I've been thinking about this ever since last season. When are we finally going to get some good media coverage? We have sub-standard coverage on the radio, t.v., newspaper, and even on the internet. We all want WSU to grow into another great mid-major program, but I don't see how we are going to develop a great fan base with the coverage we get.
TV: we get next to no t.v. time on the local news and we only play on t.v. once or twice a year if we are lucky.
Newspaper: Tom Archdeacon has written some very nice pieces on Wright State this past year, but his stories are very infrequent. Katz is not a horrible journalist, but I don't think he really cares about WSU and you can see it in his writing.
Radio: I like Chris Collins, but I am sick of the revolving door of announcers we have had the last few years to go along with him. Half the guys we have used know less about the team than an average fan. It drives me nuts to listen to someone like Grote. He wasn't able to distinguish Drew from Jordan last season. We only played 8 guys any given night last year. It really shouldn't be that hard to tell 8 guys apart and remember their names should it?
Internet: The average person looking for information on WSU basketball on-line is going to come into contact with Raiderroundball. It is sad that someone like Rod Hissong writes for Raiderroundball. It's bad enough that he is a poor journalist and gets most of what he writes from WSU press releases. He lives on the east coast and doesn't even get to watch the games in person. Who wants to read an article from someone that listened to the game on the radio or watched in on-line.

I agree with most of what you are saying. To a large extent, I think our own coaches are to blame for some of it too. We would have a much better chance of getting on t.v. if we played some more name schools. We had the whole last week off that we could have played a money game against a BCS school and gotten some t.v. exposure. Instead we are playing Presbyterian in the middle of our conference schedule just so we could have another home game.

I think that our tv and newspaper coverage has greatly improved over the past year and a half since Brownell was hired. I only see that getting better as we improve upon our early success under Brownell. This is something that needs to be addressed by WSU. We need to get a permanent announcer. I hate the rotating announcer system. Some of them have been horrible, but even the decent ones have a hard time calling a game with Collins due to their lack of experience with one another. Internet: The average person looking for information on WSU basketball on-line is going to come into contact with Raiderroundball. It is sad that someone like Rod Hissong writes for Raiderroundball. Rod is a worthless hack of a journalist, but Ryan Hehr has potential.

Rod, is a radio guy, and should stick to radio. What raiderroundball needs is to get Cigarboy back writing articles for them. He does a good job of writing about WSU on Collegehoopsnet.
I agree the media will get better the better we continue to get. WSU has to prove it will be a consistent winner. It probably hasn't helped that we only played 1 game after 2-3 weeks into the season. ESPNU has already picked up our game at Butler this year, and we have several other opportunities for national games.
The local stations around here do not have a lot of money to pick up WSU games. Other than Channel 7, the other local stations do not invest much into their news sports coverage, and until we sell out regularly, WSU wants the people in the stands and will not except a low price to air the games. That means the local channels would have to line up a good amount of sponsorship before they could bid on the games.

That isn't going to happen. Rowdy has a tendency to push away the biggest supporters to his website when their opinions differ from his own, i.e. PapaRaider & Cigarboy. Rod is a horrible writer, but he toes the RRB company line. Rowdy won't replace him. Hey, at least he doesn't let Bubba write articles.

raiderhuld, two points. first, according to the paper, we were negotiating with a better opponent and it fell thru at the last minute. that is why we ended up with presbyrterian. second, i would never, ever play another "money" game, ever!! i asked mike decourcy at the raider/horizon league luncheon what the keys were to the mvc moving itself up to among the bcs conferences. first thing he mentioned was the teams not doing the "money" games, going to a bcs school, playing them only at their place for dough. if they do not want to do a 1/1 then to heck with them. there are so mamy good mid majors, we can get quality opponents without playing bcs schools. i would take another series with southern illiniois in a heartbeat, along with about any other mvc team. george mason and others would be great opponents. but no more "money" games. our schedule will continue to improve as our program's name becomes more favorably viewed out there. GO RAIDERS!

We should have participated in an exempt tournament.

Hey, at least he doesn't let Bubba write articles. Bubba's too busy fabricating his latest conspiracy theory about the local media to write for Rowdy.

Rebel Raider, Brownell said he tried to get into one, but the only ones available conflicted with WSU finals and he didn't want to do that to his players.

Rebel Raider, Brownell said he tried to get into one, but the only ones available conflicted with WSU finals and he didn't want to do that to his players. Does that mean we will never play in a preseason tournament again because our finals are the same time every year and so are these tournaments?

I seriously doubt it. This year just didn't workout, and considering all the new players in their first full quarter at WSU it was probably a safe move by the staff. Next year we should only have at most 2 new players in WSU for the first time, and only 1 true freshman, so missing exams might not be as important, but who knows.
There are plenty of tourney's out there, once our name recognition gets a little better maybe we get some preferential treatment to get into the ones we want to play in and not just take anything that might be available.

BB said on his radio show that we were suppose to be in an exempt tournament this year down at UAB but it fell through. This tells me that exempt tournaments are something they will try and do. I have a feeling that next year we'll be in a pretty nice exempt tournament.

I couldn't find a relevant and recent thread to put this in so this place will suffice. American Sports Network is shutting down. Personally I saw them as a network that could potentially air some of our games nationally after the poor deal we got from ESPN this year. Oh well

Personally I saw them as a network that could potentially air some of our games nationally after the poor deal we got from ESPN this year. Oh well That's too bad. The execution and on-air talent--particularly in the studio--was lacking, but that was easily correctible. I can't remember any WSU games being telecast by ASN, but I know the team down the road had at least 2 games broadcast on ASN. Yet, I couldn't watch them due to AT&T universe not including sub channels. Direct TV (AT&T) doesn't include sub-channels either. That was a big hurdle for ASN. The other hurdle...stations only carried a game when their local team was playing. There's potential...LOTS of potential, especially with the implosion going on with ESPN, but if ASN is to come back they need to refine their model, have better studio talent and execution, and require local stations to carry more programing.
