Baseball Falls to #16 Tulane in Thirteenth Inning Holleran Posts Second Straight Quality Start Against Tulane March 3, 2007 Metairie, LA - For the second time in as many weeks, the Wright State baseball team dropped a game in the final at-bat. This time the Raiders lost to #16 Tulane 5-4 in thirteen innings at Zephyr Field. Ross Oeder started the game off with a double down the right field line. Dan Biedenharn then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, moving Oeder to third, to put runners on the corners with no outs. Tulane answered with a run of their own in the opening frame on an RBI single by Brad Emaus. The Green Wave took the lead in the fourth inning when Jared Dyer drew a two-out walk and scored on a double by Tim Guidry. Guidry was thrown out attempting to advance to third, but Tulane went ahead 2-1. The Raiders tied the game when Oeder struck with his second extra-base hit of the game, a triple down the left field line. Biedenharn then grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Oeder. Jeremy Hamilton followed that with a double and scored when Brian Shoup flew out to left field. Hamilton was tagging to move to third base when Scelfo, the Tulane left fielder, mistakenly thought it was the third out and allowed him to score from second. The Wave tied the game in the seventh when Emaus struck again. Emaus took a 1-0 pitch and sent it 390 feet over the right field fence to tie the game at 3-3. Holleran was relieved by Jason Bennion after retiring the first batter of the eighth inning. Holleran posted 7.1 innings of work, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Holleran struck out five and walked only one in the no decision. Bennion coaxed the next to batters to fly out and the game headed to the ninth tied at three. In the Raiders half of the ninth, Aaron Field singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from pinch hitter Stephen Marquez. The Raiders, however, couldn't push the run across the plate, leaving the door open for Tulane. In the tenth, Oeder laced another lead-off double into the left field corner and motored into second. A one-out ground out by Hamilton moved him to third and a Shoup single allowed him to cross the plate, giving WSU a 4-3 advantage. Seth Henry led off the Tulane tenth with a hit by pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to knot the game at 4-4 in the first extra frame. Nate Stevens threw three scoreless innings, allowed only the one earned run and struck out five batters. Jon Durket made his first appearance as a Raider, facing one batter in the game. In the thirteenth inning, the Green Wave pushed the winning run across the plate with a one-out single that landed just fair down the left field line. Erich Schanz took the loss for the Raiders, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing only one earned run. Schanz walked three and allowed two hits, falling to 0-2 on the season. The Raiders fall to 2-2 overall in 2007 and look to avenge the loss to Tulane tomorrow. WSU will square off with the Green Wave at 4:00 Dayton time tomorrow at Zephyr Field. wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/030307aaa.html

From Wright State to the majors in 9 monthsPitcher Joe Smith makes the Mets roster thanks to a great spring training. By Marc Katz Staff Writer Friday, March 30, 2007 A year ago at this time, Joe Smith was still pitching for the Wright State Raiders on their way to the Horizon League tournament championship in late May and an early June NCAA tournament berth in Corvallis, Ore. Sunday night, Smith may be pitching for the New York Mets against Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals. "It hasn't set in yet," Smith said Thursday after being told he made the Mets roster. "Maybe it will when I get to St. Louis. I'm packing tonight." Smith, a third-round, amateur draft pick by the Mets in 2006, started his pro career just after the NCAAs with Brooklyn of the Class A New York-Penn League (0-1, 0.45 ERA), then moved to Binghamton of the Class AA Eastern League (0-2, 5.68). Invited to the major-league camp this spring, Smith, a sidearm reliever, pitched 13 1/3 innings, struck out 15, walked only three and posted a 1.35 ERA. Mets manager Willie Randolph called Smith into his office and told him the good news. "It's a little different," Smith said of playing in college and playing for the Mets. "I just knew they were bringing me into camp and giving me an opportunity to pitch." At Wright State last spring, Smith was 3-0 with 13 saves and an 0.75 ERA in the regular season. He will become the third WSU player to appear in the major leagues, following outfielder Keith Gordon (Reds, 1993) and pitcher Brian Anderson (Angels, Indians, Diamondbacks and Royals since 1993). www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2007/03/30/ddn033007joesmith.html
