I knew we were a decent three point shooting team but after seventeen games I was surprised to see that we had three players making 45% or higher and a fourth player making 38% of his three's.
Scottie Wilson is making forty-eight percent on 12 for 25
Todd Brown is making forty-six percent on 38 for 82
Vaughn Duggins is making forty-five percent on 35 for 78
Troy Tabler is making thirty-eight percent on 18 for 48
When was the last time we had this many proficient three point shooters? I also like that all of these players are not one dimensional perimeter shooters. They all can shot the mid range jumper or penetrate to the hole. In fact all of them take more shots inside the arc then they do from the perimeter. With the quality of perimeter shooters on this team you would think that it would open the paint up for Jordan and create even more opportunities for him in the post.
Now if both Cooper Land and Ronnie Thomas can give us a little bit of perimeter scoring it will only make us that much better and harder to defend.

Ronnie Thomas is 50% from three point range and I don't think that is a fluke. He was 33% as a freshman at Duquense. JDG was also shooting 39% from three point range before he was injured.
Next year we can add Scott Grote to that mix. He connected on 34-107 three pointers as a freshman last year for 32%. I'd be surprised if Grote and Cooper Land don't shoot around 40% from 3 point range next year.

And the great thing about our 3-pt shooters is their size. Thomas, Land, and Grote (and Brown for that matter) are all big players who will be able to shoot over a lot of defenders on the perimeter or be guarded by bigs who don't want to come all the way out to the three point line. If 4's and sometimes 5's are forced to defend the perimeter that opens lanes to penetrate to the hoop. Hopefully Grote and Land (with added development) can take the ball to the basket off the dribble at times.
Now, throw our ever-improving guards into the mix and we should see a more potent offensive squad.

The only reason I did not include him is that he has only taken four shots all year from behind the arc and has made two of them. I will tell you what, if Ronnie is 100% healthy and can give us ten or minutes a game and be able to knock down a three per game that would really make us a better team. Now you add in the factor that a healthy John David can shoot the three at a nice percentage and now we are talking about some serious depth coming off our bench for the stretch run.

Having big men that can shoot from the three's can be an advantage because it draws the other teams rebounders away from the basket plus it will create driving lanes for our guards.

BigD got me thinking about next yr and who might step up. With JAP & SW graduating it leaves 2 spots open. BigD was "projecting" the possibility of Cooper becoming a 40% shooter from the perimeter.
Cooper presently is listed at 6-8 and 215 lbs. I really doubt he weighs that much but for arguments sake let's say CL is around 208 lbs give or take 5 lbs. I don't personally see CL ever being over 220 lbs and that is OK if he just gets stronger. Their are 2 players in the HL that remind me of Cooper and the potential he has as a player. Both of them are terrific 3 pt shooters and big men who play on the perimeter.
1. Page Paulson from UWM. Paulson is a 6-7 Sr. and 220 lbs. He avg. 14.9 ppg and is hitting 47% of his 3's ( 49-104).
2. Mike Schachtner from UW-GB. Schachtner is a 6-9 Jr. and 215 lbs. He avg. 18.2 ppg and is shooting 50% from the 3's (25-52)
Notice that both of them weigh less then 220 lbs but they are upper classmen and have the strength to rebound in the HL so Cooper doesn't necessarily have to put on a bunch of weigh but rather he just needs to hit the weight room and get stronger.
I think the sky is the limit for Cooper and if he is willing to put the time and effort in the weight room & gym then he can be a terrific player for us in the HL.

I really hope the Loyola game is going to get Coop going offensively. You can tell he has a pure stroke. For a pure shooter like that, that's all you need to set you off. He's 6'8 too, and I don't think he's done growing yet.
