Raiders caught 'standing around'

CHICAGO | Wright State coach Paul Biancardi said he'll have to watch film to determine what happened, but he really won't.
"We started standing around," Biancardi said of Wednesday night's 76-63 loss to Loyola Chicago. "We weren't cutting, we weren't setting screens. We weren't making foul shots.
"And let's give Loyola credit. That's a good-shooting team."
• Junior walk-on guard Reinaldo Smith was in the lineup again Wednesday, the second straight game he played significant minutes.
With a couple of suspensions at the beginning of the season, Smith worked his way into the starting lineup and in the first three games, played more than 20 minutes a game.
Since then, he hardly played at all until Saturday, when he logged seven minutes against Bowling Green, scoring five points on two baskets, both of them at key moments in the game.
"I worked my way back in," Smith said.
He played nine minutes in the first half against Loyola Wednesday, scoring five points on three free throws and a basket. He played eight more in the second half, but didn't score anymore.
As a walk-on transfer from Division II Findlay College, Smith didn't know what to expect from his first season at Division I Wright State. Sitting the bench also had something to do with injuries. Smith has sprained his foot, hurt his back and been sick.
"It's been an up and down season," Smith said.
"After my ankle injury, Coach (Paul) Biancardi called me at home and said I had to get back into form. I took that to heart."
He played hard in practice even though he didn't play much in games. "He's been practicing well," Biancardi said. "His mind is really into it. He is always focused and always pays attention. That's why he's playing now.
"You look on the bench to see how players deal with being there. Do they still talk and encourage their teammates? He does."
• Ludlow, Ky., senior Dan Penick, a 6-foot-9, 235-pounder, has given a verbal commitment to the Raiders for next season.
Penick told the Kentucky Post, "I just think it's the best thing for me and my family because it's close (to home)."
Penick is averaging 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Unless somebody leaves the program, that would conclude WSU's incoming class. Already, 6-5 Todd Brown of Canton McKinley has committed to the Raiders and with the loss of Jaron Taylor to graduation, that would give the team 13 scholarship players. Signing day is early in April.
