Even though we have dropped 3 games in a row, we are still in 2nd place in the league. The horizon league only has 3 teams with winning records right now.

January 25, 2006 (News Release/Men's Basketball) UIC Rallies Past Men The Wright State men's basketball team led by as much as 15 in the early stages of the second half, but UIC dominated the rest of the way as the Flames outscored the Raiders 27-7 the rest of the way to post a 62-57 Horizon League win at the Nutter Center Wednesday night. UIC broke out to an early 17-8 lead, but WSU responded with a 12-2 run, five by DaShaun Wood, to go ahead for the first time at 20-19. The Flames, though, regained the advantage and the two teams battled back and forth until the Raiders closed the period with a 11-2 burst to take a 37-28 halftime lead. Wright State then extended the margin to 50-35 with 13:45 remaining and was still up 54-42 after a Drew Burleson jumper at the 8:47 mark. That would be the final field goal of the night, though, for the Raiders as UIC tied the game with a 12-0 run and then after Burleson broke the string with a foul shot, the Flames added six more to go up 60-55 with under a minute left. The shooting percentage were nearly identical on the night as UIC was at 43 percent and Wright State 42 percent, but the Flames hit 19 of 31 from the stripe, including 13 of 23 in the second half, while the Raiders were just eight of 14 altogether, five of 10 after halftime. Turnovers also played a factor as the Flames forced 21 miscues, 15 in the second half, while committing only 14, resulting in a 27-12 difference in points off of turnovers, 19-9 the final 20 minutes. Burleson and Wood paced the Raiders with 12 points each while Jaron Taylor and Scottie Wilson each added nine. Danijel Zoric led all scorers with 15 for UIC (9-11, 2-6 Horizon) while Jovan Stefanov chipped in 14. Wright State, now 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the Horizon League, returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Hinkle Fieldhouse against the Butler Bulldogs. The two women's teams start the day at noon with the men's teams to follow. www.wsuraiders.com/cgi-bin/athletics/news.cgi?action=features&id=2582

Raiders collapse in loss to UIC WSU outscored 20-5 in final 8 minutes By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | The meltdown came sooner, lasted longer and inexplicably extended Wright State's losing streak to three games. Wednesday night at the Nutter Center, the Raiders let a 15-point second-half lead evaporate and in the final eight minutes were out-scored 20-5 as the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames burned the Raiders, 62-57, in a Horizon League game. While the Flames were scoring, WSU was throwing the ball away nine times on the way to 21 turnovers that led to 27 UIC points. "I expect good defense," said UIC coach Jimmy Collins. "I expected (the press) to cause some problems. We put (6-foot-9) Jovan Stefanov at the top of the press. Sometimes, you get desperate." The ploy worked, with normally standout WSU guard DaShaun Wood committing seven turnovers. He and fellow co-captain Drew Burleson left the locker room almost immediately after the game without stopping in the media room. It was the third straight game the Raiders held leads entering the final minutes without winning the game. "We're having a very difficult time finishing games," sophomore forward Jordan Pleiman said. "We just folded. We gave up. It wasn't the refs' fault. We lost our hearts, our composure, our focus. We didn't execute our offense or break the press." The loss dropped the Raiders to 8-9 on the season and 4-3 in the league. UIC is 9-11 and 2-6. Contact Marc Katz at 225-215 www.daytondailynews.com/sports/content/sports/wsu/daily/0126wsubb.html

There were at least two glaring coaching faux pas last nite:
1) We finished the game with two timeouts left.....What are we saving them for? Does Coach B. think he is Bobby Knight. For crying out loud, at least try to stop the momentum!!
2) As the UIC press began to unravel us, we insited on playing a "big" lineup. Jordan, Walt and Drew in the game. The situation cried out for William Graham and/or Everett Spencer.
I've been attending games since the mid 1980s, probably have seen more than 250 Raider games....never have I been so depressed, embarassed, chagrined, angry after a game. No way should we have lost that game.

Will Walt be eligible for the Butler game after he was ejected from the UIC game?

jfarrell,
I too was curious why we had 3 big men in the game when we were struggling to break the press.
Good point on the timeouts. I never realized that we ended the game with 2 in our pocket. Kinda strange?

I thought it was automatic you had to sit out the next game after you are ejected.

WSUGRAD, you only have to sit out the next game if you were given a flagrant foul for Fighting or attempting to fight. I do not think the refs ruled Walt was fighting, so he will probably be allowed to play against Butler. I think they just gave him to technicals, not for fighting, which automatically means you are ejected from the game. I do not know for sure what the referee's ruling was, but they rarely give the flagrant foul for fighting if punches were not thrown, but who knows with the refs we had against UIC they were pretty bad with a lot of their judgements.

Wright State might have been better served if Chancellor wasn't eligible today.

We'll have to wait and see. There is alot on the line for WSU; a 3 seed, first round bye, finishing the year with a winning record, and pride. If for no other reason, I hope someone steps up and shows the potential to be this team's leader for next season.
