It's unfortunate that using bench players was against the rules in the second half. The Big 5 averaged over 35 minutes each yesterday. The freshmen played only 23 minutes combined. Carter played 13 minutes, Woods 6 minutes, and Brown 4 minutes. The freshmen bring energy to the floor. The Big Five look like worn out zombies. The Big 5 were not playing well yesterday, but Nagy kept riding that dead horse and left the three "fresh" freshmen on the bench for pretty much the entire second half. Just don't get Nagy, he is so stubborn, he needs to play the freshmen more to give the Big 5 a break. Braun and Noel look like they are worn out, not sure how much they have left in the tank for the stretch run. WSU has lost all five games against the best three teams. Everyone of those losses felt the same. WSU falls behind in the middle of the second half and the players are too worn out to make a successful run at the end. Things seem bleak, but this team can still make the dance with proper handling and a little luck. Yes, I know that Nagy is not going to change, so I guess the team needs a lot of luck.

Why would any students show up for this team? There's no fight in them, as soon as they are down they act defeated. Often when they turn out we choke. No idea what osu did to Tanner but he's just not the same player. The disappointing season continues. I wish fans wouldn't question the heart of the players on this team. I see a team full of players that are playing hard and trying to play to the best of their abilities. I also see a team that is unable to play consistent basketball, because they are worn out due to five players getting the bulk of the minutes. This team has three star players, Noel, Calvin and Holden. But, does this team have a leader? I don't think so. This team is talented, but I think it is missing a leader on the court. I think Finke was the leader the last few years and his absence is felt this year. Tanner Holden is still a very good player, he is not as sharp as I remember, but he has had a decent year. Try comparing Holden to Amari Davis, I thought we were getting a superstar in Davis when he transferred to WSU, but his performance didn't come close to the expectations. Anyway, the Wright State players all seem to be nice kids. They seem composed on the court and come across as nice and genuine when interviewed.

I have not blamed the players and will not. How many times have we seen a very predicable offense and defense. When this happens a good coach, not even great coach, can design offense and defense to defeat them. To me that is exactly what is happening. I think he may really prefer to retire and not deal with the more time it takes recruiting, etc.

I wish fans would stop making bs argument to defend this team. Saying this team is playing hard but losing games because we only play 5 players and they are worn out is bs. That argument would hold some water if we were playing good earlier in the year and have been taking a nosedive late in the season due to the guys getting worn down. That isn’t the case. We are losing because our players refuse to put in the effort to play good defense. That was a problem at the beginning of the year and it’s still a problem now. We’ve had games were we have only played 6 to 7 players and other games where we have played 10. The defense has sucked all year and it’s due to a lack of effort and hustle. The old Butler teams that dominated the horizon league did so because they played with great intensity on both ends of the court and played very disciplined team basketball. They were never the most athletic team on the court. They just played harder than everybody else. That’s why they were able to beat the big boys consistently. This team gets out hustled to almost every loose ball and gets killed on the board solely due to the lack of effort. These guys put almost all of their energy into scoring buckets and next to none on the defensive end of the court. You are never gonna win games like that consistently.

Another difference...for recent history, the best WSU players played lock down D and took pride in it because it showed in their effort.... Dashuan, Vaughn Duggins, John David Gardner ( when healthy), Cory Cooperwood, Loudon, Joe Thomassan, Grant Benzinger, Cole Gentry, Billy Wampler etc... I still remember Matt Vest locking up Juwan Howard Jr at home and diving all over the court for loose balls.

There is a huge gap between effort and capability. We have guys who are capable but don't put out 'enough' effort...and guys who put out plenty of 'effort' but simply aren't capable. I'll let you alone with your own opinions as to who is which.
My criticism of Coach is his stubbornness to not deviate from his 'style' of defense - given that ^ statement - AND his sticking with rotations that aren't producing better/improving results. The status quo isn't getting it done and we are approaching the home stretch here. At this point, a switch to a high-scoring mindset would make more sense. Yes, we all want better defense - but we aren't/can't doing that. We ARE capable of scoring a lot of points. At our level of Bball, going all out into high-scoring mode can be a dual-edge sword...but at least we'd HAVE a sword.
Between our starting (5) guys and the next (3)-(4) guys...there isn't a single player on the roster who is so good and so effective that any (1) guy absolutely MUST play more than (30+) minutes per game...and he does it with multiple guys over multiple games.
I'll say this again: We are 2/3 through the season and still haven't figured it out. Try something different.

Brownell and Donlon both recruited guys that wanted to play hard, dive after loose balls, take charges. They also recruited high level athletes. There hasn't been an athlete on the roster like Steven Davis, Jerran Young in years.
