiders from being a nationally ranked team.
Second, madness I assume since the coach gets the “credit” for the horrible pitching he also gets the credit for the spectacular hitting. Right???
