FAIRBORN — Green and yellow streamers hung from tree limbs Wednesday on the Wright State University campus, celebrating the men's basketball team's first conference championship and NCAA tournament berth since 1993.
The Raiders defeated Butler University 60-55 Tuesday night at the Nutter Center in the Horizon League tournament championship game.
"It's wonderful that those boys have played so hard and done so well," said Ann Peters, a 1975 Wright State graduate and Raiders basketball season ticket-holder since 1982.
Peters of New Carlisle was purchasing Raiders "Get Rowdy!" T-shirts for family members at the Wright State Bookstore. The store had sold 1,500 of the shirts before Tuesday's game, said manager Jennifer Gebhart.
"People from all over the country are calling in today trying to get merchandise, too," Gebhart said.
Most fans requested Wright State Horizon League Champions and NCAA First Round T-shirts. Both designs will be available starting today at the WSU bookstore in the Student Union and at the College Store, 2812 Colonel Glenn Highway. The shirts also can be ordered online at wright.bkstore.com.
"It's been crazy," said J.R. Hirschfeld, co-founder and CEO of TL Sportswear in Leesburg, Fla. The licensed collegiate apparel company on Wednesday printed 800 shirts. The shirts will continue to be printed to meet demand.
TL Sportswear donated an additional 24 shirts to the Raiders to wear Sunday during the announcement of their tournament opponent and site, said Hirschfeld, a Lima native.
Wright State junior Melissa Vuckovich of Englewood hopes to attend the Raiders' first-round game. "If we can get tickets, then we'll probably take a road trip and go and see it," she said.
What's next for the Wright State Raiders?
The NCAA will announce its tournament pairings at 6 p.m. Sunday on CBS. The Raiders will play at one of eight first-round sites. WSU could play as close as Columbus or Lexington, Ky., or as far away as Spokane, Wash., or Sacramento, Calif. Find out who they play Sunday night at DaytonDailyNews.com
If you're thinking about buying tickets, get ready to look online. According to WSU Assistant Athletic Director Bob Grant, the school will receive about 350 tickets, which likely will be reserved for players, coaches, cheerleaders and boosters.
