Raiders take chance on a small school By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | The last time Wright State played a non-Division I school in basketball, the outcome wasn't so great. Two years ago, in his opener as coach of the Raiders, Paul Biancardi's team lost to nearby Cedarville 68-66. While Cedarville had an excellent team, it plays in the NAIA, not the NCAA. Tonight, another non-Division I school comes calling at the Nutter Center. Kenyon is in the NCAA, but Division III, and is suffering with a seven-game losing streak. "It's a game that counts on our schedule," Biancardi said. "I'll tell you (how I feel about it) after the game." While the Lords don't seem to be playing well, the Raiders certainly are. Wright State has won two straight and four of its last five while going 3-0 in the Horizon League for the first time. "I think it's great," Biancardi said of being 3-0. "I want to be 4-0." That possibility will not happen until Thursday, when the Raiders are at Youngstown State. For now, the Raiders will have to display enough enthusiasm to play Kenyon. "We've got to face it like every other game," WSU sophomore forward Jordan Pleiman said. "You can't take it easy or a very bad game can occur for us. We don't want that at all. "We're feeling good right now. We dug ourselves out of a big hole at 0-4. That wasn't easy for us to do." Wright State is 6-6 following that 0-4 start and has done it with a variety of lineups, from three-guard configurations to two-guard formations and even some lineups with four big men and only one guard playing. All of it seemed to work against Chicago-Loyola on Saturday when the Raiders won 77-63. "This isn't Wright State at its best, but this is Wright State doing what we need to do," Pleiman said. "Wright State at its best, we'd be (scoring) in the 100s." Wright State hasn't scored 100 in a game since beating Greenville 107-55 in the 2000-2001 opener. Greenville is also Division III. RAIDER CONNECTION Things starting to fall into place for Raiders By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | There was good news in almost every column of the Wright State box score from Saturday night's 77-63 victory over Chicago-Loyola. The Raiders outshot the Ramblers from the field, the 3-point line and the foul line. They had more rebounds and fewer turnovers. Eight different players appeared for 12 or more minutes, and all contributed mightily. Scottie Wilson, who was supposed to take it easy for a couple of games coming off the flu, had his second straight excellent outing. Walter Chancellor, who looked lost in the two previous games, was a major contributor with eight points and three rebounds. "We finally put the defense together with the offense," junior forward Drew Burleson said. "We're playing the way we should be, and our record is starting to reflect that." Sure, the Raiders opened with a tough schedule, but still expected to do better than 0-4. Since that lousy start, the team is 6-2 and is in a familiar spot — .500. Both the teams from the previous two years ended .500. Staying there or getting ahead with be tough, however. Following tonight's game with Division III Kenyon, the Raiders are on the road for their next three games, all in the Horizon League. They're at Youngstown State Thursday followed by games at Wisconsin-Green Bay and Wisconsin-Milwaukee next week. Defending champion Milwaukee is supposed to be the team to beat again, and stands a game ahead of the Raiders at 4-0 in the league. The Raiders and Panthers are the only undefeated teams left in league play. "There are no breaks right now," junior guard DaShaun Wood said regarding the game with Kenyon. "We have to do what we have to do (to win). It's the way we want to play. It's still a long season. "At the beginning of the year, we didn't know who could do what." Slowly, the Raiders are finding out. Some players have been seeing more playing time, some less. After he started every game as a freshman last season, guard Everett Spencer didn't play a minute in the last two games or three of the last four. Since starting the first three games, guard Reinaldo Smith has played hardly at all. Meanwhile, hardly-used sub Wilson (12 minutes total in the first three games) emerged as a starter in game five and is a sub now only because he missed a week of practice and a game with the flu. Chancellor also is beginning to earn more playing time, while William Graham moved into the starting lineup for the first time. A year ago, only seven players averaged 10 or more minutes a game. This year, there are 10. "It's always nice to have a sub come in and play well," sophomore forward Jordan Pleiman said. It's always nice to have the starters play well, too, no matter who they are. www.daytondailynews.com/sports/content/sports/wsu/daily/0109raiderconnection.html?cxntnid=rc-010906

I am glad to see we played the whole bench and were able to rest our starters. Scott played the most minutes and he only played 23. Spencer also made an appearance tonight and had a nice game. His 11 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds might have earned him some playing time this year.

I am glad everyone played and no one got hurt, but I hate that we even scheduled Kenyon. We are D1. We should play an all D1 schedule. If you have to schedule a team like this, it should have been played at the start of the season to build some confidence in our players. I assume we had to schedule it this late in the year because we had to work around the NCAA hearing.
I was happy to see Spencer finally make an appearance. He has a ton of talent. I wish he could just pull it all together and play consistently.

UD played Arkansas Monticello, Florida A&M (196), Univ of Cincinnati (13), and Northern Iowa (9) as part of that Las Vegas tournament. I would gladly play one NAIA team to be able to play one team ranked in the top 200 and 2 other teams raned in the top 15.

They accepted an invite to the Las Vegas tournament and got stuck playing that NAIA team in an openning round before they played UC and Northern Iowa. WSU scheduled Kenyon on purpose. FYI, I've already pointed out in other threads that Gregory is slowly ruining UD's program.

I didn't make the game tonight. I was glad to see everyone play 9 or more minutes tonight. It rewards some of those guys for the work they put into practice. This game will leave everyone knowing they contributed and they now all feel part of the team.
I'm especially happy for Everret Spencer and Parysh Munroe. Hopefully this is a coming out game for Spencer and he can start to make more of a contribution to the team as we get into league play.

WSU ran out of time because of the late scheduling snafu.
