I say the below post on Loyola's message board and thought I'd bring it over here for discussion.....................
I think I've got to give the nod to Brad Brownell.
It's always hard to rate coaches because of what they do with widely varying levels of talent. But for Brownell to come in, win the league in his first year with other people's talent, and then to knock off Butler after losing his leading scorer and point guard... Wow.
It seems like Jimmy Collins has been roused from a somnambulent state, too, by whatever it was that happened last year.
Brad Stevens is too new, and benefited too much by a system and experienced players to know what ability he has.
Whitesell is good, but I wonder about the turnover among his assistant coaches that helped give him so much success in hist first three years. Pat Baldwin is the only guy left with D-1 experience, D-1 recruiting experience, and the ability to put together a game plan.
I'm going to call Rob Jeter a bust. UWM has fallen so far from Bo Ryan and Bruce Pearl, especially given where they were. The loss of Smith and Johnson doesn't bode well. I saw someone on the UWM board bring up Ric Cobb. Ouch.
Gary Waters at Cleveland State might be the real deal. You don't beat a Big East team and an ACC team on the road in your second year, and gather a roster of kids from six states and two countries at a mid-major if you don't have something on the ball.
Perry Watson needs another gig. He doesn't seem to be very interested anymore. That whole "winning big games" and "sending players to the NBA" thing didn't raise their attendance or profile one bit.
Tod Kowalczyk at Green Bay seems to have more impatience and temper than I do. I would not be a good head coach. Maybe a decent assistant. Tod was good at that.
Jerry Slocum at Youngstown State has improved their team, but not by much. It's hard to live in the shadow of a football team.
Homer Drew has been invigorated by having Bryce as his assistant and joining the HL. Their only loss this year was against an undefeated SEC team on the road. And they're 2-0 in their new league.
