Raiders Release Schedule
Five MAC teams, a tough Horizon League slate and Bracket Buster Saturday highlight the 2005-06 Wright State University men’s basketball schedule.
The Raiders open the season at Belmont in Nashville, TN Nov.19 before traveling to Toledo the following Wednesday evening as the first of the five opponents from the Mid-American Conference. Ball State visits the Nutter Center for the home opener. Other MAC games include Miami, Northern Illinois and Akron.
WSU will open the league schedule early this year by hosting Detroit Dec. 7, just five games into the season. Belmont, UT-Pan American and Northeastern will all visit during the holiday season.
Other Horizon League home games to watch for include Loyola January 7, Illinois-Chicago January 25, Youngstown State January 30, NCAA Cinderella-team UW-Milwaukee February 2, UW-Green Bay February 4, Butler February 11, and Cleveland State February 15.
The Raiders will go on the road in this year’s Bracket Buster Saturday but will not know their opponent until February 1. The Horizon League tournament will follow the same format as last year as the four, five and six seeds will host the lower seeds February 28 with the remaining six teams meeting at the highest seed’s home arena March 3-7.
More special promotions will be announced closer to the start of the season.

This is one pathetic schedule ... we should expect a rush of people buying season tickets. Why even bother playing Kenyon in January? I hope whomever was in charge of this press-release felt embarassed for MAC teams highlighting the schedule.
I guess we all knew this was coming, but did not want to believe that we can sink so low.

The home schedule is less than desirable. Ball State should be a decent game but we are not going to attract many new fans with the likes of Belmont, Texas Pan Am, Northeastern, or Kenyon. We should have taken a money game at a BCS school rather than play Kenyon. This schedule looks like we are just trying to pad our win column.

If I had to chose 1 word to describe our schedule it would be --safe. Almost everyone we play had a decent RPI last year except Texas Pan Am. None of those games should hurt us, but none should really help us either. They are all winnable games. They main thing this schedule is lacking is a big name school. I can live with most of the games on the schedule, but I wish we would could change 2 games. There is no reason to play Belmont twice this year. You can't tell me that we couldn't have signed another decent local mid-major and only played Belmont once this year. We could have played Valpo, Murray St, West Ky, Evansville, Oakland, Kent St, BGSU, Ohio U, etc. The only other game that makes no sense is Kenyon. We could have played Kenyon as our 2nd exhibition and taken a money game on the road vs a local BCS program. We could have used the money and bump in RPI we would have gotten by playing an OSU, UC, IU, UK, etc. Heck, if we had to play a non-D1 team, we could have at least played N. Ky or another school that we used to play before we went D1.

Raiders basketball schedules announced By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | A non-Horizon League conference schedule consisting of five Mid-American Conference schools — including a game at Miami on Nov. 30 — plus another bout with a Bracket Buster team, highlight Wright State's men's basketball schedule this season. The Raiders, coming off two consecutive .500 seasons, also play a two-game home-and-home series with Belmont University, opening the season at the Nashville school on Nov. 19 and hosting the Bruins on Dec. 17. The women's team also released its schedule, which includes two games in the Tallahassee, Fla., Seminole Classic Nov. 26-27, a game at Miami on Nov. 30, at Dayton on Dec. 6 and at Ohio State on Feb. 7. Coach Bridgett Williams' team — coming off a 19-11 record — will play seven road games before hosting Marshall at the Nutter Center on Tuesday, Dec. 13. A year ago, on the way to a 15-15 record, the men's team of coach Paul Biancardi opened in the preseason NIT, beating Tulsa and losing to Arizona. Although this year's schedule does not contain anything that glamorous, and does have the two Belmont games plus a home game with Division III Kenyon on Jan. 9, Biancardi is happy with the lineup. "We believe this is a balanced and tough schedule that presents us with challenges and prepares us for the rigors of the Horizon League," Biancardi said in a statement. "We have some good matchups and rivalries that our fans will enjoy." Although the series with nearby Miami is tilted in Miami's favor 14-6, three of the last four games were decided by six points or less, including last season's 59-54 overtime victory by the RedHawks at the Nutter Center. There will be at least 13 home games, depending on where the first rounds of the league championship are played. Our nonleague home schedule is not very good at all. I have a feeling that our attendance will take a step backwards because of this very unattracting home schedule.
I hope it is not the trend but I know of 3 families that are not renewing thier season tickets..........once the schedule came out they decided to go only to certian games...........Kenyon? In January? Come on!!!!!

I guess the best thing about this year's schedule is that it sets us up for a few decent home games next season.
We should be playing Miami, Toledo, and Akron at home. I believe we will be in the final year of each of those contracts. We will have the return game from this year's Bracket Buster and we should have a home game in next year's Bracket Buster as well. That gives us 5 home games and 1 road game vs Ball State. We will have 5 games left to schedule. If we are lucky, we can either get into another preseason/holiday tournament or sign a 2 for 1 with a BCS school.

I have posted on RRB and really the boards are a way for me to stay connected to WSU and BB in particular. The thing I find so frustrating is the apologist attitude toward EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, it's so hard to recruit being mid-level.......Oh, it's not easy to get a good schedule being mid-major.....Oh, it's not easy ect ect ect. Please give me a reason for this paradox. We have a nice arena, now a stunning practice facility, but let's schedule div III, gosh, with luck maybe we ca actually be a threat to UIC. Wow, we could someday be better than average! We should be THE GUY in the HL. We should EXPECT to be in the HL finals. We should find post season play on a regular basis!!!! This program really has the foundation to be a serious player, but mentally it's like we are just out of Div II. Can anyone give me a reason?!?!?!

WSU is in the HL. It is the 18th ranked conference out of 32 conferences. We recruit primarily in OH, MI, KY, and IN and have to recruit against teams from the Big 10, A-10, MAC, and MVC. WSU has never been a D1 power. The highest we have ever finished in any conference is 4th. It has been 4 years since our last winning season and our Coach is under NCAA investigation. Considering all that is stacked against us right now, I think we have done a good job with recruiting. Once this NCAA mess is behind us, I think we will do even better. I would imagine it is pretty hard to sell WSU to a recruit right now when our coach can't guarantee he will even be employed here next season.
BCS schools don't sign 1 for 1 contracts with mid majors very often. They sign 2 for 1 contracts and pay day games against mid majors. For example, UWGB had to sign a 3 for 1 deal to get MSU to come to Green Bay. Most of the better mid major teams out there have to play more games on the road to schedule the big boys. The athletic dept won't give up home games. I think most fans would rather have us drop Kenyon from the schedule and play UC or OSU on the road. The AD won't let us do that. Our coach is probably partially to blame for this schedule as well. Coach B is in the 3rd year of his contract (as well as the NCAA investigation). He is under pressure to win this year. I think he scheduled a few easier games to ensure a better record this year, but that is just my opinion.
I agree that we should be THE GUY in the HL. I hope this is the year we take our program to the next level.

More foolishness on Cusack's part. You can't tell me that there is not more $$$ to be had taking pay day games against real teams on the road, vs. a one-third full (or less) Nutter Center.
I think mediocrity (and having to give away tickets to fill the arena) is acceptable to the administration for some reason.

As long as we are breaking even I don't think our athletic department cares how we do on the court.
