Two Wrights don't make a wrong.
Sounds cheesy, doesn't it?
After Wright State defeated Butler on Tuesday to seal the Horizon League Championship and earn their second NCAA Tournament berth ever, you can imagine what some of the headlines looked like:
"Wright On"
"On The Wright Track"
"Heading In The Wright Direction"
Headlines aside, Wright State was and its fan base was thrilled with their historical win.
When the clock hit zeroes, the fans rushed the court in celebration and prepared for head coach Brad Brownwell to cut down the nets, as if Wright State had made a Final Four appearance.
For the Raiders players, it was basically meant the same thing.
Brownwell, in his first season with Wright State, shocked his locker room when he was first hired. He stood in front of them and candidly said that they would make the NCAA Tournament.
That’s like Paris Hilton standing up in front of her family saying: “I want to become a nuclear physicist.”
Nobody would believe her and nobody would take her seriously.
Just like the Raiders with their coach.
Wright State hadn’t been to the tournament since 1993 and they hadn’t enjoyed a winning season in ten years.
Getting his Raiders to believe was a task tougher than what Emilio Estevez had to go through when he took over The Mighty Ducks in the 1992 Disney Movie.
The Raiders even started 3-5, which conjured some of the ghosts of the past.
But Brownwell exorcised them, and he remained certain about his assertion. After they clinched their berth in the NCAA Tournament, several players talked about how his sureness never wavered and how his confidence seeped into his team.
After an abysmal 13-15 season last year, Wright State set new school records for wins overall (23) and league victories (13) since they entered the Horizon League in 1987.
While everyone connected to Wright State’s program is in shock therapy, the truth is that their coach has a track record of success and they should have seen this coming – at least a little bit.
Brownwell is leading a team to the tourney for the third time in six seasons. The other team he led was UNC-Wilmington in 2003 and 2006. He’s also a two-time Colonial Coach of the Year.
But even he recognizes the magnitude of this win. He’s going to let his players soak it all up for about 48 hours before they shift their focus to the 64-team bracket.
Senior DaShaun Wood has really blossomed under Brownwell’s tutelage. Wood, the Horizon League Tournament MVP, had 52 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and three steals in two tournament games. He has led the Raiders all season long, averaging 19.8 points per game and became the 10th player in school history to amass 1000 points and 500 rebounds.
Wright State may not make a dent in the NCAA Tournament, but Brownwell has helped the Raiders take their first baby step. And that’s how you get to going places.
Online sports betting enthusiasts will do well to note that Wright State is 14-3-1 ATS in their last 18 games. All three against the spread losses were also straight up road losses
