Those officials were trash. More importantly, as always seems to be the case, the Raiders cannot get a stop when they need it most. Had several opportunities. Hey, at least this time we didn't have a second half collapse -- we took care of that in the first half instead.

No moral victories. We are just a bad team. Feels like we are the very ugly step-child compared to the team across town. How deflating.

That full court pressure defense looked pathetic and half-assed, especially when the starters were in.

There are some nights this teams looks like a legit good team and other nights it looks like Raiders couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

Insights from behind the bench: I don’t know why we do full court press when we don’t even attempt to trap. It is so loose that there is no pressure on the ball and then 0 would sit in the corner and bury a 3.
Why Tanner was not on Reynolds, I don’t understand. Reynolds just muscled Trey and Alex all night to the hoop.
We knew they would shoot 3s after the first game and still look lost guarding it.
The offense is just different with AJ in the game. The flow just changes because we try to pound it inside while our outside guys are waiting for pass back out. When we have guys who can play anywhere we seem to move better on cute. The offense was going better with Drey in who had a pretty good game. I hope Drey keeps getting more PT.
I am glad Nagy sat the 4 down because nothing was flowing. The bench guys need more PT because we are just getting beat to hoop too often.

I can't believe we've lost twice to that mediocre team. They have one stellar player (Reynolds), and a bunch of average guys who skill set is they can't create a shot, but they can drain open threes if they're given more than 2 seconds to get it off. And we just leave them wide open in the corner, and they get all day to line it up. A gimmick offense, and we let them score almost 90, and shoot 54% from 3. I'm willing to bet both NKU and Oakland will hold them to about 65 points, and win going away by 20 or so.
It also shocks me that we had zero energy most the game. Don't know what was going on the first half -- Tanner couldn't buy a basket, and Trey missed several that are usually automatic for him, including one mid range air ball.
The really sad part is MKE just got manhandled by NKU, and BJ Freeman was 1 for 9 from 3. Who wants to bet they come in motivated, and he turns that stat around on Saturday?

Vandalia, I think the full court press was more to try to get us to wake up and start playing with energy, rather than to actually create turnovers. As for Reynolds, Tanner wasn't very effective on him either. Trey definitely could not stop him, and Alex wasn't doing much better. The only one that had any impact on him was Noel, and BG would just create a switch when we did that. So we kept trying to double team him, and then he'd kick it to the unguarded corner for a wide open 3. We actually did force him into some bad shots against the double team, but clearly his 8 assists means he was beating the double team a lot. As much as this board would rag on them, this team really misses having one lock down defender like Tim Finke or Mark Hughes to put on a guy like Reynolds, or BJ Freeman this weekend.

Mark Hughes as a lockdown defender is legit...Tim Finke as a lockdown defender is a myth. JMO

Mark Hughes as a lockdown defender is legit...Tim Finke as a lockdown defender is a myth. JMO Finke wasn’t necessarily a lock down guy, he could guard guys his size or a little smaller, anticipated well on passes. But his best defensive attribute was he was really good at communicating and getting other guys in the right position.

Perfect illustration of this season and of this current program:
Immediately after the last time out gb of course got the ball across the time line easily and Tanner fouled #21. Nagy barked at Tanner and Tanner turns around and gives Nagy "what?"
Fine, Tanner fouled the wrong guy. But that's not the issue.
The issue is that this is immediately after a time out. And Nagy didn't clearly communicate during the time out what he expected. Or he did and Tanner didn't listen. Either way that is something that just can't happen at a critical time in the game when we need to do absolutely everything exactly right to have any chance to win the game.
But not only did we not do exactly the right things, which is frustrating but understandable. But apparently the players didn't even understand what was expected.
And this isn't an anomaly. How many times do we come out of a time out and give up an easy basket? It happens all the time. How many times do we come out of a time out and have no idea what we are doing in offense? It happens all the time. Very frustrating to watch.

I try not to be hyperbolic but this is shaping up to be one of the most disappointing seasons in the 25+ years I've been following WSU.
I truly thought this would be a memorable season with all the offensive firepower but it doesn't matter if WSU can't stop anyone.
Of course WSU can still "save the season" by winning the conference tournament but that would mean another First Four appearance and a very very low chance at winning the round of 64 game.
Not trying to pile on but this season has been mostly disappointing.

Mark Hughes as a lockdown defender is legit...Tim Finke as a lockdown defender is a myth. JMO I would have agreed last year but the difference in D from this year to last suggests he's better than we thought. Just go back further and think back to Nagys first NCAA team. They had multiple solid defenders that could lock up their guys. Grant, Cole, Mark, Everett, Justin Mitchell (til he left). The drop-off in the quality of D over the last several years has been depressing to see. Good or bad, this program, starting with Biancardi and then BB/BD, knows good defense when they see it.

Perfect illustration of this season and of this current program: Immediately after the last time out gb of course got the ball across the time line easily and Tanner fouled #21. This play is what sticks out the most. Raiders had the benefit of only having 6 team fouls late but seemed to have no game awareness. They chose to foul their best and most composed player Reynolds, then wasted at least 10 seconds on the next possession before fouling. You're never dead when the other team has to shoot the one-and-one several times. On top of that, why is Calvin in on defense with 4 fouls? I love Calvin, but its not like he's an indispensable defender, or can create havoc with his length. Why are they not subbing offense/defense late in the game and getting Welage in when down a couple possessions late? Odds are the outcome would not have been different, but game management was lacking imo.
