I haven't been tracking, but in addition to the players not in the game...where's coach Brown been on the radio? The last time I was listening to the radio feed was when we played in the Florida tournament and coach didn't make the trip due to a back injury. Just curious.

Have not been to a home game since before Covid. A few friends talked me into going to todays game, this meant getting off my comfy couch and leaving ESPN+ behind. Got to the ticket office in the front of Nutter between 12:45 and 12:50, there were about twenty-five people in line in front of me. Only one ticket window was open. Some of the people in line were not going to the Raider game, they were getting tickets for Transiberian Orchestra and the Globetrotters. By the time I purchased my $10 ticket and received the paper receipt, it was 1:15, I had missed the first ten minutes of the game. My friends said I should go on down and complain to Bob Grant, but I didn't feel like it. Such a disappointing experience, but not a surprise. The Wright State Nutter Center experience has been going downhill since the late 1990s. One does not go to a Wright State game for the experience, it is all about the basketball, everything else is third world entertainment.

Nice to see KK open things up a bit. With any luck his shooting will improve like Trey’s did after his freshman and sophomore years.

I didn't see anything to entice people to go to this matinee game. No giveaways, no special ticket prices, etc. Did I miss something? Have not been to a home game since before Covid. I don’t know what either of you are thinking and what team you have neen following for the last 10 years to expect anything different? Wright State just went through a huge financial crisis. The athletic department drastically cut its budget and even had to drop sports. To say the least, the money spent on in game promotions is much different than it was 10-20 years ago. This was a crappy filler game. I doubt anyone from the athletic department thought anyone would attend outside of us season ticket holders who were forced to buy the tickets as part of our package. They weren’t going to waste a dime on give always or anything else to attract fans because NO ONE was going to pay to see an afternoon game vs a school no one has ever heard of. They spent money promoting the Miami game and had a winter hat giveaway because they thought they could get fans to attend that game. In regards to your experience at the ticket office, what do you expect to happen when you show up to a college sporting event without tickets 10-15 minutes before tip off? I guarantee you that you wouldn’t have had better luck at any other D1 program in Ohio getting ticket with that type of time management skills. Once you were in line and you realized the line was moving too slow you could have pulled out your phone and just purchased your tickets on Ticketmaster.

Reply from Old School: Mr. D, I like paying in cash. I have gone to college D-1 b-ball games in Columbus 15 minutes before tip-off and have never spent more than fifteen minutes in line at the box office to purchase a ticket with cash. The crowds at those games were 15 to 20 times the one I saw today at WSU. The issue is not the fewer than thirty people in line in front of me, the issue is that only one ticket window was open. How about opening at least one more window for game day b-ball tickets and the other window can accommodate Transiberian Orchestra and Globetrotter tickets.

I think giveaways are silly for a non-D1 game, but last year against a non-D1 (Northwestern OH), a Saturday (December 17) afternoon game, was "Youth Sports Day" and they gave away Wright State socks sponsored by Pepsi. Forget the giveaways. It's a rare afternoon game -- I believe one of only 2 this entire season. I was just thinking of some effort to try to get more people to attend. Promote special family packages or discounted tickets. (last season the other non-D1 game had a special 4 tickets for $20) Make it ugly Christmas sweater day. Something. Anything. It seems exactly like you put it-- this was a filler game and the athletic department, not expecting anyone besides season ticket holders (and some Muskingum fans) to attend, put no effort into it.

I was actually pretty shocked at the turnout we had.

I highly doubt that you showed up at an OSU basketball game 15 minutes before tip off and didn’t run into trouble. Even if that miracle did occur for you, that is probably much more of an outlier than a regular occurrence. Even if it is somehow a regular thing at Ohio State, it is pretty silly to think that you will have anywhere near the same game day experience at a university like OSU and Wright State. My guess is that Ohio State budgets more for their staff for every single game than Wright State is able to spend on its entire season. The difference in our finances is astronomical. In regards to your comment about you like to use cash, that isn’t even possible at several universities across the state. The team across town for example only accepts credit or debit cards at the arena. The point Big D was trying to make is the athletic department is run on a shoe string budget. Every cent that we spend on something that we get no return on is taken away from something that the staff needs. And I’m sorry to tell you this but having an extra person to sell tickets was an expense without a return. It took you longer to get into the arena for the game, but you didn’t decide to leave and not see the game, so the university didn’t loose any revenue from it. Spending money to market a game no one was really going to attend would have been a waste of resources that could have gone towards a game more people may attend. Every dollar matters to the budget. I’d rather the money that we would have had to pay someone to work the ticket office go towards gas money for one of our assistant coaches that they can use on the recruiting trail. When it comes to our shoe string budget, our AD really has to make those kind of decisions. In a perfect world, we have every box office and concession line open. In a perfect world, we play an all D1 schedule and run promotions and have halftime/time out entertainment for every game to get fans to attend and be engaged. We just cannot afford that currently.

Did what we needed to do! Back to .500 hopefully we keep improving for league play coming up. The Wisconsin trip is always a hard one every year. Hopefully we have a nice solid turnout for the CSU game too! I think we can get 4.5k to 5k in the nutter center for that one!

I went to a Cincinnati Bearcats game with family last week for the first time in about 20 years being at a Bearcats game. Nice arena after their recent updates, but I was a little struck by how loud everything was, music blaring during most intermissions, always something going on during admission. Some of the games during timeouts were kind of fun and I understand it's become more of an entertainment business then just basketball.
But I think for me boy I'd like just the pep band mostly playing during intermissions, I think maybe i'd like the more simple approach of Wright State games if that's what they're doing?

Totally agree, if you want entertainment go to a UC game or that nameless school across town game. If you want to go to a boring entertainment venue head on out to the Nutter Center and catch a Raider game. The simple approach is good, pay for ESPN+, and watch the game on your Big Screen in your cozy family room, that is the best way to watch the Raiders these days.

I didn't see anything to entice people to go to this matinee game. No giveaways, no special ticket prices, etc. Did I miss something? I expected something to try to get families/youth teams to come to the game. Maybe for the best as the atmosphere is usually poor during winter break without the band and they might be less likely to come back. I hope the scheduling philosophy can be reassessed. I haven't been as critical as others of playing non D1 teams, but outside of giving minutes to some players who haven't seen many minutes, this game does nothing. I believe the 2019-2020 season was the last time WSU paid a D1 team to come to the Nutter Center. Back then, the way the rankings/metrics worked, blowing out a bad D1 team wouldn't help you-- it might even hurt your metrics/NET ranking. With changes made to the NET formula (though the NCAA still refuses to be transparent with it), blowing out a D1 team will now improve your NET ranking, so it could be worthwhile paying a SWAC school to play at the Nutter Center. I'm not sure how the finances are in the athletic department these days--I just feel this middle of the season non-D1 game needs to go. Just an observation here... I was at the game and noticed that there was a group of middle school kids in the first rows of our student section. They were holding up the signs that the WSU students usually hold up during Raider games. Those kids were having the time of their lives and enjoying every minute of the game!!!
